Had to try the iconic Joe Beef while in Montreal. Made resos well ahead to make sure we got the time slot desired. We were shown to our table. The dining area is sneaky large as there are lots of tables in various areas around the restaurant & also a bar counter area. The tables are very close together so it feels tight & gets very noisy as the restaurant is full.
Our server, Julien, did a great job in explaining the menu & offered up good choices in wine pairings for the food. We chose the beef tartare with bone marrow toast, smoked meat terrine, duck breast with duck sausage, & the halibut (fish of the day), & a side of asparagus. For dessert we shared the marjolaine cake. All the dishes were nicely plated & very tasty.
Oysters 5/5 - The bully oysters were outstanding - the most fresh, juicy, plump oysters we've ever tasted. The sauces - cocktail, mignonette, picked horseradish were all great & homemade. Their hot sauce was just good.
Croquette 3/5 - Just your ordinary croquette. The smoked sturgeon was a nice touch, but if we ate this at a local buffet, we wouldn't be surprised.
Escargot soup 5/5 - This is our first time having escargot. The Appalachian soup was smooth & creamy, while not being heavy. The escargot was slightly saltier & provided the perfect chew. The meat was tender & juicy.
Fluke 5/5 - The fluke came basked in a cream sauce with fennel oil alongside a slice of caramelized fennel. The meat came tender, as it was barely cooked. We could tell it had been poached lightly given how well the flavour of the fish had been retained. The fennel provided a striking counterpoint to the fishes gentle flavour.
Veal 4/5 - The veal was crisp, with a soft, fatty interior. The sauce was TO DIE for. So creamy, flavourful & just damn meaty. The turnips were also divine, & treated with the utmost respect. The only component of this dish that gave us pause was the offal. We aren't used to eating sweat breads & liver, so we were a little overwhelmed by the taste. It wasn't bad by any means - there was just a lot of it.
Duck 5/5 - This was our favourite dish of the night, for many reasons. The potato wedges seemed like an afterthought, but they were literally the best chips we have had in our entire lives. They were crispy beyond belief, & super fluffy on the inside. Perfectly seasoned as well in their special sauce. The duck was also perfectly cooked. The crispy skin was covered in an orange sauce made from wine & foie gras. The liver gave the sauce an incredible body that really brought everything together. The only criticism of this dish was that our piece of duck had a line of tendon in it, making some pieces slightly chewier than the others.
Overall: Excellent, hearty food. You should go out of your way to eat here, especially if you enjoy meat or seafood. Get the chips.
It's been 8 years since I've eaten here last. I was very excited to be back, but was pretty disappointed when we left.
Food was fine, although our steak had tons of connective trimmings that made it a bit difficult to eat.
Service was awful. Very pushy. When asked for recommendations the server was very aggressive about recommending based on highest price tag. He was not happy when we ordered a $50 bottle of wine & made service feel a bit awkward because of that.
We were missing food from our order. Received the wrong foie gras that contained allergens we were transparent about having & needing to avoid.
I think if you are going to be aggressive with upselling customers you need to at least provide the quality of service that deserves that price tag, & the subsequent tip this server was so desperate for.
I would consider somewhere else, this place has lost its way.
The restaurant is super cute! The appetizers were a little mid, but the entrées were absolutely delicious - honestly some of the best steak I've had.
With that said, the consistency in service was lacking. We saw servers taking shots with guests at the table next to us, & at one point we also saw the chef outside drinking wine with guests. While that atmosphere can definitely be fun & adds to the vibe, it seemed to impact the flow of service because our food ended up taking over two hours to come out - & when it finally arrived, it was cold.
I completely understand it was a busy weekend, especially with Grand Prix crowds, but consistency is key. If staff has time to socialize & drink with guests, the kitchen & service timing should still remain a priority for the rest of the restaurant. Great food & a fun atmosphere can absolutely coexist - but service still has to feel organized & consistent.
We were very anxious to dine @Joe Beef & the meal did not disappoint- only negative comment is that the hostess swooped up our wine glass off the table - as she did this she didn't acknowledge us in any way - I am sure that I still had a sip left in my glass - she did this three different times without a word to us or glancing at us which we were left feeling insignificant on many levels. Our server & the food were everything we could have expected from this sought out restaurant in Montreal. I would hope that management would have a word with her after this review. It's important as a customer to feel acknowledged.
This place is next level. Good music. Happy servers. Incredible food. Great wine recs. Special place to go to celebrate for sure. If you're thinking about going, just go, you won't regret it.
Went to Joe Beef for a dinner for 4 on 04/04/2026.
Food: the lobster pasta was a standout, as was the duck. The fries are a must! The tartare & shrimp cocktail were excellent appetizers. The beef faded into the background to be honest!
Service: we loved the sommelier! He had a great white wine suggestion, & was very thoughtful in suggesting a rose instead of a red (we had 2 red wine haters on the table!). Without him, we wouldn't have ordered a second bottle - a real testament to his charm & skill! He was very attentive - I noticed something in my glass (perhaps some sediment from my wine?) & he immediately replaced it, without even being asked - he was clearly paying attention to the table! A tablemate found her drink too strong & the sommelier/waiter took finding her a delicious alternative very seriously (without charging for the first drink!).
Plates & cutlery were changed between courses, which was so appreciated. Overall, the service added to the experience - we wanted to order more food & drink because we felt so welcomed!
Atmosphere: busy, warm, & comfortable.
Overall, it's worth a stop in Montreal. The warm, attentive service makes you feel welcomed & happy, the food is just wonderful. You get the bill & truly feel that it was money well spent - a rare experience these days!
This restaurant has been on my bucket list for a long time, & I'm truly happy that I finally got to experience it for the first time. The hype & expectations were incredibly high going in, but somehow it still managed to exceed them.
From the moment we arrived, the service was absolutely top-notch. Our server was professional, attentive, & extremely knowledgeable-not only about the menu, but also about the wine pairings, which really elevated the whole dining experience.
We started with the beef tendon salad, & it was unbelievably good. It was the perfect appetizer to begin the meal-flavorful, well-balanced, & something quite memorable.
For the mains, we had the duck with foie gras, skirt steak, dry-aged rib eye steak, fries, & skate fish. Honestly, everything we ordered was outstanding. Each dish was cooked beautifully & packed with flavor, making it clear why this place has such a strong reputation.
I was initially a little intimidated by the price, but in the end it came to just a little over $100 per person for four of us, & the amount of food was more than enough. Considering the quality, portions, & overall experience, it felt absolutely worth it.
Without a doubt, this is a place I would return to.
This was our first time in Montréal & we had a fabulous time. This was the best meal of our trip by far & probably one of if not the best meal we have ever had. The food was incredible, the côte de boeuf was to die for & our waiter was so kind & has the best wine pairing suggestions. The atmosphere was so lovely & we enjoyed ourselves thoroughly. Thank you Joe beef! We will definitely be going back.
