Service was average (the guy told us three times to leave before closure time). Also, it was cold in the place. They don't heat enough & we were not really comfortable from start to finish. However, the coffee & pastries were great.
The food is great, baked goods top notch.
But the lack of efficiency in the staff there is astounding. I was there picking up coffee & croissant & waited 30min, & just watching them operate, sigh. Don't go there if you're in a rush, but do go if you have time to kill & the patience.
On a rather quiet road with a warm atmosphere & good pastries. I loved the pistachio éclair, but unfortunately didn't get anything else. They serve matcha, coffee, bread & sandwiches. On the side they have a little fridge for canned drinks like Loop.
just went by this morning at 8am
found out only once there, their kitchen doesn't open until 9am
a bit strange for a bakery place
ended up just grabbing a coffee & a croissant
Pretty bad service. Ordered pastries. Get coffee after 5min. Then wait another 10min for someone to put a croissant on a plate to bring to you. I could also see it waiting on the counter for 10min before I went to ask. The girl behind the counter can literally plate it for you as you request it. What a bad system. Employees look unhappy & stressed.
Reviewing the croissant & the atmosphere only:
Croissant lacked cooking time in my opinion. It was barely browned on top & lacked the crunchy I'd be looking for. Tasted good otherwise but texture was not there for me.
Very good atmosphere to get coffee/brunch with an old friend to catch up.
I would come back to try their sandwiches & other pastries.
Unfortunately good coffee but staff make it the way the want which ruin the taste of the coffee. I asked for a small cappuccino they gave me large, i had to pay more plus the coffee was diluted!!
They're pretty busy on the weekends, so there's a little bit of a line to order (for pastries & food/drinks) & a wait. I got a cappuccino, canelé, & the chocolate chip cookie.
Cappuccino: It was good, but nothing really special.
Canelé: It had amazing flavor, the rum really comes through. The inside was custardy & spongy, the tops & bottoms were nice & crunchy, but the sides were a bit chewy & gummy. Overall, a really good canelé.
Cookie: Also really good, filled with chocolate chips but not overly so. It had a really nice butter flavor & was crispy outside, but it's a drier cookie than I'd prefer.
I'd come back for their pastries, but wouldn't go out of my way just for their coffee.
This is a mediocre bakery with nice atmosphere. Breakfast sandwich was good but other than that it was difficult to find one special item. Croissants were OK but no where close to Automne Boulangerie. Coffee (Americano) was one of the worst I had for years. Overall not impressed with La Bete a Pain.
They were great few years ago until they started changing back & forth the menu & the way they service people. For some reason the last 3 times I tried to give it another shot was a disaster. Also $5.30 for a filtered coffee? lool Food: 2/10 (meh) Service: 1/10 (Waiters are rude, late & slow) Atmosphere: 2/10
Best baked good & coffee, but stay clear from their foods in their fridge! I took the eggplant lasagna, which had no sauce, barely any cheese & it was just pasta. The lox salmon salad was a huge bed of split peas & half of a hard boiled egg! So stick to their coffee & baked goods only, & it should be fine!
A truly don't understand how this is anything more than the most overrated bakery in the city. I give 2 starts instead of 1 because the service was excellent Pastries were bland & TINY Coffee tastes like mud Prices are 50% higher than the average in the city It's in Griffintown which is the most overrated part of the city anyway ... terribly dissappointed
High class confectionery Excellent coffee Delicious & healthy special breads
Nice little place hidden inside a furniture store. There is access from the street but you have to guess where to go... Good coffees, nice crowd.
Coffee & croissants are great. I wish I read reviews before ordering the banh mi though. It smelled badly & it was not tasting good, not worth $17 at all.
