Had a really lovely evening at Île Flottante.
It's a tasting experience with no menu. Each course is a delightful surprise-& that's exactly what makes it so special. Every dish felt carefully thought out, with beautiful presentation & really interesting combinations of flavours, textures, & aromas. You can tell there's a lot of creativity & precision behind the experience.
They offer pairings, but I kept it light since I was driving back to Ottawa, & it still felt complete.
Also worth mentioning: the price feels very fair for the quality, especially with their Michelin recognition.
Tip: go with an open mind & take your time-it's meant to be experienced, not rushed. You will also need to make a reservation.
The Emperor Has No Tablecloth.
We arrived for a birthday celebration. We left having celebrated nothing.
Île Flottante charges $130 per person for a vegetarian tasting menu that mistakes visual complexity for culinary achievement. Course after course arrived architecturally composed & gastronomically hollow - flower petals standing in for flavor, smears of sauce substituting for depth, decorative crockery so aggressively mismatched it suggested less a design philosophy than a disorganized cupboard.
The service was, at best, theoretical. Water glasses refilled themselves only through determined intervention. Our server existed primarily as a recurring rumor. When one diner requested a second piece of bread, they were informed this pleasure would carry an additional charge. At $130 a head, the bread is apparently rationed.
No one acknowledged the birthday. Not once.
The Michelin Guide has been generous to this address. One can only assume their inspector visited on an evening when the kitchen remembered to season the food, the servers remembered their tables, & management remembered that hospitality - not merely its aesthetic performance - is the entire point.
Montreal deserves better. So did the birthday guest.
Deserves more than just a Michelin distinction. They have a rotating blind tasting menu & every course was packed with a different set of flavors.
The first restaurant that I told myself I need to come back to often. Highly recommend!
Flavour combinations paired well with each other & tasted light & delicate. Really enjoyed the flavours of each dish. The only problem was that the sauce element of each savoury course was a little too salty. The rest of the dish would be perfectly fine but then I would get a bit of sauce & it would be too salty.
One of the best meals of my life. Often fine dining is full of'interesting' bites but you're not sure if you'like' them… in this case, the food was both interesting & comforting. Highly recommend.
My husband & I had the tasting menu paired with the wine & it was fantastic! The owner & employees were really cool & down to earth & you can tell it's their passion. They also had a grappa which was the most tasty I've ever had-connecting really special!
Loved my experience. The second you walk in, you can see their attention to details. Our table was setup impeccably. The host was clearly well trained & well spoken. They have a tasting menu that's diverse, elegant & overall exquisite. No 2 dishes were alike. The waiter was very knowledgeable about everything we had. The cocktails were fabulous.
Very disappointing experience at Ile Flottante based on what we were expecting. We initially asked for a drinks or cocktail menu & were told that they had none. We then asked if they could make cocktails with St-Germain to which they answered that they would check. They then came back with Aperol St Germain Spritz without asking us which cocktail we wanted. The Spritz were very underwhelming.
The food overall was ordinary. The first few courses were disappointing. For 5 salty courses, one was essentially a piece of bread with butter & a tiny onion soup dip while another one consisted of a single oyster with bechamel sauce & a little bit of caviar on top. The last few salty courses were better.
The 2 dessert courses were excellent & very original but the rest of the experience was very disappointing, especially at this price point. Unfortunately, we feel that there are much better restaurants in terms of service, food quality & originality & definitely at lower price points in Montreal. We will not return.
Not sure what other people are experiencing, but this is easily the worst restaurant experience we've had in Montreal.
Started with a martini that tasted like soap for some reason. Sent it back. First thing they served us was a tiny bit of beef tartare on an oyster shell (god knows why) with a'bechamel' that was just warm milk. So it tasted like warm milk. I don't even know what to say about that except to ask the question, why? Why would someone do that?
Next up was a caramelized onion bread that was so doughy it just turned into a ball when picking it up. So weird & gross. It was served with a broth that was literally as salty as soy sauce. Both of those things were inedible. We asked them to take it away almost immediately.
Then came the salad. Roquette DRENCHED in oil with shredded cheese on top. Cheese was good, the salad was so wet that the entire thing could be picked up with a fork in one go.'Clumps' seemed to be the theme of the evening. Again: gross, inedible, unwanted.
Fortunately, our server allowed us to nope out of the rest of it. The mains we saw other people getting looked like more clump & we weren't going to spend an evening just sending plates away seconds after getting them.
Note, also, one server on Friday night for a full house.
There are zero situations in which I would recommend this mess to anyone.
We had a great time at Ile Flotante (party of 6).
Food, wine & service were amazing 🤩 & I highly recommend it if you are thinking about visiting.
Thanks to everyone that took good care of us at Ile Flotante, we'll be back!
I can confidently say that this may be one of my favourite restaurants in Montreal. Everything dish was executed perfectly, nice balance of flavours & textures.
It is definitely a fancier restaurant but it was so worth every penny. I would keep going back every season to try their menus on rotation.
I would recommend this place if you are into finer dinning or else it would just be wasted on you.
Side note: I went in December when they had the live bad playing which just elevated my whole experience.
We went to Île Flottante for my birthday & both the food & the service were impeccable. What really stands out is the concept: you share your dietary restrictions, & they create a selection of dishes that feel original, unexpected, & very well executed.
The service was attentive without being overbearing, & the atmosphere is cozy & intimate. Tuesday nights are especially nice if you enjoy a livelier, brighter music vibe. We'd definitely recommend going then.
It's also very vegetarian- & vegan-friendly, which makes it an easy choice for mixed groups. Overall, a thoughtful, memorable experience.
