If there is one café that has truly captured the cultural zeitgeist of Montreal's Mile End recently, it is undoubtedly Café Alphabet. From the moment you walk through the doors on Rue Clark, it becomes immediately clear why this spot has generated such an undeniable, city-wide buzz.
An Unbeatable, Lively Vibe
The atmosphere here is electric. It manages to strike that rare balance between a bustling, highly sought-after destination & a warm, welcoming neighborhood hub. The space is chic, modern, & highly aesthetic, yet the genuine hospitality of the team makes you feel right at home. It is a space where community & culture converge effortlessly.
The Best Coffee & The Famous Matcha
Café Alphabet takes its beverage program exceptionally seriously. Roasting their own specialty beans, the coffee here easily ranks among the absolute best in Montreal. Their signature Freddo Cappuccino-a brilliant nod to the owners' Greek roots-is an absolute must-try, featuring a rich double espresso topped with their famous, velvety cold foam.
However, the true showstopper is their Matcha. Whether you opt for a classic iced matcha latte or their signature Matcha Freddo, the quality is unparalleled. The matcha is earthy, vibrant, beautifully balanced, & completely lacks the powdery bitterness you find at lesser cafes. It is, without a doubt, a benchmark for how matcha should be prepared.
Exceptional Pastries & Snacks
To complement the stellar beverage menu, Alphabet offers a highly curated selection of snacks & baked goods. While the café draws heavily on its Greek inspiration rather than Italian, the food is nothing short of spectacular. From wonderfully flaky, buttery pastries to fresh, satisfying bites, the snacks are the perfect accompaniment to a morning coffee or a mid-afternoon matcha pick-me-up.
Verdict
Café Alphabet isn't just riding a wave of hype; it is setting a new standard for what a modern community coffee shop can be. With its unparalleled vibe, top-tier specialty coffee, & the best matcha in the city, it is a mandatory stop for anyone spending time in the Mile End.

Alphabet Café is one of those places you stumble upon & instantly want to tell everyone about. Located on a cozy corner in Montreal, their iconic freddo coffee & matcha freddo coffee are truly worth the hype, with that silky foam & the unique flavor that has everyone talking. I also tried one of their other specialty coffees & it was absolutely delicious.
The vibe inside is calm, welcoming, & perfect for sitting down to enjoy something sweet. Their desserts are amazing - especially the carrot cake, which is moist, flavorful, & easily one of the best I've had in a while.
One of the things I loved most is that Alphabet Café isn't just a place to grab a drink; it's an experience. You can try different coffee varieties, & they also sell coffee beans, T-shirts, & other merch.
Overall, a must-visit spot if you're in the area & want great coffee & great vibes.

🥰 Cafe Alphabet will forever hold a special place in my heart. 🥰

We are leaving Montréal tomorrow & before we go I just wanted to say thank you again on behalf of my dad & myself for the beautiful experience we had this afternoon at Café Alphabet. This café will not only hold a special place in my heart but I truly believe it deserves global recognition. It is the kind of place that should be a designated stop for anyone visiting Montréal, the kind of café you circle on the map & make sure you never miss. Café Alphabet is so special that it feels worthy of being included in the Michelin Guide.

It was such a joy to meet you Steve & to share a kind & genuine conversation. You welcomed us with so much warmth & gratitude & it meant so much. You are not only the heart of this café but also such a wonderful father figure. I can see how proud you are of your sons & how much pride you take in Café Alphabet. That love & devotion shines through in every detail. Café Alphabet is a multigenerational family business with history, tradition, & care, & you can feel that legacy the moment you walk in.

I know I left a review on my other account already but you have no idea how much I miss Café Alphabet even now only a few hours later. I am already craving another freddo & I know that back home in Toronto it will never be the same. I have told my family & friends all about this café & I promise that whenever I have the opportunity to return to Montréal I will come back here & order even more drinks from the menu. This café has truly become one of my favourite cafés of all time. It is so much better than going to chain coffee houses. I honestly dislike chains & I would much rather support small businesses like this one because they have heart, soul, & history that no chain can ever replace.

The drinks here are outstanding, especially the matcha freddo. I would give it a full 10 out of 10. It was creamy, smooth, & refreshing, with that perfect balance of richness & lightness. The matcha itself tasted earthy & high quality, not bitter at all, but instead mellow & deep in flavor. The cold creamy foam on top made it feel indulgent, almost like sipping a cloud. I may not know exactly what a traditional freddo is supposed to taste like, but I know this one was exceptional. As someone who drinks matcha every day, I can confidently say this is one of the best matcha drinks I have ever had.

Another thing that makes Café Alphabet stand out is how affordable it is compared to many other cafés. I paid $6.50 plus Quebec tax, which came out to about $7.50, for my matcha freddo. For a drink of this quality, that is incredibly fair. In Toronto you often pay the same or even more for something mediocre with service that feels rushed or impersonal. At Café Alphabet, every detail is done with care, & the hospitality is sincere. This was the best service we experienced during our entire stay in Montréal, even compared to our hotel. Thank you as well to the male & female baristas who were working this afternoon. You were both so kind & professional. Everyone here is talented, welcoming, & carries a stylish charm that makes the café feel even more special.

If there were any way to nominate Café Alphabet for the Michelin Star guide I would do it without hesitation. This café is so deserving. It is authentic, heartfelt, & one of the best cafés I have ever been to.

Steve, thank you again for your kindness. You & your family have built something extraordinary & you should be so proud. May God bless you & your family with continued success, recognition, & joy. Montréal is lucky to have Café Alphabet & I cannot wait until the day I return. ❤?☕?🍵🥹

Tony, the owner, is a certified beauty. Friendly, personable, & answered all of our questions. My wife & I got the Freddo iced chai & the banana matcha iced latte with cold foam. So good! Hope he gets to visit Calgary more one day!

I came into café alphabet expecting to experience one of the best's coffee shops in Montreal. I was a little disappointed, sadly.

We ordered two matcha lattes with oat milk & one hot Freddo coffee as well as two biscotti, one almond cookie & one salt chocolate chip cookie.

I didn't enjoy the matcha lattes. As soon as I tasted the matcha I knew it was camellia sinensis. Then I turned around & guess what they were selling… camellia sinensis matcha. I feel like it tasted cheap & powdery or dry. It wasn't creamy. I would recommend for them to try the matcha from Monsieur thé or @Matcha for a richer matcha menu. The camellia one is very underwhelming in my opinion. Both drinks weren't really hot , they were leaning more towards ambient temperature/cold which surprised me since I saw them doing it in front of me.

The Freddo coffee (which they are famous for) was alright. The grains they use have an actually enjoyable & distinct taste. The coffee was good & the taste was particular to them. Sadly I didn't feel like the foam was foamy enough, the minute I started sipping it disintegrated, & it didn't really add to the overall taste of the coffee. It felt like a normal latte. I honestly would like to try their latte & see if I could taste the difference between the two.

The cookies were alright. I didn't enjoy the chocolate chip & salt one, I felt like the chocolate chips they used weren't dark enough so the salt overpowered the cookie & it ended up tasting like a butter & salt cookie instead. The almond cookie & the biscotti were good.

The music was a bit loud & the coffee shop was pretty packed even tho we came in the afternoon. It didn't feel like a comfortable ambiance. Not really a place to relax or have a calm conversation after a walk. It felt like a New York coffee shop.

The service was pretty good, the guys were smiling & explaining the menu to us even though there was people waiting in line, which I appreciated.

Overall I wasn't surprised & I don't think this is a coffee shop for everyone.

The matcha freddo hype is real! This place was packed, but still manageable to get a drink within 5 min. The matcha was slightly watery - def need more matcha powder for a stronger drink, but the foam, oh my! Lavender flavoured foam is spectacular! Definitely need more - franchise out to Toronto PLEASEEEEE

You want to know why it's trending right

It's safe to say Alphabet Cafe gives the best coffee experience I have seen in Canada. This cafe is great for all types of people & ages.

Whether you like your coffee on the go or dine in you'll enjoy it if you order right…

The owners & staff are super friendly & helpful. Don't hesitate to ask them questions about the menu they're very cool & chill.

I usually get a Freddo Zesto or
✨chocolat chaud ✨plus the Foam on top. sometimes both lol. Also I enjoy it more without a straw or a flat lid. The hot drink cold foam combination is fire.

The cafe is great for journaling, networking, people watching, working, & overall enjoying a great drink.

The interior design of the cafe is gorgeous honestly. It's the little things you see everywhere you just have to pay attention. For example the frame around the tv *chefs kiss*

The owners are smart business men with genuine passion for their craft & you can see it reflected in their cafe.

The great ambiance, the engaging staff, the rewarding drink its all a 10/10 experience.

A Coffee Worth Every Sip! This coffee is nothing short of perfection. From the very first sip, the balance of flavors is remarkable-smooth, rich, & just the right amount of boldness. What truly sets it apart, however, is its craftsmanship. The foam art on top isn't just visually stunning; it actually lasts until the very end, thanks to the impeccably curated blend & texture. It's a testament to the skill & attention to detail that goes into every cup here. If you're looking for a coffee that not only tastes exceptional but also feels like a true work of art, this is it. Highly recommended!

I have to be honest that the freddo matcha & freddo cappuccino are both overrated & not worth it. Even if the proceeds are meant to go for good cause, the fundraising product should still be something enjoyable. For me personally, it was just half glass of foam & then half glass of ice with very little drinkable content. Their other products seem ok so I'll leave it for others to find out. Service was great btw.

TikTok trendy, this $8.05 matcha actually felt like drinking cardboard after the first satisfying sip. Maybe the coffees are better but this matcha was not it, I actually feel thirstier after every sip with the amount of foam they put for aesthetics. Indoor, outdoor seating, good vibes just bad drink

Vibes are good outside in the sun & the viral matcha freddo with the foam is good, especially the foam, but quite sweet, so maybe ask for less sweet if you don't like your drinks too sweet. But we waited for it for like a good 20-30 minutes... wouldn't do that again... there's enough other good coffee shops in mtl IMO... ya sure you don't get a little foam pour show by a hot barista everywhere but like... 🤷🏼‍♀️

I've been a few times & it's always been popular but ever since they went viral on TikTok it's even busier!! I would avoid weekends bc of that! Decent coffee, cute spot with outdoor seating. I finally tried their freddos (the milk foam), I got the matcha & my friend had the coffee version. They definitely know what they're doing & I love how they give a lil show & make sure you have time to capture them capping the drink with the milk foam! When I had my first sip, it was overwhelmingly sweet but it did balance out after I mixed the entire drink. & then it was overly cream-tasting (which i kinda expected) but I don't recommend if you're lactose intolerant like I am. Still worth checking out if you're in the city!

Cute spot for coffee stop very popular & crowded. Probably the nicest & most welcoming owner I've encountered:) matcha latte was on point with the creamy milky foam soft & light as cloud .

Had both amour coffee & matcha & it ended up just being watery drinks with a hint of flavour of strawberry from the foam. Both disappointed when paying 15$ for 2 drinks. The coffee amour was acidic & watery which didn't go well with the strawberry foam. I get that they used a shaker to add texture but it just ended up being a watery americano on ice with foam. The matcha amour was just water & matcha with foam ( taste like watery bitter vegetable with a hint of strawberry). the matcha seemed also shaken which ended up being watery matcha on ice with foam just like the coffee version.
