Review Summary

Reviewers consistently praise Kan Bei for fresh, flavorful Sichuan dishes and generous portions, with highlights such as mapo tofu, fish soup, green beans with pork, twice cooked pork, dan dan noodles, and crispy noodles with shrimp, all offering bold, well balanced flavors that feel authentic and not overly greasy; the menu and lunch specials are well received, and service is repeatedly described as friendly, efficient and quick, contributing to a warm, lively downtown dining atmosphere that many call among the best Chinese options in Montreal; while a few diners mention smaller plate sizes compared to expectations, occasional oiliness or sweetness in some dishes, and occasional lunch service hiccups, the overall sentiment is strongly positive and there are frequent intentions to return and to recommend Kan Bei.

I really love this place. Best Chinese spot in downtown Montreal. & it's accessible no matter your palate for Chinese. If you're just a General Tao's chicken kind of person- it's good here. If you're looking for some authentic Chinese flavor- you can find that here too. Personally I love the salt & pepper fried shrimp & cumin beef, amazing flavors. Family run & everything made piping hot to order. Best pregame or preconcert secret while everyone else seems to be at La Cage or La Belle & La Boeuf!

Delicious northern Chinese cuisine!

The sautéed cabbage is the best I have ever tasted when dining at a northern chinese restaurant. The salty, sweet, spicy, & sour flavors were perfectly balanced.

We ate at this restaurant three times already & it has been consistently good!

We ordered spicy cold tofu, sautéed cabbage, green beans with pork, beef chow mein with black bean sauce, spicy deep fried chicken.

Highly recommend trying this restaurant. We will be back when we come to Montreal again.

Food was very good, better quality than several places I've been to. Good service, the general Tau chicken was a great big portion, not just 5 or 6 pieces with a pile of rice & the wonton soup was just what wonton soup should be. Yum! Good service, nice place, affordable.

One of the very best Sichuan restaurant! We have been eating there for many years. Very friendly staff. Can't wait to have spicy fried chicken (with bones) & hot pop spicy cabbage with shrimps at the new location.

Best Sichuan restaurant I've tried so far in Montreal. I recommend you try the spicy fried chicken with bone, the lotus roots & the spicy fish.

Came to Montreal on holidays but craving for Chinese food. The Sichuan dishes here lack of Mala flavor (numbing & spicy flavor) but I guess it's adapted to local taste. Although not completed satisfied, it did give some sort of comfort to my cravings. Service here is slow & not excellent. Also they have two types of La Zi Ji ( spicy chili chicken) which I haven't never seen in any restaurants, one with bones & the other without bones. The one without bones is actually not authentic at all, it's just fried chicken with some chills, more catered for westerns. The one with bones? My advice is not to have La Zi Ji with bones as most authentic La Zi Ji dishes don't come with bones.

Kan bei is THE BEST chinese restaurant I've been to in the one year that I've been living in Montreal. we ordered the chicken fried rice (#809) beef with satay sauce (#315) stir fried shrimps, spring roles & shrimp soup. All of them were absolutely delicious. Will definitely visit again. If you're looking for good portions, great prices, & a succulent chinese meal, Kan bei is the right place for you.

Small restaurant but lots of space & large tables. Very clean. Service was fast, attentive & friendly, food is cooked to order & served quickly. We had the fried pork spare ribs, general Tsao chicken, baby bok Choy with garlic, shrimp fried rice & shrimp wonton soup. The soup was very nice, with a delicate broth & generous wonton & bok Choy. Both main meat dishes were amazing with lovely seasoning. The garlic bok Choy just went WOW it was that good. The rice was very nice & cooked to perfection.
