Review Summary

Joe Beef is described as a Montreal institution with a bold, indulgent kitchen and a warm, unpretentious vibe that draws crowds and keeps the energy lively. The service is repeatedly praised as attentive, knowledgeable and friendly, with many noting it as a standout part of the experience, though a few visits mention occasional slow pacing or inconsistency during busy nights. The menu is celebrated for rich, butter-forward dishes and crowd-pleasers like foie gras double down, lobster spaghetti, hanger steak, duck and croquettes, with sides and oysters earning praise as well; desserts such as marjolaine and chocolate mousse often shine, while some fish and seafood dishes are described as either extraordinary or a touch salty or under seasoned. The lobster pasta remains a lightning rod for opinion, highly regarded by many but not universally, and price levels are noted as steep, prompting critiques of value on some visits. Overall, it’s viewed as a memorable, sometimes polarizing but quintessential Montreal dining experience, best enjoyed with appetite, an open mind, and a willingness to embrace the theatre and hospitality that define the place.

We came to the Canadian Grand Prix & was recommended Joe Beef for dinner & it did not disappoint. We had to reserve about a month in advance for a party of two but it lived up to the hype. The food was incredible, service was top notch & we had a great time. Pictured is the lobster spaghetti which was 100% worth the price, glazed carrots, & filet mignon. I forget the name of the dessert but it was delicious. Will definitely come again!

We got the bone-in strip, so nice & rich in flavor but over priced. The roasted carrots were delicious. Liked the food but I wish we had another server though. The guy just talked way too much!

Great food overall, but I think it has lost some of its greatness. I recall how difficult it was to get a reservation here 10 years ago. Yes, it is still tough to get the prime reservation time. We were able to snag last-minute reservations for 9:30 p.m.

The restaurant was packed! Clearly, it continues to be a popular spot. Our server was friendly, consistent with everyone's observation that outstanding service is its key strength!

The dishes that we had were all decent, but nothing out of this world. The bone marrow had an interesting spin, but the chawanmushi (Japanese steamed egg) became the main ingredient for the dish, rather than tasting much of the bone marrow & uni.

The server recommended the duck, which happens to be our pick as well. But the meat wasn't as tender as I'd like. The side dish- carrots, turned out to be my favorite dish for the night.

So we liked this place. But a few notes.

We had the Andalouse sausage made with veal, fois gras & sweet bread as a starter. Was especially good. But it was two large sausages. It was very delicate & flavorful. We also had the bread & pickle. Was very tasty. The server suggested this.

Oh!
We also had the Roman gnocchi- which was polenta with Gruyère sauce- absolutely delish!

For the mains I had the lobster spaghetti. It was like a twist on Italian carbonara with lobster. I asked- the lobster is fresh!! 🦞( not frozen). This dish was very very tasty & large!
My husband had the Guinea Hen. It was fine. But not the best. He ate it, enjoyed it for what it was but wouldn't order it again. He didn't really know he's eating'guinea hen'- was more like regular poultry in sauce with vegetables.

We had a 5pm seating & what we didn't like is they kind of rushed you to order. ( in a polite way) but they made everyone order all their courses right away. They brought everything out pretty quickly, one right after the other. Was kind of strange. So you couldn't get a feel for sizes or what else you want after already eating an appetizer. It was all ordered from the top & then served.

The restaurant is super cute & nice. Very pretty atmosphere. Cozy yet elegant. Tastefully decorated.

This was amazing. The darling cozy atmosphere, the food (OMG seafood tower) & the service were so memorable & perfect. But I came on Google to leave a review specifically for Kalina, our waitress. She was the best, friendliest, most knowledgeable waitress we've ever had. & I know, that's a bold statement. SHE made the experience Michelin. She was attentive, thorough, professional & yet warm, kind & genuine. Our meal was paced perfectly & our food selections all coordinated impeccably. Because of Kalina & her suggestions, guidance & expertise. THANK YOU!! Go to Joe Beef & ask for Kalina!

Totally worth it. We had our 10 year anniversary dinner at Joe Beef & it was amazing. A little pricey but good food isn't cheap. You can taste the quality of the ingredients.

Service was awesome & great wine selections! Great beef but all the other apps were kind of mediocre & not quite hit the spot. Charming organic atmosphere & the space is cozy but can feel a bit cramped & you can hear all the noise from other tables. If I return again & i will only have the mains & wine! Other wise it's a bit overhyped & priced.

Another exceptional meal at one of our favorite establishments in montreal. Are compliments to the chef. The food over the years has always been incredibly consistent & delicious. The outstanding items on the menu this evening for sure where the sweet breads & tongue. Expertly prepared & allowing the delicate flavors to come through. The service is always on point & the staff is incredibly well-trained & knowledgeable as well as being very friendly & attentive.

Delicioso.

This spot truly lived up to its expectations! We mostly ordered items from their newer offerings, & each dish impressed us in its own way. The standout for me was the tuna plate-fresh, flavorful, & beautifully presented. It was hands-down my favorite of the evening. Another highlight was the asparagus with foie gras. I wasn't sure what to expect from that combination, but it worked really well. The textures & flavors balanced nicely, making it a memorable bite.

The Dessert was another level. I'm still thinking about the chocolate mousse-it was unbelievably smooth, rich without being too heavy, & absolutely delicious. Definitely one of the best I've had in a while.

Beyond the food, what really made the experience great was the service. Everyone we interacted with was genuinely kind, warm, & attentive. It didn't feel forced or overly formal-just friendly & welcoming in a way that instantly puts you at ease. Honestly, that kind of service makes all the difference.

Overall, it was a fantastic dining experience from start to finish. Great food, lovely staff, & a cozy vibe that makes you want to return. Can't wait to go back & try even more from the menu!

I have been fortunate to eat all over the planet & this was on another level. It exceeded all my expectations. I chose the escargot for an appetizer & the duck for my main & it was exquisite. If I had to choose a'last meal' it would be this.
