i have been here twice, but i brought my father who was visiting from California. he & i have been eating sushi since I was a baby in 1994, & my father has been frequenting Morimoto's in Napa for quality rice & fish.
he said that Jun I had some of the best quality nigiri he's had. our server suggested a gorgeous bottle of saké that my father greatly enjoyed (& me too), & the Quebec uni was amazing. I had been looking for quality uni in the city since October 2020, so it was really lovely to get my hands on such a delicious reunion with the flavor.

Wow, amazing! We ordered the larger tasting menu & were absolutely blown away. For reference, I am from Hawaii with a Japanese mom & am very picky about sushi. I've had wonderful sushi in the past, including in Japan, but the various dishes, the sushi & the modest price makes this dinner one of the best I have enjoyed in a long time. The cocktails were also good & the waitstaff helpful & charming. Absolutely a five star experience.

Pros: good service & meal timing (slow enough to enjoy the evening), great saké selection.
Cons: based on comparably priced sushi restaurants in Montreal & North America in general, this is average at best. The sushi quality, cut & presentation needs to be revised. Don't mean to go on & on, but to give an example, the sushi rice is too cooked & mushy. Once this happens it's pretty much game over :-(
Finally, the decor is outdated & lacks atmosphere.
Basically, based on its great reputation we had tried Jun-i 6-7 years ago & weren't overly impressed. Given its continued success & good reviews we decided to give it a second chance & unfortunately it was the same mixed result.
We came for a girls' date night, the ambience & decor were amazing. We both went for the Omakase menu, the quality of the fish is one of the best we've had in Montreal, even Canada, period. My friend & I have enjoyed sushi in Japan, & the quality of the fish at Jun I is top. Sincere compliments to the chef.

Ayant habité 24 ans au Japon, je peux dire que Jun-i est LE meilleur restaurant de sushis à Montréal. Le service y est toujours impeccable & fort sympathique.

No where close to rank 45 on the Best 100 list. Definitely outside of 100. Subpar service quality & servers lack of knowledge of restaurant menu & sushi. Sushi/Sashimi seemed like were made by trainee.
While we had done our booking for 9pm via Libro & there were also availability for 9:30pm we were greeted as if we came to beg for free food at 9:05pm... the host told us, even before asking whether we had a reservation or not, that we would need to wait, only for him to come back & rudely say that the chef was not going to prepare more food so we wouldn't get a table.. I was stunt & told him btw we have a booking at 9pm, so I didn't see what the problem was. The host was rude, raised his tone & then said yes you have a booking but you're late... Shocking as the time was 9:06 & had been waiting for about 3-4 min in the cue... I am bilingual so was able to speak to him in French & tell him that with such a welcome I am really not sure whether I still want this table after all... not the best welcome when you're on a date & as a Montrealer definitely not the impression you want to give to foreign guests.
Knowing that there's plenty more restaurants that offer great Sushis with a more civilized & respectful welcome & hosts, I would consider twice before going back to Jun-I.
That being said the service we received from the waiters afterwards, & not the guy who hosted us thankfully, was really good & amicable. Food was also a reminder that I did well not just walking away & that the whole restaurant shouldn't be judged by one host who doesn't know how to treat & talk to customers who come & spend money in his establishment.
Overall Jun-I is a good place but far from owning the laver sole critics have given it of the best sushi of Montreal.
Having been to Japan & having interacted many times with Japanese people, I would recommend that the owners provide a Japanese 101 culture & etiquette for the host, this could be a nice eye opening experience for him.... Humility, simplicity & respect being at the core of Japanese hospitality.
