I've got their pizza. The taste is very good. The staff is friendly. I've got takeout, but judging from what I saw, they have nice atmosphere, dimmed light & not too loud.

Ce restaurant ne mérite plus ses lettres de noblesse. Jadis peut-être, mais aujourd'hui, la gloire est bien fanée. Nous avons commandé deux pizzas, une entrée, un plat de pâtes & un mijoté. Autant le dire franchement : si vous tenez à votre réputation, cessez immédiatement de servir de la pizza. Non seulement vous n'y excellez pas, mais c'est une véritable catastrophe, & je ne suis pas le seul à le constater. Les clients parlent, mais vous semblez refuser d'entendre.

Ma Roma e Nizza ? Une caricature. Une montagne d'oignons caramélisés, au point d'être écoeurante, des anchois rarissimes comme s'ils étaient en voie d'extinction, & une pâte digne d'une boulangerie du dimanche soir : épaisse, craquante, huileuse, sans âme ni structure. Pas d'alvéoles, pas de légèreté, pas de vie. Une pizza non découpée, en prime. Dans la Petite Italie…

Le service, certes, a relevé le niveau : courtois & attentif. Les cocktails, corrects mais sans éclat. Encore faut-il savoir qu'un lychee martini n'a rien à voir avec un dry martini & qu'il ne s'accompagne surtout pas d'une olive. Quant au choix de vins au verre, il est famélique. Après tant d'années en mode « apportez votre vin », n'avoir su bâtir une carte cohérente est une incompréhension totale de l'utilité d'un permis de débit.

Seule lumière dans ce tableau : la macreuse braisée, réussie & à la hauteur de son prix.

En conclusion, je vous le dis sans détour : abandonnez la pizza, ou engagez enfin un artisan qui en maîtrise l'art. Car à persister dans cette voie, vous ne faites que ternir la réputation de la maison.

Unpretentious Fine Dining

As an artist (& not one that comes from a moneyed background),'fine dining' is something that can be relatively impossible. In fact, most of the typical fine dining experiences make me queasy: overpriced, minuscule morsels of food that leave you heading for a burger immediately after you've emptied your paycheque on a few forkfuls of'food', having just spent 3 hours amongst horribly pretentious influencers & Instagrammers, unable to avoid hearing their inane & vapid yammering from every corner of the restaurant. (I also NEVER wait in line to go eat somewhere… Montréal seems to be just as famous for people waiting in line for eggs on toast as it is for being served eggs on toast. It's eggs on toast, people, c'mon!!). I do not feel comfortable forcing myself TO BE comfortable in these establishments.

On the very special occasion that I do end up with the opportunity to eat out somewhere, it needs to be worth it, & on realistic terms. It often helps when friends or family come to town, & we go out for meals. Not that we don't treat ourselves on the regular, but it beats eating in a tiny flat & having to do the dishes in an even smaller kitchen. & just a couple of blocks away, with the same comforts of being in a homely environment, is the incredibly unique, & equally unpretentious restaurant Il Bazalli, at the crossroads of Little Italy & La Petite Patrie, just a few blocks east of St Laurent on Beaubien.

This gem of a neighbourhood eatery serves truly amazing Italian cuisine, while nestled in mismatched chairs & ramshackle booths. Oh, & being sung to by the owner & chef, Davide Bazalli. Yes. Opera no less. If you have heard about'that Italian place in Montréal with the handsome opera singer', this is the place.

We have been to Il Bazalli several times since they opened ten years ago, & I have never left a review. We most recently visited for my birthday celebration, & we were not let down! They were able to cater to our group of sixteen, & there was something there for everyone. The staff were extremely courteous & patient, not to mention extremely helpful & very knowledgeable about the food & wine selection. Over the past years, I think I have had most items from the menu, if not ordered for myself, but shared from the plate of my wife. The cod accras are a usual favourite, but tonight I went for their braised beef & mushroom stuffed arancini (a few months back, during the restaurant's anniversary celebrations, we had BEET arancini!!) About the size of a walnut, I felt like a bit of a savage eating these crispy morsels whole, but they were incredible! For my main, I had the Linguini'Goloso' (see photo) which was Parmigiano Reggiano cream, smoked lardons, mushrooms, caramelized onions & Parmigiano Reggiano. Ravioli, cod filet in pizzaïoli sauce, braised beef scoter, pizza, beef & salmon tartare, not one of our 16 guests were left disappointed! We were only disappointed we didn't have room for dessert, although this birthday boy did get a slice of almond & orange cake (vegan & gluten free!)

In a persistently gentrifying city that seems to be favouring pretention over true cultural substance, Il Bazalli is the type of place one would hope to find in their neighbourhood. Check it out!

J'ai déjà visité Il Bazzali à trois reprises &, à chaque fois, je suis encore plus séduit. La qualité des plats est remarquable : les pâtes sont toujours parfaitement al dente & les pizzas sont excellentes, avec une pâte savoureuse & bien travaillée. On sent vraiment le soin & la technique en cuisine. En revanche, un point négatif qui s'est répété à chacune de mes visites : les bières en canette. Elles ne sont ni fraîches ni glacées, mais tièdes, ce qui est franchement désagréable à boire, surtout lorsqu'on accompagne un repas aussi délicieux. Cette faiblesse surprend dans un restaurant de ce niveau, car elle affecte l'expérience globale. Cette fois-ci, nous nous sommes installés sur la terrasse arrière, qui est en réalité le parking du restaurant, mais qui a été aménagé pour répondre à la forte demande. Ce n'est pas l'endroit le plus charmant, mais il reste fonctionnel & permet de profiter de l'extérieur. Malgré ces points, je recommande vivement Il Bazzali pour la qualité exceptionnelle de sa cuisine.

Pour ma part, j'ai goûté au tartare de boeuf, je l'ai trouvé excellent, mais j'ai été un peu déçu de ma pizza, surtout de la croûte, elle était plutôt dure & manquait de bulles, d'air loin des pizzas au four à bois italiennes. Le risotto était excellent. Par contre

Wenn ich den Bewertungen Glauben schenken kann, ist das Restaurant ein guter Platz um Pasta zu essen. Für Pizzas absolut keine Empfehlung unsererseits. Da haben wir schon wesentlich bessere gegessen und das günstiger.

Excellent établissement de quartier avec une magnifique terrasse durant la période estivale. La sélection d'entrées est bien variée. En ce qui a trait aux plats principaux, les amateurs de pâtes & de pizzas ne seront pas déçus! Il y a d'autres choix évidemment. Belle carte des dessert & de digestif. La carte des vins est intéressante avec un bon rapport qualité prix.

The outdoor area was nice to enjoy a meal outside. The service was ok. However, my rating isn't based on this. We got pasta & pizza to share. The crust felt soggy. The pasta was better but for 30$+ a plate the protein was lacking. For me, the food was subpar for the price.

Food was top notch, ambiance was great.
They had great vegan options which is a requisite for us. Varied & original too! We had the vegan bolognese pizza & pastas, both were great!
The chef is also a tenor & he sang that night with his band. That was unexpected but they were good!

A very unique tasting pizza, & I mean that in the best way. My only disappointment was when my plate was empty. The chef/owner came out of the kitchen every hour, on the hour (& for 3 different birthdays while we were there) to sing for the patrons. & what an amazing voice he has, really added to the classic Italian resto vibe. Lastly, the beer selection. Phenomenal. Instead of being like every other restaurant & only having base drinks & a few IPAs, they had a wide selection for every taste.

La sauce tomate est vraiment goûteuse & semble être faite à base de bons produits. On sent bien la tomate & les aromates sont très équilibrés. En revanche, la pâte à pizza était peu aérienne, sa mâche rappelait plutôt le pain. Le lieu reste chaleureux & joliment décoré mais je ne sais pas si cela vaut le prix.

I visited this Italian restaurant about two weeks ago & tried their "MTL à Table" discovery menu, which featured only pasta as the main course. I'd rate the food 4 out of 5 stars-it was very good, but compared to other Italian restaurants I've tried, it didn't quite stand out as much. That said, the pizza here seems very popular, & I'd be interested in coming back to give it a try. The ambiance was great, & the staff were friendly & attentive, making it a nice spot to enjoy a meal. I'd recommend this place for the overall experience, especially if you're in the mood for a cozy atmosphere & welcoming service.

Petite trattoria fort sympathique, avec terrasse arrière, au décor original fait de matériaux recyclés, surtout en bois. Cuisine typique & savoureuse avec d'excellentes pâtes fraîches & de bonnes pizzas. Le chef-proprio Davide est omniprésent & pousse la note à plusieurs reprises, en très bon ténor qu'il est. Belle expérience ! Ciao !

Joli restaurant. Ambiance détendue. Le menu propose plusieurs plats sans gluten, dont un plat de pâtes fraîches sans gluten ce qui est plutot rare: les strozzapreti aux champignons. Habituellement, il faut débourser quelques dollars de plus pour obtenir une alternative sans gluten pour un plat de pâtes ou de pizza. J'ai donc été assez surprise de trouver au menu un plat de strozzapreti spécifiquement conçu sans gluten (& donc sans nécessité de débourser le surplus habituel. Même chose pour le dessert : un savoureux gâteau aux amandes & à l'orange. Une carte de vin bien fournie complète le tout. Je vous recommande vivement la visite.

Loved my pizza. Lardons & arugula topping, & it was delicious. My partner's Caesar salad with chicken was not great. I partially blame her, because an adult should not be ordering Caesar salad with ANYTHING on the side. A Caesar salad should be self sufficient. However, the romaine & the breaded chicken topping were not the best. (As I earlier wrote, if you order Caesar salad with chicken, you deserve what you get.) The romaine was past prime. The chicken was not done right. But I'd go back here, because everything else I saw in the restaurant says that they deserve a second chance. & my pizza was just so good!
