About

Mala Express delivers a bold exploration of Szechuan culinary traditions through a menu defined by the numbing heat of peppercorns and aromatic chili oils. The kitchen focuses on the art of authentic dumpling preparation, offering thin, translucent skins wrapped around seasoned fillings that release savory juices upon the first bite. Signature soups anchor the menu, featuring complex broths infused with layers of spice and fresh herbs designed to invigorate the palate. Each dish prioritizes the balance of piquant, salty, and numbing flavors characteristic of regional Chinese cooking techniques. The dining space emphasizes functional simplicity, allowing the intense profiles of the food to serve as the primary experience for those seeking genuine spice-forward cuisine. This establishment remains a consistent destination for enthusiasts who prioritize deep, resonant flavor profiles over elaborate presentation or superfluous service rituals.

Review Summary

Mala Express is widely regarded as an authentic destination for Sichuan cuisine, known for generous portions and flavorful dishes like dan dan noodles and spicy wonton soup. While many patrons appreciate the homemade taste and fragrant chili oil, opinions on the spice level remain divided, as some find it comfortably warming while others describe it as overwhelming. Despite occasional criticisms regarding seasoning intensity or ingredient ratios, the restaurant is frequently praised as a reliable and reasonably priced spot for satisfying noodle cravings in the area, leading to many repeat customers.

I will preface this review by saying I am a self-described spice fiend. Many a time I have asked restaurants to hit me with their spiciest dishes. Many a time I have been warned about the level of spiciness of a dish. Many a time I have been underwhelmed.

So when the lovely lady at Mala Express warned me, saying'Chinese chilies are not the same as Canadian chilies,' I still chose to order the spiciest possible Dandan noodles.

From my first bite, I knew that this would be my undoing. A level of spice so absolutely overwhelming that my nose immediately started running, my eyes watering. & yet, noodles so fiercely delicious that I knew I had to keep going. Eventually, after taking multiple breaks between bites & drinking an herbal tea & two coconut waters, I finished my bowl. It was absolutely delicious, as were the sour & spicy (mild) cucumbers.

In short, if you love intense flavours & extreme spice, Mala Express will make you feel like you are in heaven. Just don't say I didn't warn you!

I ordered the dan-dan noodles & spicy wonton soup through Uber Eats. The dan-dan noodles tasted homemade, like something my Asian grandmother would make. But I wish there was more of the delicious ground meat & cucumbers because I ended up with a lot of noodles. The spicy wonton Soup was mildly spicy, warm & comforting. I loved the addition of the bok choy. It was the perfect winter dish. Both dishes were big portions, enough for two people. I will definitely be ordering from this place again.

My husband & I, first time eating here & we were not disappointed. The server took her time explaining the dishes & food was delicious. I ordered Wanda & hubby explored with intentine soup. Just be cautious because its really'asian' when it comes to spicyness level. My husband was sweating just from medium spicy (middle level). Believe me, his tolerance for spicyness is high. I took a mild version & still tasted the heat.
Will come back for sure. A hidden gem in west island.

You can select the spice level you would like. For those who have never tried spicy food, i recommend you go for mild because spicy seriously hits.

I always order the Dan-Dan noodles with the mala Nubi wonton soup. In both cases, mild is just enough 😉
