Absolutely my fave dinner for our Montreal trip. Everything was super tasty, especially that miso-aged DUCK! I was convinced to go by the reviews about the duck, & it exceeded all of our expectations. This was such a lovely experience, & such a great way to get a variation of Japanese flavours in Montreal. Our server was amazing & did not hesitate to explain any questions we had about the menu, including how many dishes she suggested for our group size, as well as our options for a tasting menu if we wanted. We ended up just ordering a la carte, but I'm sure we would have loved the tasting menu just as much. Food came out in waves based on when she thought food should come out, & it was a phenomenal experience. We'll have to make this a stop everytime we're back.

Disclaimer: This review is more of a 3.5/5 star than a 4, but I'm giving it a 4 because I would actually still come back just for the sushi.

Pros:

1. Sushi was terrific. Some of the best in the city. & that includes the rice as well, which was phenomenal.

2. The meats were also A1. Though, I hope they weren't cooked sous-vide (that method is being phased out because of microplastic contamination) but I have a suspicion they were. Owner, feel free to confirm. Either way, excellent.

Cons:

1. Seating at the bar (if you're lucky not be facing a literal wall) is uncomfortable for longer than an hour.

2. Plates came out at random. Meat, then sushi, then noodles, then meat, etc. Insulting to the sushi in my opinion.

3. This is one of those devious sharing-plate restaurants that lets you easily rack up a big bill with only a couple of drinks & a few sharing plates without really noticing the total until you get the bill. Caveat emptor. But either way this style of restaurant is fading away, people are tired of sharing & overpaying for small portions.

4. The steak, for example, is far too good to be served on its own without any accompaniment. It's seems really silly. It's a sneaky way to rack up another $30 charge just to get to taste a few slices of beef. But it was good.

5. Some dishes were not well balanced, like the paprika noodles. Extremely cloy in the mouth. The ice cream suffers the same problem: overpowered. It's as if whoever is tasting the food in the kitchen is a heavy smoker or drinker because those dishes were not balanced whatsoever.

6. Last but not least, Fleurs & Cadeaux is peak'Montreal service'. Cold & ironically unfriendly, as if they're doing you a grand favour by letting you in. Fake smiles that disappear the moment they turn away, & they won't bother asking if you liked your food or how the evening is going. Also, a restaurant of this caliber shouldn't let staff dress in tattered Value Village. Again, that classic'ironic' Montreal service that just makes me cringe. This isn't unique to Fleurs & Cadeaux, it's just endemic to this city.

In short, despite the lack of good service & comfort & some issues with some of the dishes, this place cares about quality especially when it comes to the sushi.

Overall, the food & atmosphere were very good, & everything we received was enjoyable. There were, however, some delays that affected the experience. Even with a reservation, we waited about 30 minutes to be seated. A few of the dishes we ordered also took quite a long time to arrive, & after waiting more than 1.5 hours, we decided to cancel part of the order & eat what had already been served.

The quality was definitely there, & with smoother timing, this could have been an even better experience.

Such a nice restaurant! They were able to seat us even though we did not have a reservation. Very unique options on their menu. It is designed for sharing so we got 5 plates to shared for 2 people. That was a perfect amount & even one less plate would have been enough. We got the duck, the tofu & mushroom dish, the vegetable of the moment, the chicken, & the udon noodles. Would definitely recommend all the dishes they all had a uniqueness to them & were very delicious & nicely presented! We also had ice cream for dessert & that was a nice end to our meal.

Really recommend this place! Very nice setting.

The food was wonderful. Melt in your mouth sashimi & fantastic grilled meats.

The menu could be improved. The format is a little unusual. All of the dishes are meant to be shared by the group & the recommendation is that a couple order & share 3-5 dishes. Although our server explained that when she arrived, it was confusing at first & could easily be explained on the menu.

That's only a minor issue. All in all, a great restaurant. I would go back again.

Not all dishes are equal, very variable,
The highlight really is the chicken nanban, we often go there & just order 3 plates of it.
Service & Atmosphere is great

I was really looking forward to trying this restaurant in Chinatown & Montreal, however, the food was frankly underwhelming & confusing. I'm of Chinese origin & have spent my entire life eating a variety of Asian food, especially Chinese (of course) & Japanese food. This restaurant calls itself Japanese (per their website & Instagram) & has a'fusion' menu if you look closely - mix of Japanese cooking, Chinese flavours, & some French ingredients. To me, the marketing isn't straight forward or clear to the consumer, especially with the Chinese signage. If the marketing/branding is a bit clearer, customers may come in with that context in mind. As for the food, some dishes were a bit strange tasting, such as the'Gai Lan' (Cantonese veggie in pic) - the price was high for a few icy cold pieces of Gai Lan drenched in soy sauce with a creamy seasme sauce on the side. I get it - the restaurant probably attempted to replicable how Japanese spinach salad (Gomae) is made using a Cantonese veggie, but the flavour was lacking & the price was quite high ($14). We also got the Tan Tan Udon - regardless of what the'take' is for this dish, the umami flavour was really lacking - it was spicy & had way too much sesame oil. Finally, we also got the Chicken Nanban, it was good but a bit salty. Overall, I think the restaurant has some uniqueness to it, but can work on their focus in terms of branding & flavours - keeping things a bit simpler, & preserving some traditional Japanese/Chinese aspects for certain dishes, & not overdoing it to create fusion.

Beautiful dishes

We tonight enjoyed the tasting menu at Fleurs & Cadeaux & it was a memorable experience.

The standout for us was the Japanese milk bread - truly the best we've ever had. It was incredibly soft, melted in the mouth, & featured a delightfully crispy layer on top.

The fried chicken was also excellent, accompanied perfectly by the black garlic sauce, which was the best sauce pairing for it.

The duck breast was amazing with a lovely charry flavor, but we found the daunted mushroom flavor profile a little off - too sour to complement the smokiness of the breast well.

We particularly loved the Toro special dish; its richness & buttery texture, combined with a subtle brininess of the sea, made it exceptional. Even my friend, who's not usually a seafood fan, enjoyed it thoroughly.

For dessert, we tried both the annin dofu & the brownie, with the brownie absolutely standing out. The chocolate had an impressive density balanced perfectly with the sweetness of the caramel, & the cream on top was a lovely finishing touch.

The service was top notch throughout the evening. Every dish was presented beautifully, & the timing between courses was just right. The only suggestion we have is to consider expanding the tasting menu slightly-adding one or two more dishes or increasing the portion size of a couple of dishes, such as the fried chicken, would help round it out perfectly for 3 people.

Overall, an excellent dining experience with delicious food & attentive service. Highly recommended!

Speak-easy vibes with truly amazing dishes & great drinks. We had amazing service & tried all the recommendations. My favourite dishes were far & away the duck & the sashimi. The fried chicken was also a must-order. Highly recommend checking them out.

Fleurs & Cadeaux blows us away each time we visit. At this point, I'd be willing to plan a trip around coming for dinner. The food is exquisite, especially the creativity of the vegetable dishes. The fish melts in your mouth & the cocktails & wine are delicate & well-curated. The staff are always knowledgeable, thoughtful, & friendly. To top it all off, the ambiance is wonderful. We'll be back many a time!

It's a very cute restaurant with tasty food. My issue was that it took 2 hours to get through 4 dishes. If they were hot fired dishes maybe that would be ok, but 2 sashimi courses & a cold salad should not take that long to serve. If you like leisurely dining & aren't super hungry maybe this is a good place for you, but we were not satisfied. Especially after spending over $300 for 4 courses & a bottle of wine. The silver lining was our server. She was wonderful.

Cool restaurant with great interiors & a cool concept. However, when we walked in (with a reservation), no one greeted us, & there isn't much of a waiting area since the place is so small. It felt a bit awkward just standing by the door without any staff acknowledging us. The menu is on the smaller side, & my husband has some gut health issues, so he asked if a few dishes could be modified slightly. Unfortunately, the response was an immediate'no.' without offering any alternatives. The waiter wasn't rude, but that just created a weird vibe for us, so we left. It just didn't seem like the right spot for us. That said, others around us seemed to really enjoy their meals.

Wow! I am a relatively picky eater & even I can appreciate this is great food even if a lot of the flavours were out of my comfort zone. Super flavourful unique dishes. Expensive for the portion size but honestly that's what you pay at these kinds of restaurants. In my opinion, the flavour & quality of food is worth the $. Service is very attentive & you always feel taken care of. Ambiance is very nice with one of the waiters/managers being the DJ constantly providing the vibe 🤑🤑 Yummy would go back!!!

Absolutely incredible. The ambiance is fantastic. We loved sitting at the bar as it overlooks several food stations, so we got to watch some of our dishes being prepared. The food was absurdly delicious. Every dish that arrived became our new favourite. The stars of the show were the Chinese broccoli, the Tataki, & the miso duck, but honestly, everything was so delicious. Our waiter, who was also the bartender, was incredibly sweet & made the best cocktails. He even surprised us with a little candle on our dessert for our anniversary! So fantastic! We will be coming back to try the rest of the menu!

This place is such a GEM! We have been here 2x this month & all I can say is that both times we've left so deeply inspired by the dishes! Everything we had was just so thought out & composed that each plate feels like a symphony ❤️ If you order the duck, please order the tataki as well, these two are soulmates. Each one is amazing but together?✨MAGIC✨ A special shout out to out to our server because he made us feel so welcome. He was helpful & so patient with us, truly made the visit memorable Order anything there! We've tried a majority of the dishes & not a single one of them disappointed. You know it's good when you're already planning your next visit over dessert... which was exactly what we were doing while savouring the Miso Caramel Brownie

Superb quality, creative dishes, cool & inviting vibe, attentive & knowledgeable service (Kira rocks! Really knows her wine!🍷). Just wish the kitchens didn't close so early (1030ish) & climate control was a bit better (bursts of hot & cold air). But really fab hidden gem all around!!
