This was my first time trying pastel de nata .The pastry is light, flaky, & buttery, while the filling has a custard-like texture, more on the firm side rather than runny.
Worth trying if you're curious about this classic Portuguese pastry.
I recently went to Coco Rico, & I honestly can't stop thinking about how good the food was. This place delivers on every level - flavor, value, & overall experience - & it's one of those restaurants you immediately want to tell people about after your first visit.
I ordered the chicken sandwich with potatoes, & it was absolutely outstanding. The chicken itself was perfectly cooked: juicy, tender, & packed with flavor. You can really tell it's prepared with care & experience - nothing dry, nothing bland, just incredibly satisfying from the first bite to the last. The potatoes that came with it were just as impressive. They were creamy, rich, & comforting in the best way possible, almost melting in your mouth, & paired perfectly with the chicken. Together, it felt like a simple dish done exceptionally well.
The staff deserve a huge amount of praise. Everyone was friendly, welcoming, & genuinely happy to help. You never feel rushed or ignored, & that warmth really adds to the experience. It's the kind of place where you feel comfortable right away, whether it's your first visit or your tenth.
One of the most impressive things about Coco Rico is how amazingly affordable everything is. For the quality of food you're getting, the prices are more than fair - & the portions are huge. You leave feeling full, satisfied, & genuinely surprised at how much value you got for your money. It's rare to find a place that combines generous portions, great prices, & excellent food so consistently.
This is absolutely a spot I would recommend to all family & friends. It's perfect for a casual meal, a comforting lunch, or even bringing someone who's never tried Portuguese-style chicken before. Speaking of which - if you love Portuguese food, this place is a must. The flavors, the preparation, & the overall heart behind the cooking really shine through.
Coco Rico is the kind of restaurant that reminds you why you love discovering great local spots. Delicious food, amazing value, friendly staff, & a meal that leaves you happy & already planning your next visit. Everyone should try this place at least once - chances are, once won't be enough.
After having a great meal at this place, I went over to Champs & got zooted in $5 PBRs

The chicken was decent, but not particularly memorable.
If I had to compare, the Portuguese chicken place next door was noticeably juicier. The chicken here felt a bit dry, possibly due to the cooking method, though it's hard to say for sure.
Overall, it was a perfectly acceptable meal, just without that'wow' factor or anything that really stood out.
That said, the roasted potatoes were quite good - especially when dipped in the chicken oil, which added a lot of flavor & was definitely the highlight of the meal.

Oldest Portuguese chicken in Montreal & still the best. Chicken has so much flavor & crisp skin that's amazing . Don't forget the potatoes & the ribs were unreal. Also the rolls are huge & light

We went to one of the more famous Portuguese chicken places & were really disappointed. We immediately went to Coco Rico (which I used to eat at years ago & remembered fondly) & had a WAY better experience. Don't sleep on Coco Rico. The chicken leg & potatoes are top-notch. People are great. Food amazing. Get a Brio.
I have been going to cocorico for almost 20 years & it's still the best place in Montréal For some of the most tender three Portuguese chicken in the city.
Service has always been absolutely friendly above & be on the call of duty. & half an hour before closing, I went in to have a chicken sandwich special - I never felt rushed, & the food was so fresh & so very hot. The chicken sandwich on a fresh roll, with extra sauce - medium, not too spicy, the home potatoes, & creamy coleslaw is my comfort food. I feel bad for the people who had ordered takeout & felt they were short changed, but I've made it a point to eat at the restaurant, & I've always had overstuffed buns with moist chicken breast & crispy skin. The Natas deserve a whole other review on their own - but just this to say, if you feel like you too hungry, take six of them to go - & your night will be complete :) I got to chat with one of the co-owners - who was a delight, bubbly & friendly, & we went down memory lane talking about how being a kid in the 1970s was such a privilege & so much fun. So that's how I ended my night with a full & happy belly & some wonderful shared laughter.
As much as I love Schwartz's, I say skip the lineup & walk up the street to Coco Rico. You'll be happy you did :)
The best place to experience the authentic taste of barbecued pork, lamb, or chicken. A cozy atmosphere, friendly staff, &, most importantly, the warm & welcoming attitude of the Portuguese owner made our day. Don't forget to try their famous Portuguese dessert, pastel de nata, which is arguably the best you can find in Montreal. Highly recommended!

Great Portuguese fast food. I've been going there for 35 years. It's the same good roasting chicken dripping on the potatoes you see roasting in the oven machines. Everything is delicious & they have the best natas. I always take a sandwich, I ask to add a red pepper & some smashed roasted potatoes with the sauce & épices.
The location is very central, the service is exceptional, & the food is fabulous. My family & I, tried a variety of foods & all there were outstanding. The dessert was wonderful, a true authentic Portuguese one. Do not hesitate to go & eat there or take out, the food is very good & you will not regret it. Enjoy like us! Kudos to Coco Rico hard working owner!
Montreal's best kept Portuguese secret, hidden in plain view. To all of you lined up for Schwartz' (blocking the entrance to Coco Rico): ever wonder where the delicious smells are coming from? It isn't from the smoked meat. Coco Rico has the best, juiciest & most flavourful pork, chicken & chourico sandwiches in the city. Potatoes roasted with the juices from the meats. Delicious breads, even the day-old ones are worth the drive. & don't leave without a six pack of natas. Been eating here for 40 years - hope to keep doing so for another 40!
My last dinner on this trip to Montreal & I wanted Portuguese, something almost nonexistent back home (Calgary). I chose this place because it was reasonably close to where I was staying & had good reviews. I got the trio with the roasted pork sandwich, the roasted potatoes & I chose the carrot salad from among six options. The good: the carrot salad was fantastic! The somewhat good: some of the potatoes were melting perfection, but some were dry- since it's these potatoes that are endlessly extolled on here I expected better. They were good, but not great. Same with the sandwich. The meat was tender & tasty but rather meagre. The bread looked gorgeous but was a bit dry.
Just made peace treaties with my hunger by ordering not one, not two, but THREE types of Portuguese sandwiches: chicken, roasted pork, & chouriço-all on Portuguese bread slathered in homemade spicy sauce. I threw in some roasted potatoes & homemade fries for good measure. Because, why not turn lunch into a carb festival? 🍞🥔🍟 Oh, & washed it all down with a craft beer from Brasseur de Montreal because, hey, hydration is key! 😂🍺 #SandwichSmorgasbord #CarbLoadingLikeAChamp
