The second time I visited was on May 13th, 2026, & I ordered a coffee to enjoy at a table. Once seated, I saw a sign for no laptop use. I asked the barista why that was, & he said the owner prefers people to socialize & mingle. I looked around & saw everyone there on their phones, lol. I sat back down & opened my laptop because I needed to read a document. A person stood around my table; he may have been taking photos without my authorization. When he sat down, I'mingled', lol. I explained the rule against laptops, & I found it a bit unusual. I said I had to read something for an exam, he commented that it's a noisy place to study, I replied that it's exactly what I needed & why I came to this cafe - my prerogative to be in a noisy environment- judge me if you like. Then another barista came to my table, placed the cash I had paid for the coffee on it, & said that if I wanted wifi & a laptop, I should go elsewhere. Wow, what is happening to my favourite people on earth for hospitality - Italians-? I didn't need or ask for Wi-Fi. I simply needed to access a document, which for me was easier on a laptop than on a phone. I drank my coffee - when I finished, I placed my coffee cup upside down on its saucer (the meaning of which was lost on them) & didn't pick up the money the barista was implying was a refund of some sort. How does a $6.00 refund make up for the classless behaviour? & the lack of tolerance? As if I were going to park myself there all day with nothing else to do, which I assumed was the real reason for the no-laptop rule. I didn't need Wi-Fi or an electrical outlet. How dare you be so intolerant & assume my motivation? If the staff had been patient for 15 minutes, they would have noticed that when I finished my coffee, I would have left. Instead, they assumed & made my experience very unpleasant. If the person next to me was in fact the owner, he was not forthcoming with this- hello, transparency, anyone. I left, & they picked up the cash I left behind- as if that is to make up for the bad experience- shame on you for your lack of tolerance, transparency & assuming customer behaviour- this is a fail!
A delightful Italian espresso bar in downtown Montreal. Don't expect any syrups or matcha here. They adhere strictly to Italian espresso culture standards! Coffee is excellent!
I dream about having a place like Bar Caffettiera where I live. (one day...)
They perfectly capture the essence of an Italian coffee bar, & they even have some signage to ensure you understand that (which I totally loved seeing). No giant vats of coffee, no sitting for hours with a laptop nursing along a $4 purchase. Have your coffee, maybe a pastry & be on your way.
& the coffee is just sublime. A dimensionally-correct cappuccino is a thing of beauty, & Bar Caffettiera nails it every time.
& why not stop by in the afternoon for aperitivo? They are stocked with everything you need for a cocktail or a cold beer.
Five stars -- these are the kind of places that make where you live special, & all of Montreal should celebrate (& patronize) Bar Caffettiera.
The café is small & bright with an Italian feel. However, they don't serve espresso-based drinks like Americanos. When I ordered one, they offered an alternative but ended up giving me an iced espresso in a very small cardboard cup. I'm not sure if this was due to the menu or a language barrier. It was also quite loud inside, which made it less enjoyable to sit & have a drink & a chat.
In the heart of downtown Montreal, there are plenty of places to grab a quick caffeine fix, but there is only one Bar Caffettiera. This iconic spot doesn't just serve food & drinks; it serves a masterclass in authentic Italian hospitality & style.
Walking into Caffettiera is like stepping through a portal directly into a bustling Rome or Milan café in the mid-1990s. The vibe is absolutely insane-in the best way possible. From the retro, colorful Memphis-group-inspired decor to the energetic buzz of conversation, the atmosphere is incredibly vibrant & effortlessly cool. They have perfectly captured the Italian sprezzatura (studied carelessness). Whether you are standing al banco (at the bar) to knock back a quick espresso or lingering at a table, you feel like you are part of an exclusive yet entirely welcoming club.
While the aesthetic is a massive draw, the coffee is what cements Caffettiera's legendary status. The coffee here is superb, adhering strictly to proper Italian traditions. Expect rich, perfectly extracted espressos with a thick, beautiful crema, & cappuccinos poured with exact ratios-no oversized, diluted drinks here. It is strong, smooth, & served at the perfect temperature to be enjoyed immediately.
Beyond the coffee, the authentic Italian snacks, sandwiches, & pastries (especially the cornetti) round out the experience flawlessly. It is the perfect spot for a quick morning start or a mid-afternoon pick-me-up that transitions smoothly into their famous aperitivo hour.
Bar Caffettiera is an absolute Montreal institution. It offers an uncompromising, joyful celebration of Italian cafe culture right in the middle of the city. For anyone who appreciates superb coffee served with an unforgettable, lively atmosphere, this is a non-negotiable must-visit.
Best cafe in town.
I'm in love with the caffè nocciola.
I migliori baristi italiani sono qui 😍 I'm the biggest fan
This is the best thing about this caffetteria - love them all!! 💘
Coming back for more panino di mortadella e pistacchio 🩷💚 Es brutal.
El de rapini también… una locura.
Next time I'll ask you for a dozen da portare fino a Barcellona. Aunque es obvio, me los como en el avión 😅✈?
Big hug guys, grazie mille for the greatest time in Montreal 🇨🇦✨
Friendly staff but hot chocolate was from a packet, coffee decent, but incredibly loud like a sports bar.
Great coffee, great vibe, great people. A fusion of an authentic Italian coffee bar with a little hipster twist. Also doubles as a cocktail bar. No frills, no americanos.
Reasonably priced, especially for downtown.
Had a pistachio double espresso shot which was delicious.
They also have typical sandwiches you might find in Italy along with their own creations.
Focaccia sandwiches were super light, fresh & crunchy. Great coffee. Great bomboloni. Great atmosphere. They made this place out to be a typical trendy'bar' you would find in Italy. Including the all italian staff & typical italian service; a little slow, a little disorganized & a loudly chaotic. It gives you that feeling of being in the old country so for someone who is used to North American standards maybe its not the place for you! Small quaint coffee spot. Can't wait to go back!
Cafe / cocktail bar with European flair. Great coffee, good pastries & an awesome patio. Perfect stop for a weekend coffee
(To my American friends: you will get to know here the European sizes of coffee. Significantly smaller than in US)
Good way to start your morning. I mean, a few pushy, impatient customers, budging in front of me, but happy the barista noticed & served me before them.
Sorry for eaten pastries in photos I had no patience to taste 😁 was delish.
Ordered my Americano & extra shot of espresso & notified me they do not add water, it's against policy or something (I am very forgetful). I ordered the top 3 pastries & a meat & cheese sandwich, & was not disappointed. Thank you Bar C.
Really cool spot, great decoration & style, nice music too. The atmosphere is pretty chill & transports you to an Italian coffee bar. I try a cheese & eggplant sandwich & a marocchino coffee & both were superb!
Honestly the best coffee I've had. The pastries & the sandwiches are delicious & the prices are very reasonable.
The guys behind the bar seem to always be enjoying their work & the music/style of the place really brings everything together.
I'd visit this place daily if I could.
Montreal has hundreds of great coffee shops…Bar Caffettiera is a notch above. Stepping in to the space you are greeted in French & Italian. The menu is just like any of the ubiquitous Italian cafes…even offering to coretto your espresso. Perfect macchiatos served with a small glass of sparkling water. Delicious Italian sweet breads stuffed with Nutella or pistachio cream. Peroni or Prosecco, Baci or torrone.
Mille grazie e ciao bello
I had a stop over in Montreal & needed a coffee. I always like cafes either an aesthetically pleasing vibe & this had it. The baristas are great, friendly & make a damn good latte. I had an Italian pastry which was absolutely delicious. The decor inside was super nice. I took a star off because there wasn't enough seating but that's not their fault. It was just a popular spot.
Stumbled upon this place around the corner from our hotel. Excellent coffee & the amarene cornetto & nutella cornetto were amazing, more bread-like but very very good! Later on we stopped by for a pressed panini & it was also amazing. They toasted it & the bread was soooo good. Really cute place (with cute baristas) & excellent genuine Italian products. Wish we had a place like this in Brooklyn.
