About

L'Afrique de l'Est specializes in authentic Ethiopian and African cuisine featuring a wide array of vegetarian and meat-based dishes served on traditional sourdough injera flatbread. Guests experience communal dining where the porous bread serves as both a plate and an edible utensil for scooping stews like doro wat or spicy lentils. The menu prioritizes complex spice blends such as berbere and mitmita to create deeply aromatic profiles unique to the Horn of Africa. Vibrant vegetable platters showcase seasoned legumes, sautéed greens, and root vegetables prepared with traditional techniques. The interior reflects cultural motifs that accompany the sensory focus on bold, earthy flavors. This establishment provides a direct culinary connection to regional food traditions through staple ingredients and heritage recipes that characterize East African cooking methods.

The food was tasty, service mediocre at best, presentation was poor, communication was bad, & environment/experience quite dilapidated. All things considered, very expensive for what you get, even the lamb that I got. The main lady seems nice enough. The guy serving had too much apathy. I definitely wouldn't go out of my way to come here, but there is something positive to be said about their authentic dishes.

Small Family run business with amazing fresh home made like food. We tried #5 & #8. Both we are absolutely delicious . You might have to wait a lottle for the fresh food, but it is worth the wait.

I don't normally leave bad reviews as I choose to just move on with my life but I'm writing this review because I had such high expectations after reading all the positive reviews for this restaurant & unfortunately we didn't have the same experience as others.

Myself & 3 other people went for dinner on a Saturday night & to start off, it was closed when we got there & we had to wait in the cold for an additional 45 minutes after their advertised opening time, for them to actually open the restaurant.

We ordered 4 different curries to share. We expected them to be decent sized but they were very small & fit all on one plate. The service & atmosphere were awful. The server took 30 minutes to take our order, another 30 minutes to bring us water & we waited 2 hours for our food. We were the only people in the restaurant. The restaurant itself was very run down & there was no vibe or music playing, making it a very awkward & depressing atmosphere.

After waiting two hours for food, being presented with one plate of four very small curries & some crepes was very disappointing. The food itself was fine but there was nothing to it, it was lentils & rice so there was no reason for it to be so expensive. In total it was around $150 for one plate of food & no drinks which is insane.

Overall, it was a pretty negative experience & to have it topped off by being $150 confirmed that we wouldn't be returning.

I can not possibly recommend a restaurant more than I recommend the East Africa restaurant.

There was a void when Messop D'or closed (years ago) & this place filled it.

I have been a long time fan. The food, the couple running the place, the aromas, & the energy are all amazing!

Make sure you have a lot of time & some folks for good conversation & you will have an unforgettable experience.

I wish I had pictures but the moment that plate is placed in the middle of the table, someone has already torn the ingera & is digging in.

Just writing this review has made me want to return. I think I have some plans for the weekend 😉I will try to take some pictures. Yedoro Watt 🤤here I come…

I suggest a reservation

Food is always amazing. Family owned spot, local business. Absolutely recommend to anyone. If you're two people, I'd recommend 1 meat dish & 2 veggies. It comes with enough injera to be full. Cold in the winter, bring warm sweater just in case. Also BYOB. In the photo we ordered #4-#16-#18, but everything on the menu is delicious, no wrong picks.

I attended a party where this restaurant catered the food. I don't remember the specific dishes we had, but it didn't even matter because every single bite was delicious! I had never had Ethiopian food before, but I will definitely be having it again. I'm so glad I got to try something new from an authentic, locally owned spot!
