Not my first time eating at Katsuya. They are the go-to restaurant when I crave for Tonkatsu.
Big portion, definitely worth your pennies. You can get refill for rice & eat with any remaining sauce on the plate. Great options for sauce.
I like spicy food & their rose sauce is amazing. My boyfriend likes the Mayo Teriyaki, it matches the meaty tonkatsu so well.
This is a great spot to visit whenever I'm craving Japanese-style pork cutlets. The outside is perfectly crispy, the meat is thick & juicy, & every bite is really satisfying. They also offer options like cheese katsu & Korean-style pork cutlets with sauce on top, so it's fun to choose based on what you're in the mood for. If you order the Japanese-style katsu, you can even grind your own sesame seeds & mix them into the sauce-just like in Japan. & paired with an Asahi Super Dry, which you can't skip when it comes to Japanese food… isn't that pretty much heaven? ^^
The Pork Katsu & tempura with tartare sauce were incredible, really delicious & filling. The staffs were really attentive & thoughtful to what I asked & for that I commend them, hats off! Highly recommended restaurant. Good service & great food. Will absolutely order again/go to the restaurant in person. ❤?❤?❤?❤?❤?
Good spot in downtown for a Japanese-Korean meal.
Came here on a Monday for a quick lunch. Even during the busy hour, the place was pretty empty, so food came out fast. The setup reminded me of the Katsuya-style restaurants that are big in South Korea. Tons of tonkatsu variations with Korean street-food like toppokki. This location felt a notch below what you'd get in Seoul, but still better than most spots in North America.
From the Korean side of the menu, I got the mala cream toppokki. Never tried it during its hype era, & it was actually better than I expected. Thin cylindrical rice cakes (which I usually prefer) & a mala cream sauce with enough heat without that heavy carbonara vibe.
The chicken karaage was decent. I went with thigh meat, but they didn't drain the oil properly, so it leaned a bit greasy. For tonkatsu, I'd been craving a proper cheese katsu, so I ordered Gold & Silver (half mozzarella, half cheddar). The cheddar half was too sharp & salty, while the mozzarella side was solid, though the pork crust ran a tad dry.
Still a good option if you want casual Korean & Japanese comfort food downtown at a reasonable price.
Really good portion. Got two stories of katsu, salad, rice & soup. Bottle of Acqua di Gio after shave balm for size reference
Food was decent but overall experience at katsuya was pretty bad. The food was rally good, packed with flavour but loaded with oil. I understand everything was deep fried but the taste of the oil was very apparent. The food looks better than it tastes. We took the pork filled with cheese, which was ok. & we also tried a garlic spicy chicken which was better. Good amount of chicken in the dish which was good to see. The service however was horrible. The waiter was very hard to talk to. He dropped water on our table & did not apologize. He did not come back to clean it even. We asked for napkins to clean it ourselves, they never came as well. Overall the food was decent but the service was so bad that I would not go there again.
The service was extremely slow. Understaffed. Be willing to wait up to 1 hr before your order is taken. Don't get me wrong though, servers are very nice & do a good job but they need more employees beginning earlier in the day.
J'ai adoré mon expérience.Tout est si délicieux & les portions sont généreuses à souhait.Je recommande :)
The pork Katsu with curry was delicious. Also, the serving of pork is generous, & the meat is so tender. I wish they'd serve it with something other than raw cabbage, but that seems to be the standard way it's served at any katsudon place. They should serve it with tempura vegetables. That being said, as far as shredded, raw cabbage salads go, it was okay - they seasoned it with a light dressing which tasted good, but I'd take a coleslaw over it any day. My other gripe is that they don't provide enough curry (sauce) to go with the meat & rice. Curry is not expensive, so there should be a good amount of it to go with the other elements on the plate - otherwise you're kind of serving an incomplete dish. Thankfully the pork itself was so good, I could look past the shortcomings. Our waitress was attentive & very friendly.
Great food, exactly was expected. I've never been to Japan but the Curry Katsu sauce was better than I imagined. The Takoyakis as an entry are a MUST. Crispy & beautiful presentation. Totally would go back
Hands down the best curry pork katsu. Hard to access from suburbs but I go there malgré tout.
I love the chicken with 3 sauces. Tried lovely rose tokbokki & it was BOOM! Combine 2 together made my day 🥰🙀
Katsuya offers a pleasant dining experience with friendly service & generous meal portions. The atmosphere is comfortable, & it's easy to enjoy a meal here without feeling rushed.
The Chicken Katsu with Curry Sauce was very flaky & light, with a satisfying crunch & a big portion. The curry sauce was typical Japanese-style curry. It is solid, though nothing extraordinary.
The Pork & Cheese Katsu with Rosée Sauce was crispy & light as well. The rosée sauce had a salty kick, & the combination with pork & cheese was unique & interesting. Definitely worth trying if you like creative twists.
The salad came with a smoky, light dressing that was surprisingly good. The takoyaki was crunchy, which is different from the usual soft, mushy style. The sweet sauce combined with the crunch felt a bit overwhelming after a while, but it's an interesting variation.
Overall, the katsu is excellent & the generous portions make it a satisfying meal. Highly recommend giving Katsuya a try for delicious katsu with some creative twists.
Really good food especially the cheese balls but long wait time.
