Review Summary

Reviews describe La Cave à Manger as a cozy basement boulangerie in Old Montreal with old world charm and a welcoming vibe, where pastries are the star and pistachio croissants, pistachio rolls, croissant eclairs, and ham and cheese croissants are repeatedly praised alongside bagels, pain au chocolat, and other flaky treats, while coffee and hot chocolate are well liked. The setting is small and seating is limited, yet the atmosphere and friendly staff create a memorable experience, and the location near the Bonsecours Market adds to the appeal. A few notes mention the prices as high and occasional inconsistency with some items, but many call the quality exceptional and say visits feel like discovering a hidden gem. Overall La Cave à Manger stands out for its pastries, especially the pistachio pastries and croissants, with many visitors planning return trips to try more of the menu.

This café is truly a fantastic spot! Their variety of croissants are all delicious-crispy & perfectly baked, with the chocolate ones being just the right amount of sweet. While enjoying your food outdoors, you can also see some adorable little birds playing nearby. It's especially recommended for parents with children; the interaction between kids & the birds creates a warm & joyful atmosphere.

The BEST croissant I have ever had!!! So crispy, so puffy, & the sweetness is just the right amount. I really enjoyed the crunching sound of the first bite. Also, there are some birdie friends wanting to share the croissant with you, who doesn't want to have some pain au chocolat anyway?

I need to give my praise to a worker named Julius that served my friend & I at this place!! He was so kind & helpful. To top it off I'm surprised by how fresh the croissants are considering I went right before closing. If you're craving a croissant late at night I highly recommend coming here.

*edit: I have never met a more generous & kind staff in my life as the two boys that were on August 4th at the night shift, literally they deserve raises, & I have never regretted not leaving a higher tip. Literally I was about to come back like five times but I thought it would be weird 🤣God bless their hearts. Truly amazing people! *Tasty tasty tasty! I came here for the crème brûlée roll (it turned out that they change flavors daily , so I wasn't in luck) but my pistachio- orange roll was honestly heaven. One of the best boulangeries ici!

Very disappointed... we go there every time we visit Montreal from Ottawa. Order the same stuff over & over again. This time we got inconsistent sizes red velvet croissants, it's wayyy smaller than before. & the almond croissants are all crumbs due to poor packaging.

J'ai pris un New-York roll à la pistache. La pâte à croissant est très bonne, mais il y avait trop de crème de pistache. C'était beaucoup trop à mon goût. J'ai laissé la moitié de la crème dans l'assiette.

The best croissant in Montreal. The "feuilletage" of the puff pastry is incredible, flaky & soft as I like. You can also try the ham & cheese croissant, almond croissant & the famous roll. Everything is amazing, made with quality ingredients. The shop is super duper cute too, located in a beautiful old building "Marché Bonsecours". You can stay on the terrace & enjoy the old port vibe. I couldn't recommend it more !

Le meilleur New York Roll à Montréal !

Tried the pistachio roll (croissant) here. First - it is pricey, at $12+ for one roll. The good about the roll is the pastry itself was really good & perfectly baked & held up well with lot of filling inside. However, the pistachio filling was too sweet, & was way too green which meant it contained artificial flavors/coloring & that is also reflected in the taste. I've had quite a few pistachio croissants & none of them have had filling so green. Based on that, I would probably recommend having a plain butter croissant but none of the filled or fancy ones. Should have looked at other reviews since many have called out this same thing.

Unbelievable out of this world croissants & bakery items!! Totally authentic, best I've had since Paris!! No frills, not a tourist trap. Staff were friendly & engaging. Definitely worth the trip!! A hidden gem right outside the tourist area, glad I found it!!
