This Japanese restaurant rocks. It's run by a crew of young passionate people with a lot of energy to give. We sat at the bar & was greeted with a cool bartender named Thomas. He kept up with us all evening, topping off drinks & making sure everything was to our liking. We watched the cooked prep our food with laser focus all night. It was quite the experience. My girlfriend & I love it & would recommend it to anyone. I actually am giving 5 starts to this place because I cannot think of something I would have changed. Sure the place is small & a bit crammed, but that just adds an atmosphere of unique closeness.
Delicious food & flavours that really excite the pallet. Everything was delicious, the duck the beef the sushi the chicken the dessert the cocktails wow wow wow - music was too loud I could barely bear the person beside me & was giving a Latin / jazz vibe… would have loved more lounge or lower volume music - other wise great staff & food !! We will be back :)))
I can comfortably say that I ate the best Tuna Sashimi in my life, & I eat a lot of sushi. Everything was great. The only thing I would say is I sat at the bar & the stools were horrible. It was so uncomfortable I had to stand several times during the meal.
Disclaimer: This review is more of a 3.5/5 star than a 4, but I'm giving it a 4 because I would actually still come back just for the sushi.
Pros:
1. Sushi was terrific. Some of the best in the city. & that includes the rice as well, which was phenomenal.
2. The meats were also A1. Though, I hope they weren't cooked sous-vide (that method is being phased out because of microplastic contamination) but I have a suspicion they were. Owner, feel free to confirm. Either way, excellent.
Cons:
1. Seating at the bar (if you're lucky not be facing a literal wall) is uncomfortable for longer than an hour.
2. Plates came out at random. Meat, then sushi, then noodles, then meat, etc. Insulting to the sushi in my opinion.
3. This is one of those devious sharing-plate restaurants that lets you easily rack up a big bill with only a couple of drinks & a few sharing plates without really noticing the total until you get the bill. Caveat emptor. But either way this style of restaurant is fading away, people are tired of sharing & overpaying for small portions.
4. The steak, for example, is far too good to be served on its own without any accompaniment. It's seems really silly. It's a sneaky way to rack up another $30 charge just to get to taste a few slices of beef. But it was good.
5. Some dishes were not well balanced, like the paprika noodles. Extremely cloy in the mouth. The ice cream suffers the same problem: overpowered. It's as if whoever is tasting the food in the kitchen is a heavy smoker or drinker because those dishes were not balanced whatsoever.
6. Last but not least, Fleurs & Cadeaux is peak'Montreal service'. Cold & ironically unfriendly, as if they're doing you a grand favour by letting you in. Fake smiles that disappear the moment they turn away, & they won't bother asking if you liked your food or how the evening is going. Also, a restaurant of this caliber shouldn't let staff dress in tattered Value Village. Again, that classic'ironic' Montreal service that just makes me cringe. This isn't unique to Fleurs & Cadeaux, it's just endemic to this city.
In short, despite the lack of good service & comfort & some issues with some of the dishes, this place cares about quality especially when it comes to the sushi.
The best way to describe this place is'pretentious', from the staff to the cocktails & down to the meals. Menu is confusing at first sight but you get barely any help from the waitress - almost looking down on me for not being familiar with the meals. Cocktail was rancid. The'vegetable of the moment' was just a blanched piece of broccoli in cold water. Is that a joke? Having sesame sauce right next to it doesnt'elevate' the dish. Pretentious. 45$ for, more or less, a pokebowl wasnt worth it either. Udon spicy pork basically tasted like some sort of pistachio italian ragu - not japanese at all. But what do you expect from a japanese restaurant that doesnt employ any japanese cooks in the kitchen? The only thing this place is good for is an instagram picture. Super overrated.
Excellent establishment! Fun, a little quirky, & the food is top tier. They even gave us a free birthday shot to start. Other than the edamame dish that we felt was a little tasteless & my second order being forgotten & taking 30 minutes to arrive from our last dish, I would recommend this restaurant to those who are looking for a fun evening night out. Sit at the bar!
Food's great. The guy bartending when I went really knows his stuff.
Went for birthday dinner. Absolutely amazing nouveau Japanese! Started with a tamago each. It was spectacular start to meal! It was soft & the dashi was a delight. One slurp! Chirashi was perfect with substantial pieces of tuna, salmon, whitefish, scallops, real wasabi & yuzu. Soybeans appetizer was served with toasted pieces of milk bread, pickled okra. Fried chicken with a savory black garlic sauce was perfectly crispy. Had a glass of a delicious dry sake with heavy umami. So good! No disappointments except no t shirts in my size! Great friendly service. Unexpected contrast between frumpy exterior & cozy interior. Apparently there's a bar below called Sans Soleil.
Loved this & will be returning!
It took me too long to finally try this place... Cozy, hip, fun menu, the freshest fish. Get a seat at the bar & watch the prep show.
Had been wanting to come here for a while after hearing amazing reviews & decided to take visitors from out of town to try it. I read reviews online that a tasting menu was available but our server did not inform us of such thing.
I was surprised at how underwhelming the food was, especially for the price. The sashimi platter should have been the highlight, but was not. It was mediocore & there was barely any wasabi provided, given that sashimi is traditionally eaten with wasabi. The udon noodles were also just noodles that tasted like they were covered in tahini. The best part was the duck, which even then, was super chewy despite being thinly cut.
Unfortunately, I don't think I'd return but the ambiance was spectacular. Meat /Seafood forward menu. Reservations are required.
one of my favourite restaurants in Montreal - nice food, little hidden spot, cool staff & a cool bar downstairs - i recommend it to everyone:)
Great food, must love fish ! Seating is mostly around the bar where they prepare food. Pricing is affordable. Great wine list & great ambiance. You have to male réservations in advance its quite popular.
A unique dining experience! The building has a charming vintage feel, & part of the kitchen is right in the middle of the restaurant, giving it an energetic, interactive vibe. We sat at the bar & loved watching the action unfold. We ordered the chicken nanban, the temaki sushi, & the aged miso duck dish. All were delicious, but the chicken was definitely the standout for me. The bathroom layout is a bit awkward, but it's a minor detail. Overall, I'd definitely come back again!
