However, they don't serve espresso-based drinks like Americanos. When I ordered one, they offered an alternative but ended up giving me an iced espresso in a very small cardboard cup. I'm not sure if this was due to the menu or a language barrier. It was also quite loud inside, which made it less enjoyable to sit & have a drink & a chat.
In the heart of downtown Montreal, there are plenty of places to grab a quick caffeine fix, but there is only one Bar Caffettiera. This iconic spot doesn't just serve food & drinks; it serves a masterclass in authentic Italian hospitality & style.
Walking into Caffettiera is like stepping through a portal directly into a bustling Rome or Milan café in the mid-1990s. The vibe is absolutely insane-in the best way possible. From the retro, colorful Memphis-group-inspired decor to the energetic buzz of conversation, the atmosphere is incredibly vibrant & effortlessly cool. They have perfectly captured the Italian sprezzatura (studied carelessness). Whether you are standing al banco (at the bar) to knock back a quick espresso or lingering at a table, you feel like you are part of an exclusive yet entirely welcoming club.
While the aesthetic is a massive draw, the coffee is what cements Caffettiera's legendary status. The coffee here is superb, adhering strictly to proper Italian traditions. Expect rich, perfectly extracted espressos with a thick, beautiful crema, & cappuccinos poured with exact ratios-no oversized, diluted drinks here. It is strong, smooth, & served at the perfect temperature to be enjoyed immediately.
Beyond the coffee, the authentic Italian snacks, sandwiches, & pastries (especially the cornetti) round out the experience flawlessly. It is the perfect spot for a quick morning start or a mid-afternoon pick-me-up that transitions smoothly into their famous aperitivo hour.
Bar Caffettiera is an absolute Montreal institution. It offers an uncompromising, joyful celebration of Italian cafe culture right in the middle of the city. For anyone who appreciates superb coffee served with an unforgettable, lively atmosphere, this is a non-negotiable must-visit.
Silly establishment that won't permit you to drink coffee the way you prefer it.
I love this little gem. It has hilarious rules posted to the wall & has are Italian gone rogue vibe. It's may favourite stop downtown to grab a flat white without alone milk!! ;) I do wish they had coconut milk though rather than oat milk which is basically like drinking pasta water.
I asked for a nice strong drink that they can recommend they recommended the Piccolo will be ordering again!
Also looking forward to trying the espresso martini & sandwiches!
Nice retro atmosphere with traditional italian coffee
Atmosphere, coffees, drinks 😉sandwiches, desserts, of Italian origin, patrons, best of all, the staff.
Viva La Caffettiera! Best spot for espresso-based drinks & Italian pastries in downtown Montreal.
I love coming here to sit down with a drink to just really ease my mind. Amazing atmosphere & amazing service. If you are new to Montreal, or if you just haven't gone out to explore your city much, I highly recommend
This was the sweetest, brightest little café! We came back two days in a row, & probably would have come back every day if we were in Montréal longer. The guy behind the counter was very welcoming (especially as an English speaker in a French-speaking city) & the staff efficient. My husband & I both got the marocchino to drink both days, & got pistachio & cherry pastries - cornettos & doughnut. Everything we got was incredible! We'll absolutely be back the next time we're in Montréal!
The coffee here is amazing! Had to go back two times because I wanted to try everything. Not an overly traditional little coffee shop, it has a fun retro vibe inside & they serve both coffee & cocktails. We tried the regular cafe latte, their version of iced coffee, & the nutella latte. All the drinks were amazing, but I highly recommend their iced latte, which is essentially in the form of a slushy. Highly recommend going in & having a coffee, it was my favorite coffee shop in Montreal during my visit.
It's really funny way that they call Americano non-Americano. Next time when I have time, I will sit down & drink espresso & water separately.
Amazing coffee, pastries & good service! They had milk options & prices around $4-5.50 per drink. A few sit down tables but it was very busy. I liked that it was a local cafe & it looked like the owners were interested in genuinely serving their customers :) Just be aware: THERE IS NO DECAF!
The drinks are good, but not a good spot to get food. Atmosphere is nice & they set up the cafe well. Although, the cafe can have a really strong chemical smell due to the nail salon right beside.
had about 4 or 5 drinks here. the first one was really good, then the rest didn't match up with the quality... It was more like a 5-star cortado then a bunch of 3-star average cortado & lattes etc... again they sometimes make the steamed milk too hot.
was very disappointed with my experience here. I'm not a big coffee person & unfortunately they did not serve any drinks without it. it seems they take their coffee pretty seriously so for any coffee fans this might be the right place to go to. the sandwich i got was pretty bad so needless to say i did not enjoy my meal. also i don't understand why but they had a sign on every table asking not to use laptops? for anyone like me that enjoys coffee places to work i wouldn't recommend. i have to say tho that the staff was very friendly & welcoming.
The drinks, sandwich & cornetto Nutella were delicious! I would go back. The seating inside is hard to get, but there is a patio out front with beautiful sun in the morning! I will be going back!
Definitely my coffee spot when I visit Montreal. Very good quality coffee as I would drink in Italy. The staff is very friendly & the atmosphere is pretty cozy. Grazie ragazzi!
