Mikado modestly tries to master this art in skilfully preparing sushi and sashimi as well as teriyaki, tempura, soba and a vast assortment of other succulent dishes. Among the pioneers of Japanese cuisine in Montreal back in 1987, Mikado first opened with an 80-seat capacity and only two employees. But through the magic of word of mouth, Mikado expanded and can now welcome 130 guests in a pleasant, family-style and laid back environment conducive to appreciation of great food. Kimio Nguyen, the chef-owner, now has under his wing a wonderful team of over 40 loyal and attentive professionals whose culinary philosophy is based on Japanese tradition while taking into account the eclectic tastes of Montrealers. Three basic elements underpin Mikado's philosophy: creativity, simplicity and balance. Creativity to dazzle with original dishes; simplicity to allow for the experience of full unadulterated flavours; and balance to beautifully bring together tastes, textures, ingredients and colours. The attention to detail and aesthetics is reflected in the decor and even in the use of hand-made tableware. With all this in mind, Mikado tries to fulfil the needs and desires of its customers. We came here on a Friday. The ambience was nice, but for the price & portions, the food didn't really meet our expectations. Although it looked visually amazing, the taste didn't quite match the presentation. Fresh fish on its own has a mild taste & traditional sushi is prepared with minimal sauce. However, we were expecting something that would stand out more in terms of depth/combination of flavours.
The only roll we truly enjoyed was the NDG one. We preferred the appetizers because they had more seasoning/sauces which added a good contrast of flavours to the tuna & scallops. If you enjoy sushi prepared in a very minimalistic or traditional way, you may appreciate it more than we did.

Impeccable (polite, warm, proactive) servers & sushi chefs, zen ambience & high quality delicious food. I give their dumplings a best in the world rating, veggie or shrimp or a mix of both. The agedashi tofu was perfect (& a nice alternative to takoyaki.) The sushi was fresh & tasty & the soya sauce has a nice flavour. They let you sit as long as you want & make sure you're enjoying yourself & have everything you need. I arrived tonight feeling really stressed & my head hurt & I was having heart pain but within 30 minutes of just being there, it was like I did 4 hours of meditation & almost all my symptoms resolved.. I think I need to come by more often for health reasons lol
We went to Mikado a couple of days ago, & unfortunately I am not convinced.
The sushis were great, but not wow & not justifying their price. Fish was good, but not extraordinary, we've been to better sushis places for cheaper prices. 17$ for 6 sushis … it was a first for me. 6$ for what was supposed to be a tofu nigiri/sashimi turned to be 2 tofu pockets you can buy at the grocery store. Everything was not that expensive & we had other good options. I don't mind paying more if the quality justifies it & it was not the case.
However, the service was impeccable! Everyone was paying attention to our drinks, empty plates, etc. It was definitely a highlight for the night. The ambiance was very nice too & we were able to talk without hearing the other tables.
Un de mes restos préféré, qui m'a amèrement déçu. Les sushis sont arrivés sur la table froids, comme s'ils avaient été préparés à l'avance. D'ailleurs, on s'est assis à notre table à 19:10, on avait terminé de manger à 19:45. Le plateau de sushi est arrivé au complet alors qu'on n'avait pas terminé de manger l'entrée. J'ai senti qu'on précipitait le service afin que d'autres clients viennent prendre notre place rapidement. La différence entre le take out & le resto, c'est de prendre le temps de déguster, savourer les sushis à la bonne température. Autrefois, à Mikado, les sushis arrivaient par rouleau, en services. C'était l'idéal. Le personnel est courtois, rien à dire contre eux. Mais j'irai ailleurs à la prochaine St-Valentin.
La nourriture était très bonne, mais le highlight de notre soirée était le service impeccable de notre serveuse Sam. Ses explications nous ont permis de faire un bon choix, elle avait une énergie contagieuse & honnêtement c'est vraiment un atout de l'avoir dans votre équipe. 10/10 merci Sam !
Checked out Mikado for their night menu & was really impressed. The food was fresh & well made, & the pricing was very fair. The place itself is cozy with great vibes, which made the whole experience even better. Special mention to our server who was attentive & took great care of us throughout the night. Would happily return.

Mikado has always been one of my absolute favorite sushi spots - & this visit reminded me exactly why.
We started with miso soup, soft?shell crab, & a fresh salad, followed by two beautifully presented sashimi platters & two nigiri ones. Every piece of fish was pristine & cut with care - delicate, clean, & perfectly balanced. The lobster roll & paradise roll were equally impressive, marrying flavor & texture in a way that only Mikado manages to pull off.
The sake selection is phenomenal, & the mixologists truly take their craft to the next level. Add to that a team that's endlessly knowledgeable, kind, & welcoming, & you've got an experience that feels both refined & personal.
It's the perfect example of sushi done right - thoughtful, consistent, & made with genuine passion. Highly recommended.
Went there for a date the other day, reserved at 8pm but we got there late at like 9:20 pm, by the time we ordered, ate & finished our bottle of wine, I did not see the time pass but they had already closed & we were their last customers, they waited for us to finish without telling us anything since they saw us having a good time, & i only realised that when we were walking out & all the staff was hanging out at the bar. I felt really bad but I was super grateful for that, exceptional staff & amazing service, thank you so much😁
Super expériance culinaire. Belle présentation. Le mocktail au yuzu 🍋 avec de grand glaçons a été bien aimé. Service très attentionnés. Nous étions avec trois ados & ils ont vraiment aimé. Samantha nous a servie avec attention. Ils nous ont servie sans danger pour les allergies allimentaire de ma fille. Incroyable! Troisième fois que nous venons à ce restaurant & c'est toujours aussi délicieux. Sincèrement, les meilleurs sushis que nous avons jamais mangé. Mes préférés furent le paradise & le tempura, & pour mon copain le titanic & le lona. Merci aussi à notre serveuse, Samantha, pour le service incroyable qu'elle nous à offert. Notre expérience était des meilleurs, & c'était un beau souvenir d'anniversaire!

My dad & I had the best experience at Mikado the other day. The food was incredible, nothing we didn't love. What really took the experience above & beyond was Claudia. She was very kind & very knowledgeable, knew exactly what we would like. You're in the best hands if you're lucky enough to be served by her. Merci beaucoup Claudia! ❤?

Very nice experience. We came as a group with a predefined menu to be served. We all ate to our satisfaction. Quality of food & service was impeccable. Nice staff who helped with a birthday surprise!
Mikado is a stylish, upscale spot with excellent sushi. We arrived in rain jackets since we were visiting, & the host initially asked if we were picking up - which made us feel a bit unwelcome despite having a reservation.
But the experience completely turned around thanks to our waitress. She was warm, friendly, & attentive, & really made us feel comfortable. The food was fresh & beautifully prepared.
A great meal overall, with service that truly made the difference.
