The ambiance & decor of this restaurant is quite pleasant & retro-ish. I ordered a burger & a cocktail, both were tasty. Service was also good considering how busy they were on the night we went.
Brunch dates are funny sometimes… because this one almost didn't happen. 😅
We originally started at Larry's, which is only a few minutes from my dance class. The plan was simple: a nice brunch, good conversation, & a relaxing afternoon.
Unfortunately, the experience there was disappointing from the moment we sat down.
My date ordered a coffee. A coffee. Somehow, after almost an hour, it still hadn't arrived. Every time I asked for something, it felt like I was asking for too much. The energy felt off, & the service left a lot to be desired.
The only thing that made it to our table was my Patrón Sour, which was about $20 & honestly the only thing we ended up consuming before deciding to leave.
So we called an Uber & headed to Darling.
Best decision of the day.
The moment we arrived, the atmosphere completely shifted. Darling has this beautiful eclectic aesthetic that blends art deco influences with playful artistic touches throughout the space. Even the bathrooms feel like part of the experience. Each stall features unique artwork, almost like stepping into a tiny gallery. One of them featured a devil-inspired piece that was bold, mischievous, & impossible not to notice. It added personality & charm to a space most restaurants completely overlook.
Now let's talk about the food.
We started with a dozen oysters because if oysters are available during brunch hours, I'm ordering them. Period. Fresh, delicious, & exactly what I was craving.
10/10 for having oysters on the brunch menu.
For my cocktail, I chose a French Martini made with Chambord. It was fruity, smooth, & easy to drink. Not the best French Martini I've ever had, but definitely enjoyable.
Drink rating: 8.5/10 🍸
For brunch, I ordered the Mushroom Benedict.
If you've been running around all day, haven't eaten, & need something comforting, creamy, rich, & filling, this is absolutely the dish to get. The mushrooms were flavorful, the sauce was indulgent without being overwhelming, & every bite felt satisfying.
Dish rating: 9.5/10 🍳
One thing that surprised me was the salad served alongside it. The vinaigrette had a noticeable ginger element that added brightness & depth to the entire dish. Such a small detail, but one that elevated the experience.
& then there's the service.
Alexia took care of our table & she was wonderful. Warm smile, attentive without hovering, positive energy, & genuinely pleasant throughout the entire meal.
Service rating: 10/10 ⭐
I've been to Darling before for dinner & absolutely loved it. This was my first real brunch experience there, & once again they didn't disappoint.
The only thing missing?
My beloved Brussels sprouts.
Looks like I'll have to come back for those.
Overall rating: 9.5/10
Great food.
Great atmosphere.
Great service.
Great date.
Darling continues to be one of my favorite spots in Montreal. ❤?
Incredible place for a date, especially on a Sunday. Been to many a place for a Good Ol Sunday Date & nothing beats this place, especially in Mid-March. Been to many a place for a Good Ol Mid-March date, & nothing beats this one. Have fun:) 😉
Great spot in Montreal for coffee, brunch during the day, & drinks dinner in the evening. Very vibey, great for all occasions, dates, solo drinks & bites at the bar…
This is my favourite bar in Montreal. I've dropped by in varying capacities over the past 8 years (recently on a solo wedding trip) & the staff/ambience are consistently en pointe. Toronto feels like a city of cliques (King W. attracts the usual froufrou crowd, Ossington similarly, etc.), but every charming spot in Montreal has a wonderful blend of everyone: artists, students, 30-somethings, dates, solo diners reading books, parents… it's heartwarming & makes you feel right at home, & one of the reasons I still want to move here. I could look at this space for a long time - lovely plants adorning the entrance, beautiful warm-neon lit carousel centrepiece bar, fun vintage paintings around the emerald wallpapered dining area.
Thanks for always being so welcoming. Stoked to come back soon to check out a Habs game + the patio!
I don't usually eat out because I know how dirty restaurants can be… but that's definitely not the case here.
I was actually hired to unblock some of their drains & inspect the others before St-Jean.
While I was there, I couldn't help but notice how clean the place was-not just the main kitchen area that customers might catch a glimpse of, but the behind-the-scenes kitchen where only staff usually go. Floors spotless, equipment well-kept, everything in order. You can tell the owners care.
After finishing the job, I decided to try the popcorn chicken. & honestly… it was damn delicious. I was tempted to order more but didn't want to completely pig out.
Definitely the kind of place I'd bring a date to in the future-great food, clean, & clearly run properly behind the scenes.
Cause of blockage, vin opener, was amazed to see particularly no grease on it
Good cocktails, wouldn't eat here though. Amazing vibe for a date or a night out with friends
Went there on a Sunday night, the atmosphere - absolutely gorgeous, vintage, aesthetic, chic, a little bit of creep but just about right. Supposed to be a perfect short date, but our bartender that night decided he wouldn't help us achieve it. I could see he was obviously busy, but for a bartender that should not be the excuse to showcase terrific attitude to your customers. Minimum interaction, no eye contact, no trace of a smile, when I waited 10 mins for my wine to be poured after tasting, I thought the message was I had to pour it by myself since the bottle was put in front of me. As long as I touched the bottle, the bartender magically appeared, & instead of talking to me saying "please let me help you with that " or something professional, he made sounds with his lips that meant "no" & treated me like ... a pet? The attitude was above the roof, like he was a big shot & doesn't belong there, asking to be served is bothering him. - I know this is just my interpretation but that's how I felt at the moment, I found this unprofessional for the position he's holding, no matter what personal issues he might be going through, I've never been treated like this by any other bartender. Conclusion - a great place for a date in the evening, just don't sit at the bar, the waitresses work there are professional & friendly.
Beautiful decor, great atmosphere & amazing service. Lovely place to bring a date or even just to grab a few drinks with friends.
