Review Summary

Overall, La Soupiere Malatang earns praise for flavorful, varied malatang with many broth and sauce options, a wide range of fresh ingredients, and reliable, friendly service, plus a free ice cream at the end and a bright, comfortable atmosphere in downtown Montreal; while some diners note that pricing is by weight and can feel a bit higher than comparable places, the breadth of choices and the quality make it a standout for both first timers and regulars.

Really nice experience at La Soupiere Malatang & definitely a place worth trying if you like to do your own meal.

The concept is simple: you grab a bowl, pick whatever ingredients you want, & they cook everything for you afterward. There's honestly a huge selection & everything looked fresh. Lots of choices for meats, fish, vegetables, tofu, noodles, etc. You can also make your own sauce on the side, which is a nice touch.

One thing though: it's very easy to spend way more than expected without realizing it 😅. My honest recommendation is to avoid loading the bowl with heavy items like noodles if you want better value. The fish, meat, & other ingredients are definitely more worth it in my opinion.

For us, the wait was around 20 minutes, which was perfectly fine. If you're with friends or good company, the time goes by quickly anyway.

The place itself was clean, including the bathrooms, which are locked & require a key from the staff.

Overall, good food, fresh ingredients, fun concept, & a nice atmosphere. I'd definitely go back.

Impressed by the wide selection for malatang. I chose the tomato broth, which was rich & comforting, & the sauce bar offered more than enough ingredients to craft a delicious, personalized sauce.

Typical Chinese malatang place. Very similar to big way hotpot but more expensive. They have all sorts of ingredients/selections you can choose from & some very interesting seafood selections.
It's by weight ($4.49/100g) so some cheaper items may cost more than you think. Theres many soup base options to choose from including my personal favourite, the tomato soup base. They also have a sauce bar which includes all your hotpot sauce necessities.
At the end you get a free ice cream but I couldn't finish mine because I was stuffed from the actual meal. Service was good. Would come again but I find myself spending too much at these places, which is a me problem.

Excellent experience at La Soupière Malatang. While the pay-by-weight concept can add up, the portions are generous enough for more than one meal, which balances the value.

The ingredients were fresh, the flavors rich, & the broth especially satisfying. Naomi's service truly elevated the visit-attentive, warm, & thoughtful throughout, even offering a complimentary ice cream & carefully packing my takeaway.

Consistently impressive-always worth returning.

The waitresses weren't very friendly & took a long time to serve us: a friend of mine asked for a fork instead of chopsticks, & the soup went from hot to lukewarm. They should offer a wider selection of noodles. The broth is excellent, & the ingredients (especially the seafood) are very fresh.

Went there with friends. Honestly a bit underwhelming… I took the dry base & it was basically the ingredients I chose boiled with sesame sauce & chili oil thrown on… Not worth the 30+ I paid for. They give free ice cream at the end which is nice.

This was my first time coming here, & the staff were friendly.
However, I was disappointed with the soup. I tried both the mala & the tom yum, & neither of them tasted good. The malatang was bland & lacked the spicy, numbing flavor I was craving (I was really looking forward to it, which is why I decided to come). The tom yum was overly sour. I tried my best to finish the solid ingredients but left the soup. Overall, I'm very disappointed.

Similar to Chinese hotpot, the service is buffet-style with a selection of different soup bases. As someone who typically has a smaller appetite, I appreciated the pricing by weight (approx $4.49/100g). The soup choice is included in the price. The ingredients are quite varied, even for a vegetarian like myself. In fact, for a $35 pot, the serving was already more than plenty. The soup flavour for the #9 Singaporean was creamy & mild spicy. I really enjoyed the experience but I would say the soups are a bit too salty. I'd ask in future to see if this is something that can be modified. The staff were very welcoming & friendly, explaining well the system for a first-time customer. I would return, but with an emptier stomach.

This restaurant delivers an excellent dining experience from start to finish. The menu offers a wide variety of broths, including both mild & spicy options, each well?balanced & aromatic. Ingredient quality is clearly a priority - vegetables were crisp, meats were well?marbled, & seafood tasted fresh. Service was efficient & friendly, with staff checking in regularly without being intrusive. The space is clean, comfortable, & well?ventilated, which makes a big difference. Overall, a reliable & delicious choice for anyone craving a satisfying meal. The unli ice cream is a plus! :) will surely comeback to bring more friends.

There's a small waiting time but you can leave your name & your phone number & the restaurant will send you a message when the table is free. Do take in consideration that you might have to wait close to 30 mins for a table though. The restaurant is pretty small & it's pretty cramped inside. Going in between the tables is quite difficult so it made it a bit less enjoyable. The service was pretty friendly & patient, taking the time to explain to us how it works. The food was tasty as well. I really enjoyable the flavours of the soup, the light spiciness complements the rest of the flavour & the best part is that you can customise all of it. The meal can be different every time you go because you get to pick all the ingredients inside & that makes it so fun. It' only 4.99$ a pound but it does go up quickly so be mindful of that. In the end, it was about 20$ a bowl which is still acceptable for the portion. Especially if you are picking all your favourites.

Soup tastes great & a lot of options, premium ingredients that i dont see often. Signature drink tasted good. Overall slightly more expensive than other similar places.

(If this is your first malatang, I would recommend stopping filling your bowl at around 80% of what you think you should have in your bowl.) Otherwise, the price might go up faster than you expect.

The price is calculated by weight so it comes to 4,49$ / 100g for ingredients of your choice. The sauce bar, the broth & the ice cream are included in the total price. Would really recommend !

A nice spot for malatang in downtown Montreal. It's $4.49 per 100g. There's a wide variety of ingredients to choose from, all organized neatly, & the space is spacious with plenty of natural light. Service was friendly & efficient. We went with the malatang broth & regular bone broth - the bone broth on its own was a bit salty & one-dimensional, but paired with the malatang base it worked well.
