La Banquise, une petite crémerie à ses débuts, a vu le jour en mai 1968. Son fondateur, Pierre Barsalou, un pompier du quartier, transforma celle-ci en casse-croûte ouvert 24H dès l’automne 1968. On pouvait alors y déguster d’excellents hot-dogs et des frites succulentes. La poutine fit son apparition au début des années 80, avec la poutine classique et l’italienne. Devant le succès populaire, et à la demande répétée de plusieurs clients, les choix de poutines se multiplient. On compte maintenant pas moins de 25 poutines différentes. La Banquise est encore aujourd’hui une entreprise familiale. La fille cadette de M. Barsalou, Annie, a pris la relève dans les années 90, en compagnie de Marc Latendresse, son conjoint. Ils continuent ensemble de perpétuer la tradition de qualité et la renommée du Restaurant La Banquise. À l’été 2006, La Banquise fait d’importantes rénovations et agrandi considérablement sa salle à manger. Une quarantaine d’années plus tard, La Banquise est devenu bien plus qu’un simple casse-croûte ou une «place à poutine». Il s’agit également d’un endroit convivial et chaleureux où l’on peut déguster des bières de micro-brasserie, un menu du jour complet ainsi que d’excellents déjeuners. Merci beaucoup à notre fidèle clientèle, les oiseaux de nuit, les groupes d’amis, en passant par les travailleurs, les étudiants, les petites familles, etc... d’avoir façonné à votre image, l’histoire de La Banquise et d’en avoir fait le succès actuel.
A La Banquise, les amateurs de poutine découvrent une gamme légendaire de garnitures, du classique au plus audacieux, empilées sur des frites croustillantes avec des fromages en grains qui grincent et une sauce savoureuse. Portions généreuses et ambiance animée et accueillante font de cet endroit une valeur sûre pour partager ou pour une bouchée copieuse en solo, avec des options du traditionnel au poutine spécialisé audacieux et même des horaires tardifs. La file peut être longue mais l'équipe est sympathique et efficace, ce qui maintient l'énergie et rend l'expérience mémorable à Montréal. Une vraie institution montréalaine, elle livre une nourriture réconfortante et délicieuse qui comble les envies, surtout après une journée à explorer.
I had the La Veggie Reggie poutine, & it was fantastic. The fries were crispy, the gravy was tasty, & the cheese curds were perfect. This poutine is definitely worth trying. It's one of the best I've ever had!
La Banquise has the most delicious poutine we've ever tried! It's great that the place is open 24 hours, but it's almost always busy, so we arrived early in the morning for breakfast. The environment was nicely decorated, with a huge window for natural sunlight. The portions were so big we couldn't believe our eyes. The servers were really friendly & welcoming. It gets a bit noisy as more guests start to come in, which was expected. We'll definitely be back if we have a chance to visit Montreal again :)

The poutines here are exceptional, & the takeout service is excellent. Due to the high demand & long lines, we opted for takeout, which was a convenient & efficient experience. The gentleman at the takeout counter was very friendly, funny & accommodating.
Holy smokes what a great place! The food was too much for me to eat but I'll finish it on the next shift! Thanks to the friendly staff who can keep a smile despite the busy & full restaurant! Definitely a must go-to if in Montreal! Update: The food was great on the second shift. Still remains a must go-to for me when in Montreal.
Per the guide the best place to get poutine. When you get to the restaurant there are two lines. On the left is takeout. On the right is for guests that want to be seated. The wait was not long. We were seated fairly quickly. The poutine was yummy but definitely had to share. It's a huge plate of fries drenched in gravy & curd cheese. Add whatever variety of toppings you need.. you can't come to Montreal & not try a poutine.
The poutine was just ok. There was an issue getting a large poutine. Over half an hour wait. The ticketing system was down. The wait service were very friendly.
Fabulous. Cheerful environment. Friendly staff. Will likely set your gold standard for poutine. Revisit La Banquise every time I visit Montreal. It's a force of nature. There aren't many restaurants that are this flat out joyous.
La Banquise is a poutine lover's paradise! The variety & quality of poutine options are outstanding, with generous portions & delicious flavors. The vibrant atmosphere & friendly staff make for a great dining experience. A must-visit spot in Montreal!
La Banquise is worth every minute of waiting in line. For a party of two, we waited about 30 minutes for a 1:00 PM lunch, but the line moved quickly, especially for small groups. The atmosphere inside is a bit chaotic, but the tempting aroma makes it all worthwhile. We ordered the Banquise Burger & upgraded our fries to poutine. I chose the La Couvre-Feu poutine, & it was absolutely delicious. The portions were generous-so much so that I couldn't finish mine, but every bite was incredible! The picture truly says it all.

we were immediately seated as we entered & we were a group of 6 people. we ordered 3 poutines to share & all came in very big plates & tasted delicious! the staff was also very friendly & spoke both french & english. on the other hand, we visited during mid october & the entire place was very crowded on a thursday lunch, it kind of felt suffocating & sweaty. the windows were closed & it was very hot. this would've gotten a 5-stars if there was some kind of ventilation inside. overall, a very pleasant visit!

This place is fantastic the poutine is the best I ever had , I've tried about 5 different flavours, types of poutine & they were all soooo good really yummy 😋. The staff is super friendly & attentive to the costumers I tried a burger the last time I was there & it was yummy 🍔. I always go there when I visit Montreal 🚗

My friend came to me & told me that I can't come to Montreal & not try Poutine. She brought me to this place, it was great, we went around 8pm & it was crazy crowded, there was a queue even outside, & when we finished around 10pm it was still crowded & there was a bigger queue outside.
The social media hype about this place is way too much. Everyone claims to make La Banquise a must visit place for world class poutine in Montreal, but tbh for us it did not live up to all that hype & expectation. May be because i'm not a huge fan of oily food & fries galore, but to be fair, the portion size was huge for a'regular', service & ambience exemplary. Be prepared for a line up outside the restaurant to get inside, as there's no reservation system (online or offline)
Amazing tasty food! Unbelievable!! I tried regular their classic poutine & vegetables poutine. Really enjoyed the food & very happy. Came all the way from Toronto, & it was a great experience. Customer service was very friendly & helpful.
The fries were good. They have vegan cheese option, which is amazing. But the gravy wasn't enough or hot enough. It didn't even melt the cheese! The smoked meat & sausage toppings were really good. But the breaded chicken tasted like stale frozen chicken tenders.
I could've sworn I left a review explaining to the world that THIS IS THE BEST POUTINE PLACE in the world, it's not debatable & don't even try to. I've recommended this place to many friends/family who have & haven't had poutine in their lives, & they all say "that was awesome" after coming here. Seriously eating here is a special event & something to be cherished.
