Review Summary

Katsuya is widely regarded as a standout destination in Montreal for authentic, high-quality Japanese comfort food, particularly its signature crispy and tender katsu. Many patrons praise the generous portion sizes, fresh ingredients, and creative menu variations, such as the popular red carbonara and cheese katsu dishes. While the atmosphere is generally described as cozy and modern, and the staff is frequently highlighted for being friendly and attentive, some diners have noted occasional inconsistencies with service speed and wait times during busy periods. Despite a few mixed opinions on specific side dishes and the internal ambiance, the majority of visitors consider the restaurant a reliable and delicious spot that offers excellent value for the price.

Went here on a Tuesday night for supper. Place was busy but not full, we were able to get a seat right. I ordered the honeycomb Katsu, & it basically tasted like I was eating a hot dog. It wasn't great, but maybe that was just the item I ordered. My biggest issue was that the restaurant had a very strong smell of sewage that kinda grossed me out & ruined my appetite.

Our pork katsu had good breading, but the meat inside for our order was a bit thin & not juicy. Quite generous portions. Small clean eatery, there was a bit of a wait time as tables were not cleared promptly. They were perhaps understaffed. Our order was taken but not registered, & another staff came by ~10 mins later to ask us to order (again). We asked for a salad refill & again it was forgotten until we asked a second time. Service/ manpower in this area could be improved, but I have to commend that the servers were always polite.

My partner & I ate here on Friday August 9th around 4PM. This is a small restaurant conveniently located steps away from the Guy Concordia/St Mathieu exit of the metro. It's close to the university & many other great asian restaurants. Decor is modern, clean. Recently renovated as it opened in June of 2024. I heard about it through social media, they have other chains throughout Canada & the videos I saw all featured beautifully presented, generous portions of fried pork, chicken, fish or cheese drizzles in sauces & curries. My experience was just as advsertised, & delicious! Since we dined early, the restaurant was pretty empty. We were seated right away, offered a jug of cold water & showed how to retrieve the menu. They do not serve a printed menu, you will need to scan a QR code at the table to open up a PDF menu. This is easily accesible on their website as well. The specialty is fried chicken, pork cutlets, fish or cheese deep fried in a light breading & coated with a curry or teriyaki, mayo style sauce. There are different types of curries & sauces to choose from, including carbonara which is an original idea. The dishes are served with a small soup, white rice & pickled slaw/vegetables. We ordered an appetizer of the "snow cheese balls" which are deep fried mozzarella balls covered in a sweet honey type powder. Our main meals were the chicken katsu with carbonara & the pork katsu with original curry. The portions were generous, enough to share, & flavors were amazing. Meats were super tender, the curries were mild, not spicy & the breading on the meats were krispy, cooked perfectly. There's a lot I'd love to try, highly recommend coming with more people if you want to order more food & share. Service was friendly, food was speedy & everything was tasty. Must try!

The service is nice, the various katsu are crispy & tender on the inside, I wish that they come with more gravy, because only half of them are covered. But everything FIRE!! & we didn't know the offer for unlimited Rice & soup.

The portion is HUGE, well worth the 20$ price. This shop specializes in fried cutlets (katsu) : you can choose the type of meat you want (chicken, pork, fish) or vegetarian (cheese or sweet potato & cheese) & also the sauce that you want. They have several options to choose from. I tried the curry one & my friend got the sweet chili supreme. Both were nicely fried & sauces were good. Earlier in the month, I tried more stuff from the menu & the quality was maintained. Get the fried cheeseballs & the yuzu highball. Overall, a good place for lunch, for takeout or just a easy supper.
