My wife & I had an extremely disappointing experience at Mikado Montreal.
Before coming, I called the restaurant at approximately 8:30 PM to confirm whether it would be acceptable for us to arrive at 9:30 PM, knowing the restaurant closes at 10:00 PM. I specifically explained that we intended to order immediately upon arrival so the staff could still close on time. We simply wanted a quick sushi dinner & had chosen Mikado based on recommendations from several friends.
When we arrived at 9:30 PM, the bartender greeted us politely & kindly mentioned that he would check with the kitchen to ensure they were still serving. While waiting, a waitress looked at us from across the restaurant & made a dismissive gesture indicating that they were closed. She then approached us & bluntly said,'We're closed. Sorry. There's nothing we can do.'
I explained that I had called in advance specifically to avoid making the trip unnecessarily. Her response was,'That's not my problem.' She made it very clear that the situation was of no concern to her.
What made the interaction even more confusing was that the restaurant was clearly not empty. There were guests seated in the front section, several more by the windows, & I was informed there was another group dining inside. From what I could see, there were at least 10-15 customers still being served.
As a result, it was difficult not to feel singled out. The only difference I could identify was that I was dressed casually after a long day of work, wearing shorts & a hoodie. My wife was well dressed in heels, jeans, & a nice coat. Whether appearance played a role or not, the experience certainly left that impression.
What disappointed me most was not being turned away it was the attitude & complete lack of professionalism. A restaurant that prides itself on quality, hospitality, & attention to detail should understand that the way guests are treated at the door is just as important as the food served at the table.
Based on this experience, I cannot recommend Mikado. The bartender was courteous & professional, but unfortunately the interaction with the waitress completely overshadowed what should have been a pleasant evening.
Went there for a date the other day, reserved at 8pm but we got there late at like 9:20 pm, by the time we ordered, ate & finished our bottle of wine, I did not see the time pass but they had already closed & we were their last customers, they waited for us to finish without telling us anything since they saw us having a good time, & i only realised that when we were walking out & all the staff was hanging out at the bar. I felt really bad but I was super grateful for that, exceptional staff & amazing service, thank you so much😁
Food was mid for the price, spent 250 for 2 people & expected more but the overall atmosphere is fine except for the Karen that kept looking over at the young couple sitting next to her, not that that's any of the restaurant's fault. Didn't have to wait though because without reservations you could get a few seats at the bar.
Visited Mikado on a friend's recommendation, mainly for the cocktails - & it didn't disappoint. Simone, the bartender, was amazing. Every drink we had was refined, balanced & honestly one of the best we've had. The manager told us that Lola poured her heart into creating these cocktails & it showed.
Service was friendly & fast, with great hospitality all around. The space was beautiful, & even the bar seating felt spacious & cozy. The food was great as well, especially the small bites & rolls. Would absolutely come back.
I've been a regular at this restaurant for a while because the food is always fresh, flavourful, & nicely prepared. The kitchen team deserves credit. Unfortunately, the front-of-house service continues to fall short, & my experience on Monday, June 9th, was especially disappointing.
I had called ahead to ask if Caesars could be made at lunch, since I know there's no bartender during the day. The woman who answered assured me they could. But when we arrived, not only were we left without water for over 15 minutes on a hot day, the server was dismissive & rude when my friend politely asked about it.
When she finally came to take our drink order, she told us they didn't have Clamato - despite having said yes on the phone. I offered to pick some up from the depanneur just down the street or asked if someone from staff could, but she refused without a trace of apology or effort. Even more frustrating, she declined to take responsibility for having confirmed something she hadn't checked.
In the end, I had to relocate my guests to another restaurant - not because of the mix-up, but because of how she spoke to us. The way we were treated made it clear that our presence wasn't welcome.
I hate to leave this kind of review, because the food truly is good, & I've had a few good service experiences in the past. But the inconsistency - & especially the tone of this last visit - is making it hard to justify coming back. I hope management steps in, because the kitchen deserves better front-of-house support.
Was sitting on bar. Was her first time trying sushi 🍣
I think is best place to have sushi in Montreal
We came with high expectations but left disappointed. Despite arriving early, we waited 30 minutes past our reservation time to be seated at the sushi bar. Service was slow & our waiter barely acknowledged us. From our seats, we saw two chefs cough into their hands & continue preparing food, which was very concerning. While the sushi tasted fresh & delicious, I became very ill shortly after getting home-that was the last straw. On top of everything, the payment machine forced a minimum 18% tip, which isn't legal. Overall: great food, but poor service, questionable hygiene, & an unfortunate ending to the night.
Truc & Kuong were amazing with their service at the sushi bar, 100% recommend it!
Food: I would definitely recommend the sashimi assortment & toro, everything tasted so fresh & had a great texture. The sushi rolls are quite unique, twists on the classics, & it was very enjoyable to taste.
The desserts deserve their own highlight, the deconstructed apple pie was so refreshing & the cherry pie is absolutely irresistible. I loved the mix of flavours & textures, & they might be one of my favourite desserts in Montreal.
Service: Our waiter was amazing, he was incredibly nice & patient with our questions, also very friendly. He recommended that we try custom cocktails from the bartender, who can make a drink based on your preferences, & all of them were perfectly on point, & they were delicious.
Atmosphere: Really great vibes for a night out with friends or date night. I cannot recommend it enough.
