The restaurant is warm & cozy with interesting woodwork details. Our servers were attentive & friendly & even the chef came to say hello. The food was authentic with very large portions. We will be back next time visiting Montreal.

Right from the start it was a wonderful experience. The service is warm. The selection from the menu is great. The taste & quality was outstanding. Everything from the pasta to the beef was excellent. The chef/owner, Davide, came out to see us. I have never had that happen before. He then proceeded to sing to everyone in the restaurant. What a voice! This is definitely a restaurant you need to go to!

Unpretentious Fine Dining

As an artist (& not one that comes from a moneyed background),'fine dining' is something that can be relatively impossible. In fact, most of the typical fine dining experiences make me queasy: overpriced, minuscule morsels of food that leave you heading for a burger immediately after you've emptied your paycheque on a few forkfuls of'food', having just spent 3 hours amongst horribly pretentious influencers & Instagrammers, unable to avoid hearing their inane & vapid yammering from every corner of the restaurant. (I also NEVER wait in line to go eat somewhere… Montréal seems to be just as famous for people waiting in line for eggs on toast as it is for being served eggs on toast. It's eggs on toast, people, c'mon!!). I do not feel comfortable forcing myself TO BE comfortable in these establishments.

On the very special occasion that I do end up with the opportunity to eat out somewhere, it needs to be worth it, & on realistic terms. It often helps when friends or family come to town, & we go out for meals. Not that we don't treat ourselves on the regular, but it beats eating in a tiny flat & having to do the dishes in an even smaller kitchen. & just a couple of blocks away, with the same comforts of being in a homely environment, is the incredibly unique, & equally unpretentious restaurant Il Bazalli, at the crossroads of Little Italy & La Petite Patrie, just a few blocks east of St Laurent on Beaubien.

This gem of a neighbourhood eatery serves truly amazing Italian cuisine, while nestled in mismatched chairs & ramshackle booths. Oh, & being sung to by the owner & chef, Davide Bazalli. Yes. Opera no less. If you have heard about'that Italian place in Montréal with the handsome opera singer', this is the place.

We have been to Il Bazalli several times since they opened ten years ago, & I have never left a review. We most recently visited for my birthday celebration, & we were not let down! They were able to cater to our group of sixteen, & there was something there for everyone. The staff were extremely courteous & patient, not to mention extremely helpful & very knowledgeable about the food & wine selection. Over the past years, I think I have had most items from the menu, if not ordered for myself, but shared from the plate of my wife. The cod accras are a usual favourite, but tonight I went for their braised beef & mushroom stuffed arancini (a few months back, during the restaurant's anniversary celebrations, we had BEET arancini!!) About the size of a walnut, I felt like a bit of a savage eating these crispy morsels whole, but they were incredible! For my main, I had the Linguini'Goloso' (see photo) which was Parmigiano Reggiano cream, smoked lardons, mushrooms, caramelized onions & Parmigiano Reggiano. Ravioli, cod filet in pizzaïoli sauce, braised beef scoter, pizza, beef & salmon tartare, not one of our 16 guests were left disappointed! We were only disappointed we didn't have room for dessert, although this birthday boy did get a slice of almond & orange cake (vegan & gluten free!)

In a persistently gentrifying city that seems to be favouring pretention over true cultural substance, Il Bazalli is the type of place one would hope to find in their neighbourhood. Check it out!

Scrumdelicious pastas. Nice service, prompt to refill our water & wine glasses. I'm not a fan of surprise signing & there is less chance during August as the chef is quite busy that plays in our favour.
Tartare to start, 2 plates of pasta, a tiramisu & 2 glasses of wine each totals to 160 +taxes & tip. Not bad.

Très bon italien !!! Enfin !! Depuis qu'on habite Montréal, on cherchait un bon italien. On s'était arrêté devant il y a un an mais c'est fermlors de l'heure du lunch.
On s'y est repris aujourd'hui en soirée.
& on ne regrette pas, les linguini sont délicieuses, les gnocchi super tendre & le tiramisu vraiment bon.
Le tout accompagné d'une bonne carte de vin & de cocktail & d'une super ambiance avec le chef qui vient chanter au milieu de la salle pour passer une soirée parfaite.
La facture est un peu cher mais ça en vaut vraiment la peine.

Do yourself a favour & dine here. I found it almost by accident several years ago searching for a place in my neighbourhood & have been several times since. The food is superb & never too salty (which I love) Their wine list is clearly made by someone who knows wine & includes several private importations. Their chef is an accomplished opera singer & sometimes comes out of the kitchen to wander through the tables to sing. Il Bazzali is a credit to the Montreal restaurant scene & we just had an exceptional meal for two with shared entree & dessert & two glasses of wine for 129 $ before tip.

Excellent resto que j'ai découvert par hasard j'avais terriblement faim & j'avais envie de bons poissons & de pâtes fraîches & j'ai été comblé. Le service est impeccable le chef aussi moi & mon ami, nous avons eu le droit à une belle prestation & démonstration du chanteur chef ténor, je recommande ce restaurant à tout le monde qui veut découvrir la cuisine italienne. Le chef est également venu nous voir à la table & nous avons discuté c'était très agréable. Je suis une ancienne serveuse, & ça faisait très longtemps que j'avais été aussi bien servi Merci à toute l'équipe. Continuez votre beau travail

staff was super nice, the pasta was fantastic exactly how I wanted it. The chef came out & sang to the whole restaurant & also spoke with us towards the end. Overall amazing experience great service great food & drinks were good as well, thank you for the experience

Les plats sont généreux.
La table d'hôte est très abordable & cela, reflète la qualité du repas, qui n'a rien de transcendant, même, si, on sent qu'il y a des efforts en cuisine pour élaborer la carte, à mon avis trop longue pour que les plats soient très bien exécutés.
Le personnel est sympathique, chaleureux & à l'écoute de ses clients . Le chef qui est aussi chanteur à ses heures pour créer une ambiance agréable, prend la peine de venir saluer ses clients. C'est très aimable.
Le trou normand est bien arrosé en Vodka. Encore une fois c'est généreux.
Bref, c'est un petit resto de quartier moyen, mais très abordable.

Food was top notch, ambiance was great.
They had great vegan options which is a requisite for us. Varied & original too! We had the vegan bolognese pizza & pastas, both were great!
The chef is also a tenor & he sang that night with his band. That was unexpected but they were good!

Mon conjoint & moi sommes allés pour la première fois dans ce restaurant au tout début de notre relation, il y a déjà plusieurs années, sans savoir réellement où nous allions. C'était la plus belle expérience que nous avons vécu & encore notre restaurant préféré à ce jour. Les employés sont accueillants & chaleureux, le chef l'est tout autant & que dire de sa voix quand il chante & bien sûr, la nourriture y est succulente. C'est notre restaurant préféré depuis ce jour, & nous y retournerons année après année.

Restaurant sans prétention, convivial & charmant, service rapide, chaleureux, attentionné & avec son lot de bons conseils. Nourriture italienne délicieuse à base de bons produits italiens & locaux, bien apprêtés & des quantités très généreuses. Les prix sont raisonnables. Le plus : le chef qui va à la rencontre des clients & chante gaiement des airs d'opéra. Une très belle expérience.
