About

St-Viateur Bagel defines the quintessential Montreal style through its signature wood-fired bagels, hand-rolled and boiled in honey-sweetened water before baking. Each ring emerges with a distinctively blistered, golden crust and a dense, chewy interior that maintains its integrity under various toppings. The production process occurs in plain sight, utilizing traditional hardwood ovens that impart a subtle smokiness unique to this iconic establishment. Patrons select from classic varieties including sesame, poppy seed, and everything, which provide a reliable benchmark for city-wide culinary standards. The environment prioritizes efficiency and raw craft, emphasizing the transformation of simple dough into an enduring staple of the local diet. This method of preparation remains unchanged, reinforcing the technical precision required to produce these consistent, high-quality circular baked goods at scale.

St-Viateur Bagel is widely considered a staple of Montreal, celebrated for its authentic, wood-fired bagels that feature a signature chewy texture and a light, slightly sweet flavor. Visitors consistently highlight the experience of enjoying them fresh from the oven, noting that the quality and aroma make them a must-visit culinary destination. While the experience is largely a grab-and-go affair without formal seating, the efficient, friendly staff and the ability to watch the traditional baking process add to the shop's charm. Although some customers find the lines long and occasionally note preferences for other local spots, the general consensus remains that these are among the best bagels available, with many patrons making regular pilgrimages to stock up on varieties like sesame, everything, and rosemary.

If you're visiting Montreal & want a truly authentic local food experience, St-Viateur Bagel is an absolute must. This iconic spot has built a reputation that goes far beyond hype.

The moment you walk in, you're greeted by the comforting aroma of freshly baked bagels. What really sets this place apart is that the bagels are almost always warm-often straight out of the wood-fired oven. That warmth isn't just a detail; it completely transforms the experience. The outside has a slight crispness while the inside remains soft, chewy, & subtly sweet, thanks to the traditional honey-water boiling method.

Watching the bagels being made right in front of you adds to the charm. Whether you go for a classic sesame or poppy seed, or try something like cinnamon raisin, every bite tastes fresh & satisfying.

Pros:
- Consistently warm, fresh bagels straight from the oven
- Authentic Montreal-style bagels with a unique slightly sweet flavor
- Open 24/7, making it perfect for late-night cravings
- Affordable pricing for high-quality, handmade products
- A true local experience with visible traditional baking methods

Cons:
- No seating on this location, this is more of a grab-&-go spot
- Can get quite busy, especially during peak hours
- Cash-only at times
- Limited menu if you're looking for a full café-style experience

Overall, St-Viateur Bagel isn't just a place to eat-it's an experience. The combination of tradition, quality, & that signature warm bagel every time makes it unforgettable. If you're in Montreal, skipping this spot would honestly mean missing out on one of the city's most beloved culinary traditions.

It felt like there was magic all over Montreal, Quebec.

I think it was my second day there when my friends wanted to try this bagel shop. When we arrived, we were stunned by how popular the place was - there were people from different provinces & even other countries who had come to visit. Everyone had the same chill, natural manner. Despite the cold & the long line, I noticed a vintage shop next door that added even more charm to the scene.

I have to say, everything related to Quebec seems so stylish & unique.
Finally, we got inside the store. Newspapers & photo memos were pinned to the wall like butterfly wings. The staff moved around constantly, almost like they were part of a well-rehearsed dance. That's when I realized this place only sold bagels, & you could choose your own toppings or sauces to make them yourself 😋 - a truly authentic experience. We ordered every kind of bagel to try, along with some root beer. Of course, we couldn't finish it all.

I have to admit, they offered more variety here than any other bagel shop I've been to. However, only the most popular bagel was served warm - the rest were cold & hard. The garlic & herb cream cheese was okay, but not great.

Still, I'd say this was more of an experience - almost a social experiment for me.

The parking situation was an impossible mission. We drove for almost an hour trying to find a spot - but there were none. In the end, we took a chance & parked in front of an apartment building 🫢. By the way, there was a lot of snow on the streets at the time, & the shop was in an ethnic neighborhood. It almost felt like being in another world 🔮.

St-Viateur Bagel is a great place to enjoy authentic Montreal bagels at a good price. The bagels themselves are very good-fresh, flavorful, & exactly what you expect from such an iconic spot.

One interesting aspect is how the toppings work. They give you the bagel, & then you choose & buy whatever you want to put on it from the refrigerators next to the counter. You assemble it yourself. This setup has both pros & cons: it gives you flexibility & choice, but it may not be ideal if you're looking for a fully prepared bagel sandwich.

I also liked that they have a wide selection of souvenirs, which makes the visit more fun, especially for tourists. On top of that, the service was friendly & efficient.

Overall, it's a classic Montreal experience with good bagels, fair prices, & a unique self-serve style that many people will enjoy.

I visited St-Viateur Bagel in Montreal & absolutely loved the authenticity! If you're visiting the city, this is a must-try spot for breakfast. The sesame bagel & everything bagel are both amazing fresh, warm, & perfectly chewy. Grab one & head over to Café Olimpico (or your favorite local café) for a coffee the combo is perfect. Highly recommend this Montreal classic!

had the pleasure of trying the traditional bagel at St-Viateur Bagel, & I have to say it was incredible! The portion size is very generous - definitely filling enough for a hearty meal. The bagel itself was perfectly baked with that authentic Montreal-style texture: crispy on the outside, chewy on the inside, & packed with flavor.

The price-performance ratio here is excellent. You get great quality for a very reasonable price, which makes it a must-visit spot for bagel lovers or anyone looking for an authentic Montreal experience.

On my first visit, we waited about 40 minutes in line, which might seem long, but the friendly atmosphere & the smell of fresh bagels baking made the wait enjoyable. We decided to eat inside, & the experience was wonderful - fresh, warm bagels served with great service.

The next day, we wanted to enjoy the same delicious bagels at home, so we ordered via Uber Eats. Even through delivery, the quality & taste didn't disappoint. It was almost as good as eating there!

The staff at St-Viateur Bagel were very kind & helpful during both visits, which made the experience even better. One thing to note: they only accept cash & debit cards, so be prepared for that. Credit cards are not accepted.

Overall, if you're ever in Montreal, St-Viateur Bagel is an absolute must. I'm already looking forward to my next visit & can't wait to enjoy these amazing bagels again

Yes, if you want the real McCoy of Montreal-style bagels, come here. The authenticity shines through & the pricing is reasonable considering their heralded status in town. I greatly enjoyed the product though being cash-only & not offering receipts makes me suspect they're money-launderers or tax-cheats 😜 please start accepting credit cards. I never carry cash.

This is my first time in Montreal. I was looking for an authentic place to eat the best bagels in town. This place is a match. I loved the bagels & the way they have created the menu is smart. I have visited this place twice in straight 2 days. I have also taken some Bagels home for my roommates. The service is good & every staff member is so humble. Bagels are delicious, even the vegetarian options as well. The Wow bagel & Le coco one are my favorite. Atmosphere is there is very aesthetic. I will definitely visit again if I will be in town again.

St-Viateur Bagel in Montreal is an iconic bakery known for its hand-rolled, wood-fired bagels that boast a slightly sweet, chewy texture. Open since 1957, it has maintained a strong reputation for serving some of the best bagels in the city, with flavors like sesame, poppy seed, & everything bagels being crowd favorites.

While the bagels are undeniably delicious, the shop's small space & long lines can make the experience feel rushed. Adding more seating or streamlining the ordering process could improve customer convenience. Nonetheless, for an authentic Montreal bagel experience, St-Viateur remains a must-visit.
