The portions of most dishes, other than the noodles, were surprisingly small for the price. The service was basically nonexistent-aside from being offered water, there was little to no attention from the staff. The food was okay, but definitely not a'wow' experience.
They accept cash, but there's no discount for paying cash. What I found most puzzling was how confidently the bill came with a request for a tip. Given the prices & the level of service, the expectation to tip felt rather hard to justify.
I love their food. I hadn't been there in a year & a half since I became pregnant & had a baby. Finally, today I drove half an hour to go eat there, excited to finally have it again & got turned away for having my 3 months old in a stroller. I understand fire regulation says you can't block the path to the exit. I arrived there at 5pm, me & my husband were the only ones inside since it had just opened. There was plenty of space to not be in the way & against the fire code. Still, the employee just said no. Not going there again.
I will preface this review by saying I am a self-described spice fiend. Many a time I have asked restaurants to hit me with their spiciest dishes. Many a time I have been warned about the level of spiciness of a dish. Many a time I have been underwhelmed.
So when the lovely lady at Mala Express warned me, saying'Chinese chilies are not the same as Canadian chilies,' I still chose to order the spiciest possible Dandan noodles.
From my first bite, I knew that this would be my undoing. A level of spice so absolutely overwhelming that my nose immediately started running, my eyes watering. & yet, noodles so fiercely delicious that I knew I had to keep going. Eventually, after taking multiple breaks between bites & drinking an herbal tea & two coconut waters, I finished my bowl. It was absolutely delicious, as were the sour & spicy (mild) cucumbers.
In short, if you love intense flavours & extreme spice, Mala Express will make you feel like you are in heaven. Just don't say I didn't warn you!

Beware, the taste & smell is very strong. The noodles are fresh but the broth has a strong seasoning that tastes not edible. My sister & I had to throw away our food, we spent 80$ & just dumped it away.
Very authentic Sichuan flavor, & the chili oil is incredibly fragrant! I have a big appetite, so I ordered extra noodles-the portion was very generous! 🌶?🍜
he only downside is that they're closed on Sundays, & I'm often in Kirkland on Sundays.
I ordered the dan-dan noodles & spicy wonton soup through Uber Eats. The dan-dan noodles tasted homemade, like something my Asian grandmother would make. But I wish there was more of the delicious ground meat & cucumbers because I ended up with a lot of noodles. The spicy wonton Soup was mildly spicy, warm & comforting. I loved the addition of the bok choy. It was the perfect winter dish. Both dishes were big portions, enough for two people. I will definitely be ordering from this place again.
