Had I written a review before today, it would have been 5 stars in every category. I have been there 3 times in the past year. The first time, the food was great as was the service at the counter. I went there on Tuesday, April 8th, 2025, at 6:30 pm, just before the Montreal Canadiens' very important hockey game (which they won; 6 games in a row). The atmosphere was magical! I sat at a tiny booth & looked out at the snow softly falling. I don't like the snow & winter, especially not in April, but the Alamo Burger I was enjoying was so amazing, I wanted to write a poem about the experience. I wanted it to go one & on. Each bite of the burger tasted better than the last. I loved the music too. It was from a Spotify Spies Jazz playlist, the server informed me, who was as nice as could be. I could only eat 1/3, & that was too much. I asked for a box to take the rest home & realized that it would have been better for me to ask to be served only half at the table & given the other half in a box when I leave. Many of us were brought up to clean our plates & I ate too much. Having the delicious food in front of us is too tempting to continue eating when you've had enough. I got sick later that night at home because I hadn't eaten very much in 3.5 months. I had told the smiling manager that the food was amazing & the service was even better. I went back today, Saturday, April 12th, because I had some business next door & I would have loved just a two bites of an Alamo burger, No snow, this time, just a faint hardly noticeable drizzle. No excitement in the air. No magic, no great music, no smiling male manager. However the girl who greeted me was sweet. I asked the waiter if it would be possible for someone in the kitchen to cut the hamburger in half & box it, serve me half & let me take home the rest when I leave. He said''We can't do it. It's policy & it won't look good on the plate.'' I'm thinking, :they must have good knives for this in the kitchen.' He said,''You can eat what you want & wrap up the rest to take home with you.'' I told him I didn't want to; it was too much food to eat. Another person came at me, like a policeman, in an angry tone.''It's not unreasonable to ask you to wrap up the rest yourself'' I politely said it was unreasonable; I just wanted two bites.''''We don't do that here.'' The way he spoke, in my face was angry & aggressive, not at all good customer service. His tone injured me. I have been a waitress for many years in high class restaurants & hotels. I always loved to accommodate clients' request, with a smile. If a customer asked me that, I would have found a way to satisfy their request because I love to spoil people & make them happy. If they wanted tea with thin full slices of lemon to fill the cup instead of wedges, I cut up thin slices. I could have asked to have it to take out, but I was made to feel very unwelcome & needed to get out of there. I left, feeling as if he threw me out. There was an elderly man sitting on the sidewalk in the rain a few feet away. He looked tired & sad. I went to Five Guys around the corner & bought a cheeseburger & fries which was probably not anywhere nearly as good as the $26 burger from Reuben's, & filled the bag with some salted peanuts in the shell they had to help yourself to, while waiting in line, & brought it all to the gentleman, with lots of napkins. He was still sitting in the rain. I didn't need to eat a hamburger & be treated as a persona non-grata, trying hard to get the disrespect out of my mind. The gentleman needed the hamburger & respect. I gave it to him & went home feeling satisfied after all.View more

The food is great we ordered 3 different types of burgers & all of the were great it came with I cup of fries each plate & it seemed never ended with just the right amount If salt,I also recommend the strawberry cheese cake it's the best one I ever had totally recommend!! The beer was good Food experience: Very disappointing. My sandwich was poorly made, & the bread was toasted with old butter, which left an unpleasant burnt taste. They are using frozen fries similar that you want get in McDonald's very disappointing as well for the price that you're paying at this placeView more

Service was good! Prompt & helpful. We asked for some recommendations & were mostly met with "I wouldn't order this, but everything else is great". We got the large corned beef sandwich that we shared. The bread was a little sad, like soggy? Would be better toasted like on a reuben. The mustard was good. I really like that the meat wasn't fatty at all. Sometimes I feel that corned beef sandwiches are really tough & fatty which wasn't the case here. Had the onion rings which were good but not special at all. Not sure you get enough for the price. Also got the short rib poutine, & for some reason the meat was cold? The fries were hot & steaming, but the meat was cold until we buried it under the fries & gravy & then it warmed up. It was good but not outstanding. Had two cocktails, they were pretty solid. Nothing was super standout, at nearly $40 I think I expected a little more flavour in the sandwich, & nicer bread. I'd go again but would maybe try other items. So overall a 4 star experience.View more

I was confused between this place & another Reuben that's close by. Well, the other one wasn't open so I could only visit this one. Came here for my 2nd dinner as I only had one day in Montreal. I had to get the "OG" sandwich with smoked meats. Boy, did it not disappoint. It was the best thing I had with my 3 meals in Montreal. The smoked meats were flavorful & tender. With melted cheese, I really liked it. I did upgrade the fries to a poutine, but this didn't impress me. I don't like my fries soggy & the cheese & gravy certainly did. It was also on the salty side. My wife got the French onion soup as she couldn't eat much for her 2nd dinner. The soup was not bad, but she had made one before & I think it was better. I also read some reviews & was looking forward to the black cherry soda. Glad I ordered as it was tasty! The service was great as our server checked in with us often & was very courteous. Nice display of smoke meats in front. I would certainly go back, even if it was just for the smoked meat sandwiches.View more

Easily one of my favorite sandwiches ever. The Famous Super Sandwich is wonderful. Their smoked meat is unbelievably tender & stacked high on the bread. I had to eat it with a fork. Just wow! & the fries are slim & crisp too. Just had one bite of the slaw & it was tangy. We also had the smoked meat mac & cheese. It was good but not nearly as good as the sandwich. Our server was very friendly & we had a good chat with him. Highly recommended!View more

$30 for a sandwich & fries that a normal human is unable to eat as an actual sandwich between 2 pieces of bread is absurd. the meat to tiny bread ratio is waaay of. & this might be controversial, the smoked meat is average by MTL standards.View more

The first thing I want to mention is not to trust the menus posted here, as they are outdated. One of their Famous Sandwiches is like $29, & not $19 as I saw in other posts. However, the food is delicious. I bought a sandwich to go & it came with A LOT of fries & some coleslaw. Two can eat out of it. & I must admit it was really really good. I can't wait to go there on my next visit to MontrealView more

Good otherwise, but not the place to go if you have dietary restrictions such as having celiac or needing to eat a gluten-free diet. There is no gluten-free bread &, even if there were, the famous sandwiches are cooked on a shared grill with high possibility of cross-contamination. Any fried foods (like french fries) are cooked in a shared fryer. Even sides that are typically gluten free, like rice, contained gluten. & no gluten-free dessert options. That said, our server went out of his way to talk to people in the kitchen & identify a few gluten-free options for me, which was much appreciated. I ended up having grilled salmon with veggies. There were also a couple of salads that could be modified to be gluten free.View more

Stopped in for a takeout meal. I ordered the smoked meat sandwich meal, which includes sandwich, fries, coleslaw & a pickle. I was amazed at the amount of thinly sliced smoked meat that was on the sandwich. Was supreme. Wish I lived closer, am from out of the city. The manager, while my friend & I were there was such a friendly guy, sharing travel stories for our entertainment. Huge thumbs up, & if you crave smoked meat, this most definitely is the place to go.View more

Wow! What an amazing place. The atmosphere alone is worth turning back some well preserved time. Then of course you have all the fine staff. In perfect attire to suit the business. All with the best customer service skills as well. As for my server Tanya. Man was she ever knowledgeable & extremely helpful. Certainly made my first visit to Montreal start off on the right foot. Let's not forget the food. When in Rome you know.... So yes, I started my adventure with a Montreal Smoked Meat sandwich & a sour pickle with slaw & fries. Take a very good look at that sandwich in the picture. Looks massive & delicious right? How about incredibly good tasting & extremely filling as well. You know the one in the picture.... Yeah that's the regular size. Take another look, that's regular. There's one bigger! Why? lol!!! My goodness what a fantastic place, best food & amazing staff. Let me tell you what you wanna do here: get a sandwich or burger & because everything comes with fries, make those fries a little poutine! Ordering a poutine starter was bold & unnecessary. I wish the poutine was served flatter & on a wider platter (like nachos): the gravy was all in the centre/at the bottom, & the meat was all on top & it was impossible to mix everything, you couldn't get the perfect bite. The gravy wasn't my favorite. The Delmonico was very good (that buttered bread yum yum) & not for anyone on a diet. It was good for two people. We were served a very different bottle of wine than ordered. It still tasted good & was the same price but funny that they presented that at all (it wasn't even on the menu). April 2024View more

Everything was great. The only thing I would let people know about is that it's a little pricey. Absolutely worth it in my opinion since the food & services were A1, but expect to pay a minimum of 35$ per person(tax & services included). Still, with that said, I will definitely be back. Their smoked meat sandwhich was delicious & their fries were some of the best I've ever hard. Think gourmet Mcdonalds fries, in the best way possible. I think they might be using beef fat.View more
