Review Summary

Hof Kelsten is described as a standout bakery with buttery, flaky croissants and a broad range of viennoiserie and savory pastries, with the chocolate babka and zaatar torsade frequently highlighted and rugelach noted when available as exceptional. Matzoh ball soup and the egg salad sandwich are repeatedly praised, and the bread and pastries are often regarded as reliable or excellent across visits, with some reviewers noting the cafe quality like full bodied coffee. The space can feel limited for eating in, with seating mostly stools or standing room, though the atmosphere and service are generally friendly; a few comments mention language barriers or uneven attentiveness. While a few reviewers compare value and price to other bakeries, the consensus remains that Hof Kelsten earns a place on many Montreal lists and is worth multiple visits for those seeking variety and technical pastry perfection.

J'en suis à ma 5e visites, les produits sont de grande qualité, tant le café que le salé. Cependant, je suis toujours à la recherche de ma première visite agréable!

Authentic cookies, brioche, pastries & bread. The crispness of the pastry, taste of butter, delicious scent were all amazing ! Wish I could try everything so I will definitely go back

We walked so much to get food here & they were out of Rugelach & didn't have a working oven to heat up the croissant so we just left.

Life-changing chocolate babka, I don't know how else to say this. Holy moly, I'm still processing how good this was.

Les viennoiseries sont bonnes, les pains aussi. Mais le service est froid & hautain. On me répète sans arrêt que leur vrai clientèle sont les restaurants. & ça paraît. Ils n'ont pas le sens du service aux clients de la boulangerie.

Awesome bakery with unique products & some of the classics. The chocolate chunk biscottis are delicious (to be noted: not Italian kind). Also the challah. I've tried many of their products over time. Today the pesto pizza & latte with coconut milk def didn't disappoint! :-)

Great bread. So so service. Half the time they give me my bread slices in different sections in a bag instead of looking like a whole bread. How hard is it to bag bread correctly. It's a bakery for crying out loud!

The quality of the breads are decent, but the pastries are mediocre. More frustrating are the wild prices of the pastries - an almond croissant is a whopping $5.20 (tx incl). If you want croissants of incredible quality & a third of the price(!), just walk down the street to Kouign Amann.

Loved stopping in here. Was excited to see Borscht on the menu & it did NOT disappoint. Being from Ukrainian descent, I've eaten a fair amount of borscht, however, I've never tried a version with what seemed like pickled beets. It was phenomenal with the pickled beets - Hof's borscht is thick & has a tinge of vinegar & was served with sour cream on top (so they know what they're doing). Will be back for the borscht for sure. We also tried the cheese danish which was awesome, the homemade iced tea (which my husband describes as tasting like jelly beans), & bought a loaf of challah to bring home (which also paired well with the soup!). The coffee was unfortunately underwhelming for me, a bit too acidic for my personal preference. The interior of the space is a bit industrial yet cozy, it was nice to pass some time on a rainy day with a coffee & soup. Will absolutely be back.

Hands down, one of the best croissants in all of Montreal. The bonus was the incredibly smooth Late to wash it down with. It's the simple things that show that you are the best.

Very innovative, absolutely not what my grandma would make traditionally, but they're creative & very good. Love their knish, cheese breads, cheese danishes with jalapeno jam. Absolutely love their babka (the only complaint about their babka is that it's hard to remove the parment paper lining). They do tend to run out of things fast, so make sure to check with them if you plan to come in the afternoon. No toilets available for customers. Some staffs are cold, but I come there for the baked goods.

One of the best bakeries in Montreal. Excellent bread & croissants, & always new products to try. One of my favourites is the all-dressed croissant baked with cream cheese inside.
