I've been here several times because the food is consistently good. The portions are quite generous, the sauces are delicious, & the complimentary welcome soup is also very tasty, although I wish the serving was a little bigger. The staff are generally friendly & welcoming. The only downside is that the restaurant seems a bit understaffed during busy hours.

However, what really disappoints me is the way they handle cash payments.

On one visit, I paid in cash & was supposed to receive around $2-3 in change. Instead of giving me my change, the staff simply said'thank you' & moved on, as if the remaining money was automatically considered a tip.

On my most recent visit, my bill was a little over $50, & I paid with a $100 bill. After taking my money, the cashier asked me how much change I wanted back. That made me feel very uncomfortable. The proper procedure should be to return the full change first, & then let the customer decide whether or not to leave a tip. Tipping should always be voluntary, not something customers feel pressured into.

I really enjoy the food & would like to keep coming back, but I hope management addresses this issue because it leaves a very negative impression.

If you like katsu then this is your place to go. The meat is tender but very crispy on the outside & the sauce is delicious. They also give a generous serving of shredded cabbage.

We just arrived in Montreal for the first time. Stumbled across this resto has glowing reviews on Google. Excited to try our first meal.
The staff greeted us with no smile. May be they are stressed out 🤷🏻?♂?the resto was half full.
We ordered Katsu Cabonara Mala (interesting flavour) & mixed Brick cheese (meh). Then I found a hard plastic piece in my Katsu cabonara sauce!! 🤮NO apologies when told the waiter. deducted 15% from the katsu dish.
Someone could seriously be hurt if they accidentally swallow this piece. 😢
Not returning ….

I just decided to try this place out of the blue & it was very good. I tried the chicken Japanese Katsu, which are fried chicken strips & they were very good; notably, the sauce really added to the flavor. The serving size is huge, so it was basically two meals for me but should be more than enough for almost anyone. The little side salad was the only thing that wasn't very tasty, but it was a small part of the meal. They have a lot of other options as well, I'm not even sure which ones to try next.

I had a great lunch at Katsuya today. The interior is very clean & modern which makes for a pleasant dining environment. The lunch special was a great deal & the food came out piping hot just a few minutes after we ordered. The sauce that comes with the katsu is delicious & complements the meal perfectly. I appreciate the consistency here because I have been twice now & both times were excellent.

The freshness & crispiness of the donkatsu I had on-site were truly excellent. The sauce for dipping the donkatsu is absolutely delicious. I definitely want to come back. The staff serving the food was also very friendly.

Katsuya has been on my'Want to go' list for years & on end of February, me & my friends decided to go give it a try it. I really loved their Japanese Katsuya chicken & karaage! Super crunchy & sweet-salty sauce balances the flavours. We ate during lunch period so it was nice & peaceful that we're able to have conversations, & service was quick. Prices is roughly $16-$22 depending on what you get. I recommend coming here with friends or a quick lunch/dinner, as it's fulfilling!
