My 🎂birthday was last Thursday, June 🌟5th. The weather was beautiful, a great day to enjoy the wonderfully funky garden at Café Santropol.
Of course, I had to tell our waiter that it was my 🎉 birthday! The ambiance is so friendly & festive (freylech).
Santropol has been open for approximately 50 years & I have been a customer for almost that long. I enjoyed the walk down memory lane.
The original founder of the restaurant still owns it, which is very cool.
For the first time ever, I did not order a cream cheese based sandwich (which I really like). Instead, I opted for
the tofu sandwich with marinated red pepper- delicious! My honey enjoyed the chicken salad.
My side salad & his full salad showcased a variety of vegetables & a tasty dressing.
The Birthday Cake (bread pudding) was a terrific surprise!!!!!
The wait staff were efficient, friendly, adorable & helpful.
We struck up a conversation with a nearby diner, a lovely samba dancer- & will try at attend upcoming performances!
Who knows? I may make lunch at Café Santropol a yearly birthday tradition!
However, I will surely be back before next June…
Someone at a nearby table had ordered a milkshake topped with whipped cream- it really looked tempting.😊

Accueil chaleureux, service attentionné, menu de salades, soupes, sandwiches. Délicieux chaï glacé. Impossible de résister au pain maison & aux biscuits. Magnifique terrasse.

Le Café Santropol est une véritable oasis urbaine. Son jardin verdoyant & foisonnant d'objets anciens & d'oeuvres éclectiques en fait un lieu unique où l'on peut se détendre, s'émerveiller… & bien manger ! Les portions sont généreuses, surtout les sandwichs - tellement copieux qu'ils se partagent facilement à deux, ce qui en fait une option parfaite pour les familles avec enfants. Ces derniers y trouvent d'ailleurs un équilibre rare : la stimulation douce de l'exploration du jardin combinée à une atmosphère calme.
C'est aussi mon arrêt préféré après une randonnée au Mont-Royal. Rien de tel qu'une pause relaxante dans ce décor bohème pour savourer l'effort.
💬 Petit bémol : l'endroit gagnerait à être un peu mieux entretenu. Certaines tables sont collantes (le vernis s'effrite), la peinture est défraîchie, & les toilettes auraient besoin d'un rafraîchissement. Cela dit, ces détails n'enlèvent rien au charme général du lieu - un café hors du temps qui vaut le détour.
Really enjoyed the food & coffee! Cute spot & huge sandwich. Would go back for sure :) I tried the triple saint urban sandwich with chicken! The sweet & savoury combination was absolutely amazing!!!!
The place is beautiful & very cozy. The service was good, & all the soups I tried were delicious & definitely worth the price. I also tried a sandwich that I didn't enjoy as much, but overall, it was a great experience. I would recommend this place to others.
Don't be fooled by the pictures online, the sandwiches are huge! The food & drinks were delicious & the staff were friendly & polite. It did take awhile before they took our order, but we arrived right as they opened & we had a large group, so I think they were still trying to finish setting up before getting hit with our multiple orders. Wish we could've sat in the patio area, but it was a bit too chilly on the day we went, but we will return again because the back area looked beautiful.
J'ai vraiment adoré ce café. Le petit jardin à l'arrière est magnifique. Le sandwich au poulet & le gâteau au fromage étaient délicieux !! Je recommande cet endroit si tu veux un endroit relax avec des options santé pour manger. L'attention est agréable.
I grew up eating here, I look love the place, if they had not stopped making the beure de minuit sandwich I would go more often, it's my favorite sandwich ever.
this cafe is the definition of going over to a cozy friends house for lunch! the backyard is STUNNING & a must if you're visiting during the summer time (perf plateau vibes)! My favourite sandwich is the duluth but all their food is delicious! Their bread is pillowy soft & all the flavours in their sandwich blends together harmoniously. Portions are also great for their price! I'm also a big fan of their baked goods like scones & carrot cake. This place is a go-to place to bring any friends visiting town!

Entrer au Santropol, c'est comme plonger dans un rêve fiévreux où les sandwichs sont trop grands pour l'humanité & où le pain moelleux murmure des secrets interdits. Chaque bouchée est une épopée gustative, chaque garniture un miracle.
J'ai commandé un sandwich, j'ai reçu une cathédrale comestible. J'ai tenté de le manger dignement, il m'a regardé avec mépris avant de m'engloutir moi.
Endroit sympathique, service chaleureux, la nourriture est très bonne, je recommande! J'ai bien aimé mon sandwich Duluth. Il y a de la musique pas trop forte donc on s'entend bien parler. Sortie parfaite entre amis ou en amoureux ! J'y retournerais !
Food was spot on & atmosphere was on point. The service just wasn't. Not having been here before I had no clue what to do upon arriving. When my friend asked for a table of two, the girl at the front replied "Are you first in line?" Excuse me? How am I supposed to know that you have to wait in a line? That's not common for a restaurant, normally names are taken. & why am I track if I'm first in line? So we had to ask everyone where they were in the lineup. So strange...... The waitress never followed up after we received our meal. Only took our order & took our plates away. We're supposed to tip for that? These sandwiches are huge & they are messy, I had to use one single napkin the entire time because the waitress did not follow up. Honestly, probably won't come back.
If you find yourself in Montreal, make sure to pop into Café Santropol-it's an absolute treasure! From the moment you walk through the door, the friendly staff greet you like an old friend, making you feel right at home. Their warmth & attentiveness truly elevate your dining experience! I indulged in the Duluth Sandwich, packed with caramelized onions, cheddar, & sweet pears-it was a flavor party in my mouth! & don't even get me started on the Gâteau au chocolat trois étages; it's a rich, chocolatey delight that's simply irresistible. The charming outdoor terrace is perfect for soaking up the sun while enjoying your meal. Just a fun heads-up: tipping is mandatory here, but trust me, those amazing staff members absolutely deserve it for their stellar service! In short, Café Santropol is a cozy gem that combines fantastic food with top-notch hospitality. You'll definitely want to come back for more!

Worth the wait! Primarily vegetarian &/or vegan menu, with options to add meat & dairy to some dishes. Huge sandwiches on fresh pillowy bread & hearty soups (ask about the soup of the day!) Charming & cozy atmosphere with expansive & secluded patio & curated decor. Will be back next time I'm in Montreal!
The place looks cozy, there is a colorful backyard with cute little elements put together, nothing authentic but still cute. We had 2 sandwiches, Olympic 76, & triplex something, really bad Sadwiches, & I mean BAD (tastes bad, too much runny sauce, everything falls off the sandwich, & worst of all just one type of stale bread for all) & quite expensive for the portion & quality. Service was ok, but remember you are not allowed to use your laptop in the Terrrase area, because the owner has said so! I asked one of the waiters & she said people using laptops tend to stay longer which makes sense but why not saying you can't stay more than 60 min or whatever instead of saying you are not allowed to open your laptop here? That doesn't seem reasonable or friendly specially for a casual coffeshop. But later the waiter found us a table inside with cable which was nice. We also tried the classic cheese cake, too sweet & average. Overal won't be going back & mainly because of food.
Fabulous sandwiches & soups The Triplex is a great combination of tastes... Only blah thing.... No coordination with kitchen../ Got the Sandwich before the soup....-& ordered 2 coffee's & dessert .... We finished dessert almost before getting the coffee Not your common resto ettiquette Staff was amazing & so on, just needs little tweeks... But an outstanding place to come & enjoy 12 months a year , always fresh & healthy combo's..
The sandwiches at santropol never miss ! Ile des piments is my go to & probably their best to me, I tried their spiced apple juice also which is just perfect to start up fall 🍎 love the way everything looks & the kinda eclectic decor the servers are also very nice
I was really excited to try this place but in the end, I was pretty disappointed. The menu isn't clear about what's vegan or not. They didn't have the macncheese nor tempeh or avocado so we basically ordered 3 items & they came 10 or 15 min later to tell us that they were actually out of 2 out of 3 things we ordered... I did like the chaucer sandwich, bread was super fresh. Vegan cheesecake was also delicious. I wouldn't go back tho.
