Highly recommend the Elvis which comes with a generous portion of meat.
On a slightly negative note, my girlfriend got the classic poutine which was mostly just fries. For some reason there was only a small amount of gravy & cheese curds in the very middle.
Place was very busy so I'm going to assume this was simply a rare mistake.
Still enjoyed the food, it's a classic poutine spot, but it's by no means the best you can find.
Truely incredible experience. The poutine is legit. Gravy is full of flavor. Cheese curds are fresh & squeaky. Fries are absolutely perfect & loved seeing the buckets of prepped potatoes waiting to be fried! Might be the best poutine I've had.
La Banquise is an absolute must?visit in Montreal
La Banquise delivered exactly what we came for: legendary poutine & a fun, lively vibe. I went for the smoked meat poutine - L'Obélix - & it was outstanding. Perfect fries, rich gravy, plenty of cheese curds, & that smoky, tender meat on top took it over the edge.
My brother ordered La Elvis, which was loaded, indulgent, & exactly the kind of over?the?top poutine you hope it will be. Our niece kept it classic with La Classique, & even the simplest version was spot?on. When a place nails the basics, you know the rest is going to be great.
They also have a surprisingly good craft beer selection, which paired perfectly with the food & the atmosphere.
If you're in Montreal & craving poutine - whether you want traditional or something wild - La Banquise absolutely lives up to the hype. I'd go back in a heartbeat.
I'm a vegetarian & was happy to learn their baseline plain poutine is vegetarian! (They use vegetarian gravy!) But what makes this place is all the varieties of poutine you can get. Several vegetarian options too! I LOVED this Mexican style poutine, with sour cream & guacamole & tomatoes.. it was like poutine nachos. Worth the wait outside (the line moves pretty fast!)
There was a line up out the door & down the street at 2:15pm today - impressive.
When we were seated (you will be seated when your whole party is present) there as nothing empty chair. - impressive
Poutine choices - amazing,mouthwatering - impressive
& then the much anticipated food arrives- looks impressive.
Burgers were lukewarm & the poutine (fries, cheese, gravy,…) cold! - not impressive!
(Cheese still almost frozen)
Meh.
La Banquise is where most poutine journeys begin, & for good reason. It's Montreal's most famous spot, an institution known for its dizzying array of takes on the classic Quebecois dish. While the menu spans everything from'Elvis' to'La Obélix,' there's an undeniable pleasure in sticking to the original: perfectly crisp, golden fries, squeaky fresh cheese curds, & a rich, savory brown gravy.
Admittedly, for a seasoned poutine connoisseur, La Banquise might feel a little like a tourist rite of passage-there are indeed hidden gems across the city offering arguably'better' versions. However, this vibrant, 24-hour spot is the perfect, delicious introduction for the poutine novice. It sets the standard & provides the ideal starting point before you level up to the more refined competition. Go for the classic, savor the experience, & let the curd life begin!
It's not worth waiting in the cold for this. There are other similar places. The smoked meat topping tasted good, but the fries, cheese, & gravy were just average. You can't even wait inside for takeout - they have a bad attitude & ask people to wait out on the street. The server at the door had such an arrogant attitude, like they're doing you a favor just by serving you. Very ridiculous.
Remember to ask for utensils. They don't provide for takeouts
Tried out La Banquise after hearing all the hype about it being a Montréal must-visit spot for poutine. I went in with high expectations but honestly, the meal was just… okay. I ordered the'La Frites Rex' & their classic poutine-both were edible, but neither really wowed me. The fries were fine, the gravy was salty without much depth, & the cheese curds didn't have that squeaky freshness I was looking for.
It wasn't terrible, just very average-something I'd rate around a 7/10 or 3 stars. For the amount of hype this place gets, I couldn't help but feel it was overrated. Maybe it's more about the late-night atmosphere or the sheer number of topping options than the actual quality of the food.
Would I go back? Probably not anytime soon. There's better poutine to be found in Montréal if you're chasing flavour over novelty.
The poutine here is incredible. They are not shy with the cheese or gravy.
We ordered the guacamole poutine & the spicy meat poutine. Both were delicious & very filling, so be sure to order your portions right. The cheese & gravy was definitely something different, & the poutine itself was delicious. This place really shows how poutine is done properly-like an actual meal. It's surprising they're open 24/7, but I definitely recommend the food. The atmosphere was unique too, with beautiful art styles on each table & a very tourist-friendly vibe.
The classic poutine wi the Montreal smoke meat was the best I've had! We also tried a Mexican approach with guacamole which was surprisingly delicious as well. If you're not a fan of gravy on fries, definitely try the one with guacamole (forgot the name). Can't wait to go back!
Service is friendly & the atmosphere is very cozy. There was a line upon entering but it moved very fast & we were seated within 5-10 minutes. I ordered the classic poutine & it was just alright. The fries were good but the gravy was quite watery & unfavourable & there wasn't quite enough cheese curds for my liking. Not a terrible meal but any means & decently priced just expected a bit more from such a classic establishment.
La Banquise is the best poutine spot in all of North America. There's just nothing quite like it. There's a wide selection of different poutine's to try, but just the original classic poutine on its own is SO GOOD. It may even concert a poutine hater to a poutine lover. Now I know what you're thinking, "It's just fries with cheese & gravy on top. How good could it be?" Well it's pretty darn good because we have kept coming back time after time on our visits to Montreal & we're from Toronto. I've attached pictures & videos of our visit on two separate occasions, one year apart. Here's something you have to know: you will have to wait & it will be crowded. There are so many people that want to try this poutine & come back because it is quite literally world famous so there's always a line out front. Also, once you get inside, it is a pretty small restaurant, but there are many tables that are very closely placed together so you might feel a little bit cramped. However, the service is quick because they need to be to accommodate all the people constantly coming in & out, & they're pretty helpful at helping you choose what you might like. We recommend the classic poutine & La Royale. We also heard that a lot of locals prefer the poutine across the street at La Poule Mouillée but we realized they only serve one type of poutine there so we chose to try a well-known & widely popular restaurant instead, & we're glad that we did. It lives up to the hype & you have to try it the next time you're in Montreal.
One of the most popular poutine spots in Montreal. We tried the classique poutine, but found the gravy a bit too salty & the overall dish wasn't anything special-it felt a bit overrated. We went on Christmas Eve morning, & the atmosphere was warm & cozy. The restaurant is on a charming street, & the service was great-everyone was friendly. I wouldn't recommend coming just for the poutine (the menu is quite diverse, so it's worth trying other dishes & enjoying the small-town vibe.
Excellent poutine! They have a variety of toppings. I was expecting more fries than toppings, but it was the opposite! I had the pulled pork with bacon & apples. It was loaded with gravy & curds throughout the dish. Absolutely delicious!
One of our favourite spots for poutine in Montreal. Can't miss the Classique, the cheese curds were a perfect mix of squeaky & creamy & the gravy & frites are
Definitely worth the hype! Been wanting to come here for many years. When me & my husband planned our trip throughout eastern Canada we knew we had to come here when in Montréal! Staff is bilingual, had no problem speaking English. Very attentive, fun vibe/atmosphere. A bit cramped for space, but I feel that just added to it. I ordered La Festival, & I've gotta say that was one of the best meals I've ever had. Everything came together perfectly, even though when you see the item on the menu, you wonder how in the heck can that taste good - trust me, it does! Fries were not soggy or too salty. Ground beef wasn't too greasy & the gravy was perfect. The cheese curds were perfection. Merci, beaucoup amour! 🩷
La Banquise is a must-visit for anyone in Montreal who has a passion for poutine. Famous for its extensive variety of this beloved Quebecois dish, I had heard a lot about it, & my first visit certainly lived up to the hype. When we arrived, I was initially intimidated by the long line stretching outside the restaurant. It was a sunny day, & we had just finished a lengthy walk through the Montreal area, so the prospect of waiting wasn't exactly thrilling. However, to my pleasant surprise, we were seated much faster than I had anticipated. Despite the crowd, the staff worked efficiently, & we were settled into our seats in no time. We ordered the'La Taquise' & the'La Classique', two of their poutine offerings. The'La Taquise' brought a delicious twist with its addition of guacamole & sour cream, while the'La Classique' stayed true to the roots with its simple, yet incredibly satisfying combination of fries, gravy, & cheese curds. The gravy was rich & savory, the fries perfectly crispy, & the cheese curds squeaked just the right amount. It's no exaggeration to say that their poutine is to die for. Every bite was indulgent, comforting, & packed with flavor. The overall experience was fantastic, & for my first visit, I'm already looking forward to many more this year. La Banquise lives up to its reputation, offering a quintessential Montreal poutine experience in a casual, lively setting. Whether you're a local or a visitor, it's a spot you don't want to miss!
I had the La Veggie Reggie poutine, & it was fantastic. The fries were crispy, the gravy was tasty, & the cheese curds were perfect. This poutine is definitely worth trying. It's one of the best I've ever had!
I heard this place has a reputation for poutines & people all over come for their food. For once, I decided to come. Meh ! That's it... It's , ok -ish... The potatoes were not good, the toppings where (cheese & gravy was excellent) but most of the food is the potatoes. It tastes like burned oil. I personally wasn't impressed but if you have NOTHING else to eat & you are in the area, why not. The waitresses were the nicest part, they were very sweet, but they came twice, once for the food & the other to collect. So not a huge fuss there either. Maybe it was a one off, MAYBE? But I wouldn't go back to try & find parking in that mess of an area (with all the closed streets & construction) & pay 3 times the price of a poutine just to "TRY".
