St-Viateur Bagel & Café Montreal Restaurant: Menu, Reviews & Reserve (2026)
BagelsCaféSandwichesBreakfastCateringFood Truck
Since 1957, St-Viateur Bagel has been a central part of the culture and daily life of Montreal. Its legendary landmark bagel shop operates 24/7 and sells over 1,000 dozen bagels a day. St-Viateur Bagel was founded by Myer Lewkowicz who brought his now famous recipe from Eastern Europe. The art of bagel making means hand rolling each one and baking them in a wood-burning oven. The current owner, Joe Morena, with over 45 years of experience in the bagel business, ensures that the traditions at St-Viateur Bagel continue to be respected. Over half a century, this family business has grown to include 4 bakeries and 2 Bagel Cafés in Montreal. Come and visit us soon or order online today. St-Viateur Bagel & Café Mont-Royal is located in the bustling "Plateau". The avenue is lined with trendy cafés, restaurants and specialty food stores, which contribute to the district's European flair. The café menu offers a number of bagel sandwiches, salads, and a wide variety of specialty coffees.

Review Summary

Reviews describe St-Viateur Bagel & Café as a quintessential Montreal bagel experience, with fresh, wood-fired bagels that are chewy and slightly sweet and offered in many varieties, often enjoyed with cream cheese or smoked salmon and in simple bagel sandwiches. The sesame, rosemary-salt and poppy are frequent favorites, and the bagels are praised for their quality and authentic Montreal character. A common caveat is the long lines and wait times, especially at peak times, though staff are described as fast, friendly and accommodating and the atmosphere remains welcoming. Payment is typically cash and Canadian debit, with US cards not accepted at many locations. Most reviews say the experience is worth the wait and a must-visit for bagel lovers visiting Montreal, though a few find the hype a bit inflated or note occasional inconsistency in freshness or value. Overall, it’s a cozy, bustling spot where you can see bagels being made on site and leave with a satisfying, classic Montreal breakfast or lunch.

there are no vegan bagel options (all baked in honey water & containing egg, how strange??) & staff isn't well informed about what actually goes into the bagels. they also refuse foreign cards so you'll need cash

Rude & racist. Won't let you eat if you aren't Canadian. Go to New York they have better bagels anyways, they make sure you're treated at fault for political decision that aren't your fault. They act like you sit in the big chair & deport people. If you do wanna eat be prepared to pay 1CAD=1USD + 25% up charge for being American.

Terrible endroit qui pratique des prix random pour les étrangers, sans compter les regards nous faisant comprendre que les américains ne sont pas les bienvenus. A fui

Un peu déçue. Nous nous attendions à de meilleurs Bagel. Le service est fait à la va vite. Lieu qui garde en mémoire une réelle institution. Mais la qualité n'est pas vraiment au rendez-vous. Trop fast-food.

Overrated.
If you're a tourist, you can only pay with cash. You can only use debit if you're Canadian.
On the other hand, the only good thing is the bagel dough. The filling is nothing special, without much flavour.

It's an experience. Montreal style bagels made in front of your eyes, turned into delicious sandwiches.

Still incredible quality - winter 2026.

Been going to St Viateur for years,no more. I like soft bagels.buy them cut them put them in the freezer,I ask for non burned ones if possible but today they were so burned,Bagels should be soft out of the oven, not burned.

Delicious bagels, my friends & I all loved our selections. We did have to weigh over an hour for a place to sit which sucked but once you have a table the service is pretty fast. It is a small location so it feels pretty tight in there.

Great visit to St-Viateur! Note that it's cash only, but they do accept both USD & CAD. The sesame bagel with cream cheese was excellent, perfectly crunchy on the outside & lighter than typical U.S.-style bagels, making it a great quick bite. The setup is well organized with separate lines for bagel sandwiches & for bulk bagel orders to go, which helps things move efficiently even when it's busy.

This is a cozy Plateau spot that absolutely deserves its reputation for top?tier Montreal?style bagels. The wood?fired bagels are warm, slightly sweet, perfectly chewy. They offer multiple vegetarian choices as well, the Classic bagel is my favourite. Service is fast & friendly even when it is busy, the atmosphere is relaxed, & it is the kind of place that quickly becomes a go?to stop every time you are in Montreal.

Note : Please prepare to stand in the line as there is always a line to go inside, but all worth it.

I've never had such an unpleasant experience as today. The woman in charge was very rude from the start; it seemed like she only had it in for me. My visit was around 10 am. The bagels are delicious, but her service was terrible. I hope you can corroborate this.

We went on a weekday around 10am & the place was pretty empty. We got the traditional on sesame & it was amazing. Definitely better than any bagel you can get in Toronto.

Great service & staff as well.

It's Canadian Debit or Cash only.

If you don't have cash or CANADIAN BANK don't even go. I'm a tourist with no Canadian bank & I couldn't buy from them, just waste my time. All the merch & stuff that we can't even buy.
