We visited from Toronto & loved the atmosphere as soon as we entered. So simple, humble, authentic, organic... Beautiful as is. Being a couple from the industry, a restaurant manager & a head chef, I should admit that our table is usually a hard one. Here are some of our observations & appreciations :)

Food was such a quality that it easily shows the care, effort & attention paid to it. Very successful texture combinations. When it comes to flavors, we both think that Chef has an obvious pattern in every single dish, which is smoky (charring many components) & sour. This profile somehow showed itself in the dessert course, too, with burnt buttermilk cake & tart apple compote. My chef at the table thinks the turmeric yogurt under the lobster can be swapped with the yogurt comes under the cucumber & spinach dish! Just a humble suggestion.

Service was so warm & cozy, aligning with the restaurant's soul itself. We are absolute wine people, didn't prefer the tasting as we always try to explore different bottles, & the one recommended by sommelier brought true joy to our table.
One of the chef's doing a table service during cheese course was an impressive & inclusive touch to the experience as well.

I cannot not mention the sourdough bread & their generosity in serving it. It was & is the best we both have ever had & even told our server that we would not have a single complaint if they fed us that bread only as is, accompanied with wine. Still, 5 millions stars!

One more mention before I finally conclude this review. I noticed something & hoping that I am cracking an easter egg with it: the roof &/or book-shaped lamps shades above each table, combined with brick walls, wooden church-style tables & chairs (the restaurant is tucked in an old church, which is another wonderful touch)... Every table looks like a little cozy house. & I personally loved the idea of two of us having our own little house at that table. With a simple but the best ever bread & wine. Happy life :)

We send heartfelt thanks to the whole team & the owners behind it to make such an experience possible.

Updated from last visit.
Visited Candide again. & it delivered smart, spring menu - vegetable forward with refreshing sauces, sophisticated ingredients & great service. This is the Candide that we know & love!
- The radishes were perfectly cooked, accompanied by a very tasty (bell pepper?) sauce. Perfect dish to start the show.
- Cucumber with spinach was a very light yet tasty dish. The texture was fun & the buttermilky, slightly sour sauce was very refreshing.
- Crab with carrots, yogurt & basil was a perfect combination of slightly sweet & savory. Baked & fresh carrot added the texture & the basil brought the brightness & freshness it needed. Yogurt went very well with crab & brought everything together.
- Don't let the tomato sauce in a halibut mussel dish fool you - it's actually creamy & slightly spicy with a touch of tomato. It all comes together in a very subtle yet satisfying combination.
- I've never thought chrysanthemum tastes so good with the hen & burned onion!
- Both desserts were great & again fruit forward with natural sweetness.
Really enjoyed the dinner which wasn't too heavy but with large enough portions to walk away full & satisfied. Looking forward to coming back!

Great atmosphere & service but the food is not as it used to be 2-3 years ago. Out of four courses, two were subpar. Especially the fish course (arctic char-on the photo) with sweet sauce & carrots. Somehow the dish was too salty & too sweet at the same time. It was bad, with weird flavor. The second course was some sort of soup with leeks & mussels. It was sour & you couldn't chew anything on the plate. The first course, the oyster & the dessert were solid, with great flavor. This is why I used to love Candide-simple, but sophisticated & tasteful. Unfortunately I don't think we will be coming back when half of the dishes are a miss. Also a mocktail was not really a mocktail but an apple juice.

I put two stars instead of one because the place was generally packed the entire time & clearly other people love it, but my group absolutely did not like the food. It was a four course set menu, but the flavors were not it at least for us. Some of our party got wine & they also were not a big fan of that either. I will say that the seating area is cute & there's a nice vibe in the restaurant, but we could not get past the food. The four course menu included a course of cauliflower then something with tomatoes & what tasted like cinnamon & then a main dish of fish or mutton, & finally cheese or cake for dessert. I also found the food took a lot of time.

solo dinner & enjoyed the experience there. very homely interior with a very small team of staff (4 only). but despite that, service was still attentive & each course was brought out swiftly.

food was delicious, but not spectacular. well crafted, but not memorable.

oysters from new brunswick ($3.5 each) with added cream wasnt really to my liking.

rutabaga was interestingly cooked & was the standout of the night.

endives was a bit salty.
artic char from montreal was cooked well, but flavor of the fish still remained fishy & relied too much on the sauce rather than the taste of the fish itself.

dessert was decent.

had a cocktail to go along with it.

total bill came up to $150 with tax & tips.

noting they are short staffed, as you leave no one bats a head to you. even the chefs behind the counter were busy preparing the food. dedication i guess.

Incredible, worth every penny. Visited in October & was blown away by the outstanding service & exceptionally creative menu. Particularly loved the wine pairing, roast pork with radicchio, & the incredible savoury dessert (buttermilk cheese with grilled shishito pepper). I strongly recommend to anyone in Montreal to spoil themselves to this menu in full, you will not be disappointed.

Excellent service, nice decor. The set menu was full of flavour & locally sourced. I don't even like tomatoes & green beans that much & I still enjoyed the second course. The halibut & the vegetable plate were fantastic. The dessert wasn't a bit too corn-ey for me but was still well done. All the cocktails were nice & well presented but I think the Tarragon was the best.

The restaurant is behind a church, there are no signs - call for directions before you come & expect a slow paced meal. If you don't speak French there will be communication issues - make sure you are understood clearly. The food is great & it's a beautiful meal but there are certain details they do not attend to … they didn't ask me how I wanted my lamb cooked & it came out to the table rare … dessert came out mostly melted … we asked twice to have more timely service because we had a concert to go to after but the staff still didn't come by to get our check in a timely way.

A Charming Spot with Potential! This quaint restaurant, tucked behind an old church (now a community center), offers a unique dining experience with a focus on quality ingredients, thoughtful cuisine, excellent service, & a warm, inviting atmosphere. I reserved a bar seat for one, but the staff kindly offered me an available table instead. However, I opted to stay at the bar, enjoying the view of the kitchen. The bar seating includes under-table hooks for bags, a thoughtful touch. The seasonal menu is priced at $85CAD, includes two starters, one main, & one dessert. Add-ons oysters (+4$) & wine pairing (+56$ for four half glasses) are also available. The starters featured a good portion & impressive variety of fresh greens, including Brussels sprouts, shallots, radicchio, & spinach. The quality & freshness of the ingredients were evident & much appreciated. For the main, I had the Guinea Hen with Raspberry sauce. The dish was beautifully executed, the meat was tender & juicy, the skin perfectly crispy, & the flavors were well-balanced. The red wine pairing complemented the raspberry sauce nicely, enhancing the dish's complexity. Unfortunately, the starters were overly salty. When I informed my server, they adjusted the seasoning for my main course, which turned out perfectly. Despite the kitchen tasting each dish before serving, the saltiness accumulates as customers finish their plates, making it difficult to enjoy consecutive dishes. I could hardly enjoy my second starter after finishing the first. Dessert was an interesting combination of cheese & sweet potato, but the unexpected spiciness of the sweet potato was surprising. While I can tolerate spice, the level is certain too intense for many others. The menu or server should have mentioned this detail beforehand. Service was attentive after the initial delay, water wasn't served, & no one approached me for the first ten minutes. Additionally, the restroom door was left open for some time, which detracted slightly from the otherwise cozy ambiance. The location may be tricky to find, it's directly behind the church facade. Overall, while there were minor missteps, the quality ingredients, innovative dishes, & accommodating service made for a pleasant evening. I look forward to returning to explore a different seasonal menu.
