J'avais vue des bon commentaires sur cette place, j'ai étais déçus. Quand il y à beaucoup de choix sur une carte c'est souvent que le cuisine est pas super. La pizza était pas super, le wrap legume grillé encore moins. Le sandwich j'en parle meme pas. Le steak était bon & les cocktails aussi. La salle intérieur est grande & peut accueillir des grand groupe. Nous étions en même temps qu'un groupe de famille & les enfants courraient de partout & pousser nos chaises, ça a rendu la repas très désagréable.

I've visited Universel Déjeuners (359 Rue Ste-Catherine O.) four times in the last three years, with the most recent time in July 2025. It has consistently provided satisfying & tasty breakfasts with good service & reasonable value.
Each time, I've been seated promptly & treated courteously. Although the servers are busy, they've done a good job each time. The coffee was refilled, the orders were done right, & the service was pleasant & efficient.
I had the namesake Déjeuner Universal. Two scrambled eggs, a crepe with added strawberries, bananas, & chocolate-hazelnut spread, along with bacon, brown beans, home-fried potatoes, toast, jam & cretons. I added ham & sausages, too. It was a massive breakfast, but I was very hungry (I'd been exercising a lot & walking about 30,000 steps a day.) It did not disappoint. Au contraire!
I've also tried their waffles. Very tasty! Their maple syrup was perfect. Not sure why, but it somehow tasted better than what I've had at other breakfast restaurants.
Previously, I enjoyed a tasty Mexican breakfast burrito, filled with scrambled eggs, cheese, brown beans, salsa & guacamole, & accompanied by their delicious home-fried potatoes & some fresh fruit. Very tasty. Very satisfying.
The portions have always been good & they seemed to use fresh, quality ingredients. The menu is big.
The place was clean & orderly, & the decor was modern & pleasant.
I've been to their similar-sized competitor nearby (a bit east on Ste. Catherine), but I prefer Universel Déjeuners.

We were a group of three young women. Food & atmosphere was on level with any other restaurant at this price point. When it came time to pay the $140 tab, I realized I had only brought $150 with me & left the server a $10 tip. When our server saw the tip, she proceeded to chastise us, telling us she only makes $12 per hour & that she expected at least a $40 tip... & then stayed at our table & demanded we give her more money. I have never seen or heard of any establishment allowing their staff to do that & shame on them for paying their staff so little that servers have to resort to bullying their own customers to make ends meet. Nobody should support any Universel.

J'ai eu deux expériences très différentes à L'Universel.
La première fois, c'était pour un lunch : service excellent, personnel attentionné, & le plat de saumon était absolument délicieux. J'étais très satisfaite.
Malheureusement, lors d'une seconde visite pour un souper, j'ai commandé le même plat, & j'ai été déçue. Le goût n'était pas du tout le même, & la qualité semblait moindre. Mon ami a également été déçu par son plat.
Dommage pour ce manque de constance. Le restaurant a du potentiel, mais il faudrait vraiment plus de régularité dans la qualité des plats & du service.

The restaurant is amazing - very clean, & the staff are welcoming & friendly. Theepan , the owner, is always present, checking in to see if everything is okay or if you need anything. He is very kind & attentive. The food is delicious, & the portions are generous.

Top spot for breakfast/brunch or any other time of the day! Amazing menu covers every option, & fresh fruit with everything. Servers are lovely, the prices are great, & the food is delicious! What's not to like?

Un peu cher les repas mais les portions assez grandes donc possibilité de partager. OK pour un lunch un jour de semaine. Poutine excellente.

Personnel incroyable, surtout Saad qui a dépassé le concept de la gentillesse & de la bienvenue. Il est super accueillant, il nous parle comme un ami & rigole avec nous comme un vrai poto depuis 30ans. Franchement il faudrait plus de personnes comme lui, il fait littéralement toute la différence. 10000/10000 & je n'exagère même pas un tout petit peu😁.

Honestly I felt compelled to write a review solely because of how great this place was. The prices were super reasonable, the atmosphere was perfect & represented the heart of Montreal. It was quite busy but our food did not take long at all & the service was excellent & speedy. 10/10 would recommend to anyone staying or passing through Montreal to eat here for a good breakfast.
