I stayed overnight after arriving for a trip around Quebec via MTL airport assuming I would not want to drive a long ways after flying. This place was really great! I arrived probably as their Saturday dinner rush was picking up, but I was still greeted promptly at the door & shown to my room. The process was very smooth & is was not confusing between the restaurant & the accommodations. The room was very clean, comfortable, & quiet, it was super cozy & relaxing, you can't hear anything from the restaurant or road outside. I slept very well & was really glad that I decided to stay there during my trip. Everyone there was courteous, kind & helpful, as well as accommodating with language.
Since I was staying, I took the opportunity to enjoy the restaurant of course & it was really wonderful. They had a really nice list of cocktails, but I drank some of the local beer since it was warm & I sat on the deck. The whole menu also looked great & I was having trouble deciding, but the smell of the burger was really tempting, so I decided to order that, it was a perfect choice to go with the beer. The bun especially was really good, it seemed homemade either in-house or somewhere local. It came with a ton of french fries too, I felt like I ate a lot of the fries, but still somehow had half a plate left.
If you're staying overnight, breakfast is also included, the breakfast was really good! You have options between something like yogurt & fruit or eggs, etc. There's coffee out as well, the coffee was very good, I think they offer espresso/latte drinks upon request, but I cannot remember for certain because I just enjoyed the coffee.
Additionally, the area is beautiful, it's right next to a river with some falls you can walk around. There's a little pavilion & several benches along the path that leads to a footbridge. This area is not connected to MacTaverne & there are several private cottages, but it is a nice little area to walk around along the public area.
We ate steaks here after a long day in the woods, & it felt like stepping into some fairytale, like a place hidden behind a door at the base of a large tree.. steaks were amazing. Extremely high quality, cooked medium rare how I like it, the fat was the best part. Grass fed fat just tastes different. They have a wizard making cocktails too because the drinks were perfect!
We stopped in to watch a playoff football game on the way home from skiing Tremblant & could not have enjoyed our drinks & dinner more. Very hospitable, warm energy, & chill vibes. Worth a visit!
Ensconced in a cozy room after a winter ski & drinks in a lively restaurant with a fire in the corner. Come for the restaurant by all means but the stay over will give you a chance to enjoy the honest hospitality of the owners & staff. Plus you get to visit one of the coolest villages in the laurentides.
Very quaint & lovely place to spend the night. The owners were sweet, friendly & went above & beyond for us during our stay. Dinner at the pub was delicious, the drinks were excellent & dessert was a real treat! The free breakfast included with our stay was hearty & comforting on a cold winter morning. We will definitely be back for a stay in the summer!
Delish from start to finish. Impressive amount of attention to detail across the dishes & drinks with quality ingredients used throughout.
Tim was a marvelous host. Will be returning! Appreciate the time & energy 🙏
An Unforgettable Stay at the Mactavern! Already Can't Wait to Return
My partner & I escaped to Val-David for a snowy weekend of relaxation & exploring, & our stay at the Mactavern was nothing short of incredible.
From the moment we arrived, we felt welcomed by the staff. After dropping off our bags, we were greeted by two of the four owners-warm, genuine, & excited to show us around their beautiful (new) space. The location is perfect: just a short walk from the quaint village shops & right in front of the river, whose gentle stream you can hear from the auberge. It's the kind of atmosphere that instantly makes you exhale.
Naturally, we wandered into the restaurant, where the crackling wood oven in the corner set the perfect cozy ambiance & the host offered a warm blanket. It was perfect as the first layer of snow settled outside. Soon after, we were introduced to Mike & Tim, the brother duo & creative forces behind the kitchen (Mike) & the drinks (Tim). Their passion shows in everything they do, this is truly a place for foodies, by foodies.
We began with two hot cider drinks & a crisp lager, which paired beautifully with the perfect fish & chips, flaky, cooked just right, with cold peas that balanced the dish perfectly. As our second courses made their way to the table, I noticed Tim warming our plates on the wood oven. They think of everything, & that care shows in every detail.
Then came the steak & linguine. All we can say is wowwww. The steak was phenomenal, & the peppercorn au jus was honestly the best I've ever had.
From the food to the ambiance to the heartfelt hospitality, the entire experience at the Mactavern was unforgettable. Thank you to the whole team for an exceptional stay. We can't wait to come back.
Best place in the area! The MacTavern makes you feel at home. Drinks are ALL great & the Welsh Rarebit leaves me wordless everytime.
The Scotch egg & the Fish & Chips are also big winners to me.
Definitely worth the stop!
Thanks for a lovely evening! You guys rock & I can't wait to be back to what I value in a pub. Good food, good drinks, good people & good tunes. Have the Welsh rarebit!
While I still have a few days left to my stay, I think it is safe to say this team has done a great job bringing great food, drink, & accommodation to Val-David. ...Oh-- & they have Guinness on tap...
Less than 20 meters from the P'tit Train du Nord trail, access for cycling [or cross-country skiing in the winter] is a breeze.
