Absolutely incredible dining experience! Every dish we tried was bursting with flavor & expertly prepared. The karaage was a standout - perfectly crispy on the outside, tender & juicy inside, & full of rich, savory flavor.
The rainbow rolls were far from your average sushi rolls. These were exceptionally fresh & artfully crafted - a clear step above what you'd find in grocery stores or even many other Japanese restaurants.
I was especially surprised by the seaweed rolls with egg. At first glance, they might not be the most photogenic dish, but wow - they were unbelievably delicious. A perfect example of'don't judge a book by its cover.'
We ended the meal with mochi for dessert, which had the perfect balance of chewiness & sweetness - a light & satisfying finish.
Despite the place being crowded & busy, the servers were fairly attentive. They kindly opened our bottle of wine & offered a taste before pouring, which was a nice touch & showed great hospitality.
The atmosphere was lively & had a good vibe overall, though it did get quite loud due to the number of people - something to keep in mind if you're looking for a quiet dinner.
Highly recommend this spot to anyone looking for creative, high-quality Japanese cuisine.

Food is overpriced. It's not authentic Japanese cuisine. I hope they are just trying to be inventive. The chicken katsu was dry & over fried. Rice cost extra, which I find the opposite of Japanese curry convention. The washroom was filthy & unattended. The paper towel dispenser was empty & I had to dry my hands with my shirt. I had the pleasure of dining at Kyo Bar Japonais last night, & I must say, it was an unforgettable experience! From the moment we walked in, the warm & inviting atmosphere set the tone for a fantastic evening. The decor was sleek & modern, with a beautiful bar area where we enjoyed watching the skilled chefs prepare our meals. The service was top-notch, with friendly & attentive staff who were happy to answer all our questions about the menu & make recommendations. & speaking of the menu, the selection of sushi & Japanese dishes was impressive, with something for every taste & preference. What really impressed us, however, was the quality & presentation of the dishes. Each plate was carefully crafted to be both visually appealing & delicious, with garnishes & sauces added with flair. It's clear that the chefs at Kyo Bar Japonais are passionate about their craft & take pride in every dish that leaves the kitchen. Dined alone on Christmas Eve & tried the $95 Christmas menu. While I was expecting traditional Japanese cuisine, the dishes turned out to be a delightful fusion of Japanese & French styles. Surprisingly, the flavors were excellent-refreshing & well-balanced. Since I had to drive, I didn't order any alcohol. Food was delicious overall. My family is Japanese & some of the items were modified to fit the local palate. Example, Karaage was not battered & fried & yakitori was sized triple the typical izakaya yakitori…typical Japanese food made by non Japanese & for different customer base. Otherwise, it was fine. Our expectation was much different that's all. I guess the izakaya thing threw us off expecting something we'd find in Japan. lol.View more

Some friends of mine gave me a gift card for this beautiful place, very fancy & in an amazing position in old port (2 min by walk from place d'armes station). Great expectations, unluckily very disappointed. The service was warm & comforting, I asked some special things & they had no problem to change for me. Thank you! 😊 In my opinion the food is too pricy for the quality. I ate better in some sushi all you can eat. I expected higher quality ingredients (like fresh fish, that instead didn't taste of anything). Too many ingredients that always in my opinion didn't match very well. I prefer the original simple Japanese sushi, only rice & fresh fish. It's anyway a nice experience to do once.View more

Got miso soup, vegetarian gyoza, & the 30pcs chef's choice. Everything was great, particularly the soup & maki rolls. Also tried some Japanese whiskey which was top notch. Their list of whiskeys & saki is quite extensive. Our server was excellent as well. I'll be returning next time I am in town.View more

I'm in love with this little Japanese gem. I had the salmon poke bowl & I was thrilled with the amount of fresh veg, fruit, & salmon it included. The server was knowledgeable about gluten free options & I am confident it was prepared safely. Service was prompt, friendly & professional. The ambience is quaint, unique, & modern. I am really happy to have found a place that serves an amazing selection of Japanese liquor that can't be found in any other restaurants. The thing I dislike the most though about this place is the portions that are served for the prices. Each plates are around 20$ & the portions are just way too small. For example, the skewers were around 18$ for two skewers & the karrage only had 5 pieces for 20$. Even though the food was good, I just feel like the price is too expensive for the food. Moving on to the good parts, the food was tasty. Each dish had great flavours & their dipping sauces were all unique & complementing the food amazingly. The quality of the ingredients was also great which made the food just that much more enjoyable. As for the servive, it depends on the people working there. Our waiter was smiling, polite & respectful through the night & he was really accomodating however, throughout our meal, we also had a lot of other waiters running around & just bumping us in our backs without saying anything. The service was also pretty slow, it took close to 20 minutes before our orders were taken & 30 minutes before our first plate arrived.View more

I stopped by for lunch on a Tuesday right after arriving in Montreal. The Nigiri & Sashimi combination was FANTASTIC. Nolan my server was incredible & even let me practice my broken French with a terrible American accent as he gave me recommendations. So glad I stopped in & may be back before my visit is complete. Highly recommend. It competes with some of my favorite Japanese Sushi spots from Chicago & San Francisco.View more

My partner & I were curious about this place for the past few years so we decided to stop by a few days ago when my mom was in town to try it. Very disappointing, food wise & service wise. First of all, all the food items seemed to be loosely based on Japanese food, but just jam packed with fancy ingredients, leaving no trace of Japanese taste. We ordered a kimchi cream udon, sushi & shrimp tempura. The sushi wasn't much to write home about, which was what we were craving. Just your usual tempura-stuffed rainbow rolls with just caviar or something on the top. The shrimp tempura came out lukewarm & soggy, even looked microwaved & took forever for it to come out. The udon was way too heavy, just bombarded with a bunch of thawed seafood & shimeji mushrooms, & I didn't quite understand the kimchi concept. Food left us all confused. Second, a customer next to us dropped a glass. Could happen, I worked in a restaurant a while ago so I'm familiar with it. But some of the glass seemed like it flew onto my mom's shoe or sock & she kneeled down to check. The manager came to address the customer next to us & laughed, but as he passed my mom, he just looked at her in a strange way instead of asking if everything was alright. Didn't sit well with me. However, our server was generally alright & was informative & nice. Overall, if you're looking for fusion food specifically, this may be the place for you. But in my opinion, this meal was not worth $102.33 & I'm embarrassed to have shown my mom this restaurant. We won't be coming back, not a great place for Asian food at all. You can get sushi for much less & bigger portions than what this place charges.View more

What a gorgeous food experience & date night. The restaurant is absolutely beautiful with the old stone walls, understated elegant Japanese decor & warm lighting. The service was impeccable. The food was to die for. I completely forgot to take a picture of the main meal which was the chef's choice of 30 pieces of Maki. But it was just as beautifully presented as the rest of the food & the restaurant, but also was super delicious! The tuna tataki was to die for. Good prices. 100% recommend Kyo Bar Japonais!View more
