Afficher toutsauce(58) cheese(46) chicken(40) udon(38) soup(35) pork(35) recommend(29) japanese(27) sweet(27) curry(27) crispy(26) rice(24)Katsuya has been on my'Want to go' list for years & on end of February, me & my friends decided to go give it a try it. I really loved their Japanese Katsuya chicken & karaage! Super crunchy & sweet-salty sauce balances the flavours. We ate during lunch period so it was nice & peaceful that we're able to have conversations, & service was quick. Prices is roughly $16-$22 depending on what you get. I recommend coming here with friends or a quick lunch/dinner, as it's fulfilling!
The place was good , with pretty flavour sauce . Everything around 20$
Ordered takeout, red carbonara katsu. I didn't expect to receive 2 katsu which is generous. Unfortunetly, they didn't taste like meat, only like oil. The carbonara sauce was pretty tasty & creamy. Not at all spicy if you eat spocy food now & then. The rice came in a small portion, which with the creamy carbonara sauce & the oily katsu made the dish very heavy. There are pickled radish & cabbage salad, which were yummy, to help but it couldn't counterattack the heaviness.
Hum first of all, they play ads of their own restaurant on their TVs in their own restaurant. Like... 🦍 But anyways.
I ordered the japanese tonkatsu pork loin for 18.95$ + tax + tips. The meat was cooked nicely & breaded nicely. It had 6-7 pieces of freshly cut meats for me to enjoy & taste. The meal also comes with a mortar & pestle (pestle & mortar) where you can grind the seeds to drizzle the sizzle on the rizzle. It also came with rice (nice) & a sauce for the meat. Now, let me be frank, the sauce, not really it, too sweet & feels like it takes away from the meat experience. The cabbage was too shredded, this causes the cabbage to be harder to pickup'individually', picking a bit of the cabbage ends up picking 60-70% with one pinch. I have to poke at it to get the desired amount. Furthermore, this also causes the cabbage to hold more water as it can't drain the water efficiently which waters out the taste.
The service was great. We were seated promptly & the waiter & waitress were nice & served us nicely (nice).
Now, the elephant in the room, our seating. Oh my chillies, we were seated next to the entrance & the cold freezing blizzard frosty air was whipping our table like a frost monster from Freljord. Not cool (lol).
Anyways, 4/5 stars
Freshly made katsu, perfectly crispy, great portions, what's not to love. Had to rose katsu the sauce was rich & spicy really enjoyed it!
J'ai pris à emporter & c'était tout simplement délicieux ! Le poulet est si croustillant c'est un régal 🤤 Sauce généreuse & gourmande. Je recommande.
Not my first time eating at Katsuya. They are the go-to restaurant when I crave for Tonkatsu.
Big portion, definitely worth your pennies. You can get refill for rice & eat with any remaining sauce on the plate. Great options for sauce.
I like spicy food & their rose sauce is amazing. My boyfriend likes the Mayo Teriyaki, it matches the meaty tonkatsu so well.
This is a great spot to visit whenever I'm craving Japanese-style pork cutlets. The outside is perfectly crispy, the meat is thick & juicy, & every bite is really satisfying. They also offer options like cheese katsu & Korean-style pork cutlets with sauce on top, so it's fun to choose based on what you're in the mood for. If you order the Japanese-style katsu, you can even grind your own sesame seeds & mix them into the sauce-just like in Japan. & paired with an Asahi Super Dry, which you can't skip when it comes to Japanese food… isn't that pretty much heaven? ^^
The Pork Katsu & tempura with tartare sauce were incredible, really delicious & filling. The staffs were really attentive & thoughtful to what I asked & for that I commend them, hats off! Highly recommended restaurant. Good service & great food. Will absolutely order again/go to the restaurant in person. ❤?❤?❤?❤?❤?
Good spot in downtown for a Japanese-Korean meal.
Came here on a Monday for a quick lunch. Even during the busy hour, the place was pretty empty, so food came out fast. The setup reminded me of the Katsuya-style restaurants that are big in South Korea. Tons of tonkatsu variations with Korean street-food like toppokki. This location felt a notch below what you'd get in Seoul, but still better than most spots in North America.
From the Korean side of the menu, I got the mala cream toppokki. Never tried it during its hype era, & it was actually better than I expected. Thin cylindrical rice cakes (which I usually prefer) & a mala cream sauce with enough heat without that heavy carbonara vibe.
The chicken karaage was decent. I went with thigh meat, but they didn't drain the oil properly, so it leaned a bit greasy. For tonkatsu, I'd been craving a proper cheese katsu, so I ordered Gold & Silver (half mozzarella, half cheddar). The cheddar half was too sharp & salty, while the mozzarella side was solid, though the pork crust ran a tad dry.
Still a good option if you want casual Korean & Japanese comfort food downtown at a reasonable price.
The pork Katsu with curry was delicious. Also, the serving of pork is generous, & the meat is so tender. I wish they'd serve it with something other than raw cabbage, but that seems to be the standard way it's served at any katsudon place. They should serve it with tempura vegetables. That being said, as far as shredded, raw cabbage salads go, it was okay - they seasoned it with a light dressing which tasted good, but I'd take a coleslaw over it any day. My other gripe is that they don't provide enough curry (sauce) to go with the meat & rice. Curry is not expensive, so there should be a good amount of it to go with the other elements on the plate - otherwise you're kind of serving an incomplete dish. Thankfully the pork itself was so good, I could look past the shortcomings. Our waitress was attentive & very friendly.
Great food, exactly was expected. I've never been to Japan but the Curry Katsu sauce was better than I imagined. The Takoyakis as an entry are a MUST. Crispy & beautiful presentation. Totally would go back
I love the chicken with 3 sauces. Tried lovely rose tokbokki & it was BOOM! Combine 2 together made my day 🥰🙀
Katsuya offers a pleasant dining experience with friendly service & generous meal portions. The atmosphere is comfortable, & it's easy to enjoy a meal here without feeling rushed.
The Chicken Katsu with Curry Sauce was very flaky & light, with a satisfying crunch & a big portion. The curry sauce was typical Japanese-style curry. It is solid, though nothing extraordinary.
The Pork & Cheese Katsu with Rosée Sauce was crispy & light as well. The rosée sauce had a salty kick, & the combination with pork & cheese was unique & interesting. Definitely worth trying if you like creative twists.
The salad came with a smoky, light dressing that was surprisingly good. The takoyaki was crunchy, which is different from the usual soft, mushy style. The sweet sauce combined with the crunch felt a bit overwhelming after a while, but it's an interesting variation.
Overall, the katsu is excellent & the generous portions make it a satisfying meal. Highly recommend giving Katsuya a try for delicious katsu with some creative twists.
Ordered two chicken Katsu's, one curry & one Rose. Both very different & delicious. Current was flavourful with onions in the curry while the Rose had shrimp & bacon in the creamy & lightly spiced sauce. Food was plentiful & delicious. Would visit again when in Montreal, great meal
As we stepped into the restaurant, we were warmly welcomed by the two waitresses & they were both friendly & patient serving us throughout the night. They took the time to explain us their menu & give us their recommendations & it made the dining experience so much more enjoyable. The food was great. I was surprised by the level of spiciness in the carbonara udon since spicy Japanese food is usually not that spicy. I really liked the kick it gave & it added nicely to the flavours. The carbonara udon I had was quite enjoyable with the thick & creamy sauce which complemented the noodles so well. I do feel like if the tempura shrimp was a bit crispier, it would have been even more amazing. Regardless, I would love to come back & try more of their items in their menu because so many of them looks interesting & delicious.
It was okay, but I was quite disappointed. The tonkatsu was a bit overcooked & dry, the rice was straight out bad. Lettuce was fine, portion size quite large. The sauce had good flavour notes but I felt like it was a bit too acidic. All in all, it's acceptable but not the high quality I was hoping for to match the ones I had in Japan. EDIT: tried again, the pork was a bit better this time & the rice was decent. Not Japan quality, but miles better than anything else in Montreal. The'japanese sauce' remains way too acidic, tastes almost only like vinegar. Next time I'll try another sauce I guess.
Le personnel est gentil & j'espère pouvoir y revenir bientôt. Le katsu fromage & patate douce avec la sauce au curry était incroyable 😍
If you're looking for a top-notch katsu place that's worth every penny, this is it - KATSUYA!!! From the moment you walk in, the service is welcoming & incredibly fast, without ever compromising on quality. The staff is friendly, attentive, & more than happy to answer any questions about the ingredients-full transparency, which is rare to find these days.
Now, the food-absolutely perfect every single time. The katsu is crispy, golden, & perfectly cooked, with a juicy & flavorful interior. Whether you go for the classic pork, chicken, or even a specialty option, every bite is a delight. The sides & sauces are just as impressive, elevating the meal to another level.
Consistency is key, & they nail it. Every visit feels like the first, with the same delicious flavors & high standards. If you're a katsu lover or even just looking for a great meal, this place is a must-visit. 5 stars, no hesitation!
PS: My go-to is either Rose Katsu (Fish) or Rose Udon (shrimp). You're welcome! ✌?😊
The food is too sweet for my taste palate & so I didn't enjoy as much. The hot spicy sauce felt just like siracha so I don't think I am fan. However, the food is fresh & the service is great.
We tried the hot spicy sauce katsu & the karaage chicken supreme appetizer. The garlic spicy sauce katsu might have been better.
