Visited from Vancouver last summer; still dreaming about my coffee from Cafe Alphabet. The ambiance, the charm, this cafe is so worth a visit. Also highly recommend their baked goods especially the carrot cake.

I went to Cafe Alphabet on a chilly spring Friday afternoon with my foodie friend Farzy… one of those in-between days where winter hasn't fully let go, but you're craving outdoor time anyway.

It was my first time there, & it felt weirdly familiar… probably because I've seen soo many viral TikToks of their freddo matchas being made by Montreal's favorite barista Tom.

We both ordered the classic freddo matcha… which just felt right. Cold drink, heated terrace… perfect balance.

Now I will say… if you're not a matcha lover, this might not be for you. It actually tastes like matcha. But if you are, it's really good. Smooth, refreshing, easy to drink… nothing complicated, just done well.

One thing I really appreciated is that they're currently donating $1 from every freddo matcha to the make-a-wish Canada. It's a small detail, but it says a lot. Not just aesthetic… actually community-oriented.

Café Alphabet is connected to Ambros Coffee so everything is roasted locally with a real focus on quality. But what stood out to me even more is the story… it traces back to a Greek family legacy in Mile End going all the way back to the 70s. You can feel that quiet pride in the space. It doesn't try too hard… it just exists with intention.

Very chill vibe. Great playlist. Sweet staff.

I'd come back for another slow moment like this… maybe next time with a book I'll pretend to read but actually just people-watch.

I'm just a foodie who loves exploring my city & sharing my experiences. If you enjoy discovering places like this, come hang out with me on TikTok @foxy.appetite & IG @foxyappetite 🫶

This rainy spring morning felt made for a café visit - soft rain, mild weather, the kind of Montréal morning that invites you to slow down a little. The croissant here was unbelievably good, & you can tell they put real care into their coffee. Everything tasted rich & thoughtfully made.

The café itself is bright & spotless, & the staff are genuinely warm & welcoming. I especially loved the counter area - so many charming little details, playful & beautifully arranged. It was my first time here, but it was easy to fall in love with the place right away. Their matcha is excellent, too.

On a rainy morning like this, a deep, velvety cup of coffee somehow makes everything feel lighter & brighter.

Cozy, warm café in a quaint neighbourhood with a relaxing vibe & super friendly staff. The coffee is made from rich beans, & their Americano is easily one of the best-bold, smooth, & satisfying. A great start to my morning….

Went early morning (9am ish) on a sunny Saturday, no wait time, & still lots of seating available inside & outside. I tried the freddo cap, half sweet. It was good, but too sweet for my taste, especially as a first coffee of the day. I'd like to come back to try the freddo matcha. I also had the salty babka (pesto, feta & sun dried tomatoes) & loved it!

This is an Instagram cafe. On its wall hangs a Gazette article depicting its pink matcha that'went viral.' The glossiness of it is in deep contrast to how the owners respond to critical reviews here. Crude. If you visit it alone, you will be shoved to the back area. If you think of leaving due to the lack of any unoccupied table, you may be approached by someone asking you to stay in an ambiguously friendly/pushy manner.'You can just stand at this table.' & later, when not one, but several tables/seats become available, & you decide to just take up a small space to finish your food, you'll be promptly asked to leave - back to eating at your sad, uncomfortable standing corner. I understand the priority policy, but when you're in the middle of eating, & there are a few empty spots? What kind of service is this? Then you look around, it dawns on you that young, hip people front the front area. The coffee & pastries are decent, but nothing spectacular about them. Pro tip: take out your phone & start documenting your visit, pretend to be an influencer, you may just receive a much better service - especially if you're a young, yt woman. This is an Instagram cafe. It subsists on vibes.

Good coffee ☕ & nice sweets to get. However you gotta be lucky to get a place to seat... 🙈

We got a strawberry matcha & a Freddo cap & they were the best matcha/coffee we've had in Montreal. The service was amazing, the gentleman taking our order was very friendly & helpful & it made our experience all the better. We can't wait to come back again & try more of the menu. 10/10 recommend this cafe!

Neighbourhood gem! Great coffee & lovely service. Clearly a favourite with locals who also bring their four legged friends as a bonus. Tried the blueberry maple latte - surprisingly delicious & not too sweet.

If there is one café that has truly captured the cultural zeitgeist of Montreal's Mile End recently, it is undoubtedly Café Alphabet. From the moment you walk through the doors on Rue Clark, it becomes immediately clear why this spot has generated such an undeniable, city-wide buzz.
An Unbeatable, Lively Vibe
The atmosphere here is electric. It manages to strike that rare balance between a bustling, highly sought-after destination & a warm, welcoming neighborhood hub. The space is chic, modern, & highly aesthetic, yet the genuine hospitality of the team makes you feel right at home. It is a space where community & culture converge effortlessly.
The Best Coffee & The Famous Matcha
Café Alphabet takes its beverage program exceptionally seriously. Roasting their own specialty beans, the coffee here easily ranks among the absolute best in Montreal. Their signature Freddo Cappuccino-a brilliant nod to the owners' Greek roots-is an absolute must-try, featuring a rich double espresso topped with their famous, velvety cold foam.
However, the true showstopper is their Matcha. Whether you opt for a classic iced matcha latte or their signature Matcha Freddo, the quality is unparalleled. The matcha is earthy, vibrant, beautifully balanced, & completely lacks the powdery bitterness you find at lesser cafes. It is, without a doubt, a benchmark for how matcha should be prepared.
Exceptional Pastries & Snacks
To complement the stellar beverage menu, Alphabet offers a highly curated selection of snacks & baked goods. While the café draws heavily on its Greek inspiration rather than Italian, the food is nothing short of spectacular. From wonderfully flaky, buttery pastries to fresh, satisfying bites, the snacks are the perfect accompaniment to a morning coffee or a mid-afternoon matcha pick-me-up.
Verdict
Café Alphabet isn't just riding a wave of hype; it is setting a new standard for what a modern community coffee shop can be. With its unparalleled vibe, top-tier specialty coffee, & the best matcha in the city, it is a mandatory stop for anyone spending time in the Mile End.

We went to this coffee shop last week, & truly loved it! Tony (one of the owners) was very kind to help us pick some of their coffee beans they sell as they roast their own beans (Ambros Coffee Co). Looking forward to go back & try more of their in house specialty coffees & matcha & some more beans. The atmosphere is lovely & the staff are all very knowledgeable & welcoming. Highly recommend if you are in Montreal

Coffee is really great here & the staff are always kind & welcoming.

However as someone who lives in the neighbourhood & up the street I am so frustrated that this business doesn't seem to respect their neighbours or care enough to keep the crowds within their property lines. People spill out into the streets & block the sidewalk & bike path at almost all hours of the day. I've noticed that other popular businesses in the area will have signs to remind customers to stay within particular limits to respect the neighbourhood but Alphabet, at least as of yet, has not done anything like that. I, & I'm sure other people in the neighbourhood, would be so grateful to see some effort to keep patrons in the business & not blocking the road, side walk & bike path, so that we can live more harmoniously with this cafe as a community.

Edit - I see you've updated your reply - that sign is literally barely noticeable, tiny & jammed into a corner that no one is going to see unless they are really looking for it. If you want myself & others to respect this business then make legitimate attempts to respect us! A tiny sign is not a peace offering. I've been reading reviews & see the very negative & dismissive way you respond to constructive criticisms & real concerns. It's very disappointing & does not give credence that you actually care about my review. We BOTH have to earn respect. I updated my review because this business has done nothing to reflect on it genuinely & take it seriously.

Five stars all around. The coffee was excellent, & I had a plain croissant that was wonderfully flaky & buttery. Coffee is served in very chic cups, making the experience even more enjoyable.
