Review Summary

Across reviews, Bombay Mahal is seen as a go to for flavorful Indian cuisine with consistently tasty dishes such as butter chicken and lamb korma, plus standout naan and samosas, and many diners call it a reliable favorite in Montreal for value and technique. The ambiance is described as modest or ordinary, sometimes with no music, and the dining room is not the focus while the kitchen shines; flavors are generally balanced and rich, though a few visits report issues like dry tandoori chicken, a watery curry, or overly salty sides that miss the mark. Service is frequently praised for friendliness and hospitality, with staff going the extra mile and occasionally offering complimentary portions, while other visits note slower or less polished service. Takeout is popular for convenience, and most reviewers agree the food quality, portions, and value make Bombay Mahal worth returning to, even if an off day can occur.

Bombay Mahal offers a nice lunchtime menu at this restaurant, it is reasonable with good variety & it's tasty. I had the butter chicken thali & my friend had the lamb thali. These platters are wonderfully savory & the naan bread was great!

Stomach ache & diarrhea every time my friends & I eat here. Multiple people, different dishes, same problem. The food tastes great & affordable but the aftermath is not pretty.

Ordered: butter chicken, aloo gobi, naan & rice

Went to Bombay Mahal today for New Year dinner with my wife, & unfortunately, the experience was far below expectations.

I'm Tamil & grew up eating authentic Indian food, so I know what proper flavours, balance, & preparation should taste like. That's why this was especially disappointing.

I ordered the butter chicken thali, & my wife had the lamb thali. Both dishes missed the mark badly. The tandoori chicken pieces were dry & overcooked, the salad lettuce was soggy with no freshness, & the aloo bean side was excessively salty. My butter chicken was watery & lacking depth, while my wife's lamb was salty & not spicy at all, which makes no sense for a lamb curry.

This restaurant used to be excellent, which is why we chose it for New Year. In the past, the food was amazing even if the service wasn't great. Today it was the opposite.. the service was good, but the food quality & execution were very poor. I've came here multiple times in the past within last 15 years.

Really hope this was just an off day, but for a place with such a strong reputation, this was a big miss.

We ordered some dine out via UberEats. Not the best Indian food. Chicken Tikka masala was more like Butter Chicken! Chicken Korma was okay too.

The food is absolutely incredible, it's tasty & flavorful. I went a couple time for the butter chicken on the lunch menu. The sauce is buttery, not too overpowering & the chicken is tender. The naan is out of this world & so are the samosas. However, I would say the service could be better, we had to go get our server multiple times to order (appetizers, mains, refills) & it always felt like we were bothering her. The food is so good tho I could not give less than 5 stars!

Bombay Mahal on Jean-Talon never disappoints! We ordered as take-out butter chicken, shrimp korma, naan & chaat papri. The chaat papri looked more like pain puri but was just as good. The naan wasn't puffy but rather condensed like a roti.

We ordered take out from there, the sauce for both the butter chicken & the lamb korma were very liquid & not creamy as expected, but still good, the lamb korma was really better than the butter chicken

This is hands DOWN the best Indian I've had. Butter chicken & lamb korma are to die for. Flavors are always there, sauce has perfect consistency, naan bread is always fresh. I honestly don't understand any of these bad reviews; I've been ordering there at least twice a month for the past year & I've never had a bad experience.

The portion sizes are so small. You are paying $17 for 5 spoons of butter chicken.

I got an uber eats order of butter chicken, extremely spicy & the sauce too watery. Looks like defrosted & lost all the good taste .

Killer Butter Chicken!!!! We tried the lamb curry also & it was fantastic. They don't provide rice or naan with the meal so keep that in mind when ordering. We didn't know but had rice at home so made some basmati there. We did order garlic naan to eat with & one was enough for the portion of curry. Seriously though... the butter chicken we think the best we've ever had... wish the portion was a little more but that's us drooling & wanting left overs! Take out was fast, we ordered online & it was ready before the online portal said.

I asked for spicy butter chicken but it might've been the creamiest, mildest butter chicken I've ever had. It tasted yummy but lacked complexity or intensity.

Haven't had food from here in a while. It was disappointing take out. Only 3 cubes of paneer in two orders. Butter chicken was very runny. Shrimp jalfriezi & Channa masala was good.

Last night 3 friends & I went to have dinner here. My friends have been going to this place for years & love it, I on the other hand only had Indian food once, 20 years ago & didn't enjoy it, however as of last night, I can now say that I love Indian food. We had the samosas, rice, butter chicken, lamb jalfraisi, chicken dhan saak, aloo gobi & naan bread...every dish was tasty & very flavourful, super yummy! My only complaint is that it was a little too spicy for me but I still managed to eat & enjoy everything. Service was just a little slow but ok. I will definitely go back :)

THE BEST Indian restaurant in Montreal !!!
The food is to die for !!!
We took the naan bread, the baghan barta ( delicious) the butter chicken, the samosas, & the spicy lamb... WOW..WOW..WOW...
My & my girlfriends go there at least once every 2 months & we enjoy ourselves every time.....
The staff is friendly...but the place is BUSY..so if you don't reserve expect to wait 30-45 minutes if you're a big group..you can also bring your own wine or beer .
Enjoy !
