Souvlaki George specializes in authentic Greek deli fare, prioritizing traditional preparation methods and high quality ingredients. The menu centers on succulent, herb-marinated souvlaki skewers and thinly sliced gyro meat served within warm, pillowy pita bread. Customers frequently order these signature proteins alongside creamy tzatziki, crisp Greek salads, and seasoned golden fries. The kitchen emphasizes bold Mediterranean flavors, utilizing garlic, oregano, and lemon to define each dish. Beyond the core grill items, the deli counter features various house-made dips and classic vegetable-based sides that round out the menu options. This establishment maintains a focused approach to culinary simplicity, ensuring every plate mirrors the rustic charm of Hellenic street food staples. The straightforward service style facilitates quick accessibility for those seeking consistent, protein-forward meals prepared according to established regional standards.
Souvlaki George is widely celebrated as a legendary and authentic staple in the NDG community, cherished for its consistently delicious Greek cuisine and warm, welcoming hospitality. Many patrons praise the generous portion sizes, the high quality of the marinated meats, and fresh menu items like their signature chicken souvlaki, gyros, and house-made salads. While the majority of guests highlight the efficient, friendly service and the overall comfort of the establishment as a home away from home, some recent feedback notes occasional inconsistencies in quality and rising prices. Despite these minor observations, the restaurant remains a highly recommended destination for casual dining, offering a reliable, value-driven experience that frequently leaves visitors planning their next return.
I LOVE this place so much. The food quality & quantity is amazing, always hot ,
always tasty. Best place to dine out & even better place to order from!
We ate there last night, but unfortunately it wasn't up to spec. My companion ordered the chicken brochette plate & I ordered a gyro with salad & fries.
First the positive things:
It looks like tables have returned to the dining room, which would be nice on a rainy day. If you haven't been here, most of the service is takeout & delivery, or dining on the large terrasse when the weather is good.
The server was friendly & helpful & we received our meals quickly. The restaurant was bright & clean as always.
But,
The chicken brochette plate had overcooked, soggy rice, & the potato wedges were quartered, making them overly large. They appeared overcooked & my friend said that there wasn't much lemon seasoning on them. He said that the brochette, along with the rest of the grilled items, were warm, not hot, even though they were served quickly.
I can understand why food might be warm when it's takeaway, like Uber, but not when it's dine-in.
The tomatoes in my gyro were oversized slices, not wedges, but I was able to eat them with a knife & fork along with my salad. The chicken was somehow overcooked, yet not hot, at the same time, & was under seasoned. Parts of it tasted like it hadn't been carved correctly, with tough bits left in, then grilled.
The overall effect was of things that had been sitting under a heat lamp for a while, bland & overdone.
Being someone who would never send food back to the kitchen & doesn't want to make a fuss during dinner rush, I hesitated about writing a bad review.
I'm probably not their most frequent customer, but I didn't recognize anyone there last night. Are they under new ownership? If so, there are big shoes to fill, because it's a neighbourhood institution, but I really hope they can fix the quality issues, because I love this place & want it to succeed.

Souvlaki George is a legendary spot in NDG for a very good reason. Their chicken souvlaki pita is absolutely incredible, packed with tender, well marinated meat & fresh tzatziki sauce. I have been coming here for years & the flavors are always authentic & deeply satisfying. The portions are huge, offering fantastic value for your money. The staff is incredibly fast & efficient, even when the line is out the door.
When I moved to NDG in 2023, I was looking for a neighbourhood restaurant I could call home. Souvlaki George is home. Their food is consistently excellent. Their service is customer oriented & friendly. I have only ordered delivery or take out from them, but both are easy & fast. I don't go more than three weeks without ordering from them because I know I will always get good food with good prices & good service. They are an institution in NDG & I hope everyone gives them a try & keeps coming back.
Saved me during these trying times (college dining hall food). Absolutely delightful people in the front of the house & the back. I go everytime I'm desperate for a home cooked meal. One time they gave my friend & me free rice pudding in our orders just cuz we frequent so much.
