Review Summary

Hof Kelsten is described as a standout bakery with buttery, flaky croissants and a broad range of viennoiserie and savory pastries, with the chocolate babka and zaatar torsade frequently highlighted and rugelach noted when available as exceptional. Matzoh ball soup and the egg salad sandwich are repeatedly praised, and the bread and pastries are often regarded as reliable or excellent across visits, with some reviewers noting the cafe quality like full bodied coffee. The space can feel limited for eating in, with seating mostly stools or standing room, though the atmosphere and service are generally friendly; a few comments mention language barriers or uneven attentiveness. While a few reviewers compare value and price to other bakeries, the consensus remains that Hof Kelsten earns a place on many Montreal lists and is worth multiple visits for those seeking variety and technical pastry perfection.

I finally got to try this specialty bakery & it did not disappoint. Everything was fresh & delicious, from the pastries to the sandwiches & even the coffee was well prepared. Service was quick & welcoming. Will definitely be back!

By far best bakery! All dressed croissants were delicious. The coffee was full bodied & smooth & rich & not bitter.

Very good selection of baked goods. The Babka is very well made but you need to get there early to get one as they fly off the shelves. Good coffee, the staff does a very good job & is always courteous & friendly. One of my go-to stops whenever I am in Montreal.

I believe I got the ricotta & zaatar pastry which was DIVINE. I've gotten bread here too & it's always been great. The coffee, however, isn't the greatest but definitely come here for the food!

I can see why this is one of the best bakeries in Montreal. The service as I was greeted was exceptional, probably one of the friendliest. I tried their samples, as well as one sweet (cinnamon danish) & one savoury pastry (cheese & spinach danish) . Fresh & delicious. What surprised me was the coffee - it was one of the best lattes I've had. Will definitely be coming back.

Best oatmeal cookies in Montreal! This hidden little bakery on the Plateau makes exquisite pastries with a friendly smile, & I'm happy to see that it's become very popular recently for coffee or lunch, which is well deserved. Try their white "milk" bread!

I enjoyed the coffee so much! It's been a while since I had a latte with acidity. Milk foam on top & latte art was perfect. The cafe smelled of fresh bread! I tried the baguette, croissant, & a few pastries; they were good overall. I had hoped the croissant would be a bit more crunchy, but the overall experience was nice with friendly staff. Highly recommend

Loved stopping in here. Was excited to see Borscht on the menu & it did NOT disappoint. Being from Ukrainian descent, I've eaten a fair amount of borscht, however, I've never tried a version with what seemed like pickled beets. It was phenomenal with the pickled beets - Hof's borscht is thick & has a tinge of vinegar & was served with sour cream on top (so they know what they're doing). Will be back for the borscht for sure. We also tried the cheese danish which was awesome, the homemade iced tea (which my husband describes as tasting like jelly beans), & bought a loaf of challah to bring home (which also paired well with the soup!). The coffee was unfortunately underwhelming for me, a bit too acidic for my personal preference. The interior of the space is a bit industrial yet cozy, it was nice to pass some time on a rainy day with a coffee & soup. Will absolutely be back.

Absolutely superb! Everything was beyond expectations. The amandine was so perfect it cannot have existed. The coffee was clean, complex, but still fairly caramelly for a third wave cup. The barista didn't just hate me, she was clearly astrally projecting while I was talking. 10/10. I've always liked montreal, but now I'm strongly considering moving there on a stolen snowmobile if/when Trump steals the 2024 election!
