A bit too much narrative from the bouncer before we were allowed in, a bit too much fog inside, a bit too much tired 80s music from the DJ, & a bit too much harassment from a drunk local patron (not the venue's fault).
The venue has potential, but we left early due to the factors listed above.
The drinks were fine, but the lighting was so dim it was difficult to read the menu & appreciate the work the bartender put into the drinks.View more
Fun place! If you get there too late you will have to wait in line. Music was goodView more
Upstairs: Stylish & upscale Japanese cuisine with high-quality ingredients & some great flavours. That said, the prices are very steep - both food & drinks are expensive. There's a wide selection of sake & wine, but oddly only one beer option, priced at $18 for a 330ml bottle. Portions are quite small, & service was incredibly slow; it took nearly two hours for three small dishes. Service was typical for Montreal - not much warmth or enthusiasm. The host at the door (tall guy) seemed annoyed to see customers arriving & barely acknowledged us. On the plus side, once we voiced our concerns about the delay, our server was very understanding, expedited the next dish, & offered a discount, which was appreciated.
Downstairs: Much better vibes. Intimate atmosphere with a great sound system & all-vinyl sets every night. The drink menu was more varied, including a few reasonably priced Boreal beer options. A good spot for drinks & music.View more
Very cool speakeasy- attentive servers & food was extraordinary! Every single dish we ordered had such unique flavours & the quality of the sashimi was exceptional. Really enjoyed the vibe- the music in the background was very chill & the lighting was appropriately dim. Highly recommend!View more
Amazing staff, ambiance, food & music! A dream night with my girls!!!View more
Got a table at the bar last minute. Had the BEST bartender walk us through the food & sake. Shared stories of Japan. We asked for some teaching on how to eat traditionally. He was so genuine & took this experience beyond anything we have had in the past. The food & the vibe & the music (dj) was wonderful but his personality & time is something we will talk about for a long time. The club vibe after dinner was also really great. Music dancing food team 10 out of 10.View more
This is a great spot & I have eaten here often with much pleasure but things have changed--something I wish had been made clear on the website. Previously, same menu upstairs at Fleurs & Cadeaux & downstairs at Sans Soleil. No longer. I came for a special sake & some fave dishes which are no longer available downstairs. While they still share a kitchen, it seems the two venues are now being made more distinct from each other. I prefer the upstairs menu & seating style so won't be visiting downstairs again. Note that much seating is on backless stools--my friend & I tried to sit side by side so that we should both have back support but were not permitted as it would crowd the next table. We each had a drink & left (after asking for my fave sake to be brought downstairs) so I don't know how to rate this venue now. Great for people with strong backs who enjoy the music-forward vibe. I'm sure the food & drink will be excellent but it may not so comfortable for people who want a quieter space for conversation & need seating with a back.View more
Most fantastic & delicious dinner. Such a great spot with amazing vibes. The music was spot on & the service was top notch. Great recommendations & tasty food!View more
Great food, drinks & staff. The venue is amazing & the music / dancing after dinner was incredible & organicView more
Was in town for a business trip with a colleague & decided to check out the speakeasy downstairs for a drink last Thursday.
I've been to the restaurant a year prior & had a great experience. Amazing service & music. The atmosphere was a refreshing change!
We were mainly at the bar & was served by a young Black woman (sorry forgot her name). She greeted us with a wonderful smile & amazing cocktails. She was diligent & made sure we were having a good time throughout.
If you're seeking a top-notch speakeasy experience with outstanding service, Sans Soleil is a must-visit. Can't wait to return to this gem soon!!View more
Wow! The taste of menu was exceptional, as was the music, the vibe, & a lovely serveView more
The food was nothing short of extraordinary from start to finish! We opted for the Chef's Choice menu, & every dish was a delightful surprise that just kept surpassing our expectations. Our server, Pablo, was an absolute gem-hilarious, friendly, & attentive. He answered all our questions & made us feel completely at home. We were celebrating a friend's birthday, & the thoughtful extra touches truly made the evening special. The music & DJ perfectly set the vibe for an unforgettable night. Highly recommend!View more
Lovely experience from the music, the drinks, to the bartending team who managed the very brief power outage with aplomView more
I hate to say it but there are some bars that just guarantee good music & good vibes & this is one of them. However I have found that recently there have been many tech bros & finance bros coming I think becuase it's so close to the convention centers & it's fine but also they all bring their backpacks here & then it's like stuff is jingling around in there while they're dancing & I just feel like it's a small space already so it just takes up a lot more space to bring your backpack to the dance floor like there's a lot of storage for you to just leave your bag on the ground I promise no one is going to steal it like idkView more
The food is good, the music is great (vinyl mix) but the staff RUINS it. They are super cold & rude, make you feel very unwanted. The signature cocktails sound cool but are not actually good, stick to classics.View more
Amazing experience, including a wide variety of Japanese food, impeccable service, rare & delicious sake & amazing music.View more
Great atmosphere at Sans Soleil. The music was so good to be honest & the place is great. However, when we came in we were told that the kitchen is not running anymore & it was totally fine with us. Shortly after a group came in & they got food served. This left us disappointed. Other than that, the place is great for cozy drinks for sure.View more

We went for our anniversary expecting good drinks & music, but food & service were also exceptional! DJ was very attentive with the music level (besides the selection of good old jazz:)). Thanks for this amazing experience:)View more
Im not one to write bad reviews, but the service was terrible. I've worked in the industry for a long time & I've never witnessed something like this..... seriously re-consider some of the staff or perhaps more experienced people! other than that vibes are great & so is the music.View more
Had to wait in line for over an hour even though there was only 5 people in front of us. Waiting in line we heard people talk about how "cool" & "underground" & especially "worth the long wait" it was... well that was a lie, or my running theory is that everyone is brainwashed into liking this place just because everyone says its good. The music was fine. It wasnt crazy good or bad, they failed to mask how mild it was with a smoke machine. Needless to say we were disappointed. I will say the bouncer was nice though, he let me use his umbrella in the rain for the last ren seconds of our hour wait.View more
We waited at least an hour in the rain with only seven people in front of us. The bouncer had mentioned they were at "max capacity". When we finally got in, there might as well have been only 3 people. The ambiance & music is fine. Mostly filled with pretentious & "edgy" people who hate mainstream. Didn't try drinks or food.View more
sans soleil will always be a great night out - as long as you arrive early or are prepared to stand in line. the dance floor opens around 10:30 & the line piles up quickly. the space is quite small & the numbers inside are kept low so the line moves slowly, but the atmosphere is incredible & the music never disappoints.View more
I took a trip from Toronto to mtl for a weekend in sept of 2023 & I was recommended to come here by a local & they did not disappoint. Great atmosphere, amazing music, vinyl record DJs !!! If you're not a fan of the jumpy sweaty loud clubs, this is the perfect spot!! The music was certainly the centre of attention. Unfortunately I wasn't able to try the food but the cocktails were great & priced very fair !! my friends & I had a great time & will definitely be coming back. Thank you to all the staff for a great experience!!View more
Music was simply incredible. Can't wait to return, thanks for the great time :)View more
The food, vibe, music & attention to detail was fantastic. Melt in your mouth sashimi, tasty duck, pork belly & udon. Ask for a sake pairing & try something earthy & fun. Great recommendations from our server on their sake. Mind blowing flavours. Great experience.View more
This basement bar presents a fun urban experience. No visible front, when you come to this place you'll recognize it from a door with a lineup at the side of a random lot. Gives it a somewhat underground feel to it, pun intended. There is no cover which is great. The place was visibly never fully renovated to be a bar, so it still has the layout of a commercial basement. It does offer some seating around the sides & the back room which is nice. It gets loud but you can still hold a conversation if you are trying to. The bartenders are skilled at their craft. Music here is a bit unconventional but very fun to dance to. Overall this place has a different but enjoyable vibe.View more
I haven't been to a club in a long time & I loved the music & vibes this much. I had a great time price wasn't crazy as far as drinks go it was on par. DJ was great & no flash photography!View more
Sans Soleil is an absolute standout for food & cocktails in Montreal. Tucked away in a tiny space, this charming speakeasy is an adventure to find but well worth the effort. While it seems to be a popular nightlife spot for dancing & music, the real stars are the inventive dishes & expertly crafted cocktails.
My new wife & I visited Sans Soleil while honeymooning in Montreal. The lovely & passionate server Lily guided us through the menu, explaining each item with such attention to detail. We were blown away by the quality & unique fusion of French & Asian flavors, especially at these reasonable prices. The sashimi was incredibly fresh & converted me into a raw fish fan. The duck sashimi style was a revelation - if you've never tried it, you must.
Every dish was meant for sharing & arrived one after another in a progression of flavors. Subtle, complex tastes were artfully arranged in ways I didn't expect from this unassuming spot. Lily delighted in making recommendations, practically ordering for us after hearing what we liked.
The cocktails were just as strong, flavorful & inventive as the food. Each one came with an unexpected twist. The music & dance floor didn't appeal to us that night, but some regulars mentioned it was an odd night for the usual scene.
Make sure Sans Soleil is on your Montreal bar crawl list. This soulful hidden gem delivers an absolutely memorable food & cocktail experience worth savoring.View more
