Gyu-Kaku has always been one of my go-to BBQ spots in San Francisco-especially for their unlimited BBQ options. It's a place I've visited countless times with family, & I've always loved the experience. So when I found out they had a location in Montreal, I was genuinely excited to try it & even brought along a friend who had never been before. I really wanted him to experience how good it can be.
Unfortunately, from the very beginning, the experience felt completely different. The service was noticeably lacking-it took multiple attempts just to get the staff's attention for basic things, which already set the tone for the evening.
I went ahead & ordered my usual favorite items, but the portions here seemed smaller or different compared to what I'm used to in San Francisco. I understand there could be differences in sourcing or pricing, so I was willing to give that the benefit of the doubt. However, what was harder to overlook was the quality of certain cuts-especially the yaki shabu beef. It was so thin & inconsistent that it felt almost like minced meat, & a lot of it kept falling through the grill, making it frustrating to cook & enjoy.
On top of that, the grill itself wasn't functioning properly. The heat distribution was uneven-some parts would burn the meat instantly while others barely cooked it, leaving pieces raw. For a place centered around BBQ, this really impacted the overall experience.
It honestly felt like a completely different restaurant compared to the San Francisco locations I'm used to, which was disappointing-especially since I had hyped it up to my friend.
If I had to highlight one positive, it would be the lava cake. It was actually better than the one I've had in San Francisco-rich, warm, & perfectly done. But realistically, you don't go to a BBQ restaurant just for dessert.
Overall, I'm quite disappointed to say that this visit didn't live up to my expectations, & it's not a spot I'd return to in Montreal the way I do back in San Francisco.
The food was amazing & the service was excellent. The combo for four people was the perfect amount, just enough to be satisfied. We also added a bottle of excellent sake & some outstanding wagyu beef. Great experience! 100% recommand this place!
The Montreal Gyu-Kaku location is a 10/10 dining experience. Comfortable seating, polite waiters, fantastic beef/pork quality, & welcoming interior.
I would recommend dining in for the lunch menu; It's the most sufficient money-wise & you receive more than enough food.
After a year, I finally ate again at my favorite Japanese restaurant. It still feels the same as the first time I came here. I ordered the spicy pork & beef yaki shabu, still my top choice. The flavor hits right every time.
The staff are polite & attentive. The music fits the mood & adds to the vibe. The place feels comfortable & familiar.
One funny downside. This place reminds me of someone who introduced it to me & is no longer part of my life. That said, no regrets. The food & the experience stay solid.
Overall, a great visit. A must try.
Service was excellent. Server was quick & considerate (he asked if we wanted tea when we arrived because it was cold outside, & offered menu suggestions) - sorry I wish I caught your name!
Food was decent, beef was very good - the cheaper marinated cuts were actually best. Chicken we found was a bit lacking flavor & takoyaki was just so-so, meat piece inside was a good size but dough on the inside was quite mushy & didnt taste the greatest (might just be preference).
Overall service & marinated beef were good, so we would come back again - just note you need to call ahead/reserve most days to be guaranteed a table. (Umakara - the marinated one with sweet sauce was very good as a side note)
🙂
Really good Japanese barbecue!
Add on. Went back today. Really good food for the price. Less than 20$ & I had Toro beef plus some chicken.
Excellent Service. Fast services & the waiters & waitresses are very friendly. the food was very good & a lot of choices of meats. But You should tried is the BEEF TATAKI it`s a must!! it`s the one of my favorite restaurant.
Great service from Gia & Alden & many choices on the menu. Try the beef nigiri, beef sukiyaki, crispy imperial rolls, garlic edamame, beef short rib & miso salmon. Tried the garlic clams for the first time & was impressed with the flavours & broth that came with it.
I had a great experience, especially thanks to Andy, who was truly an attentive & thoughtful waiter. I particularly enjoyed their beef dishes & the salad both were absolutely delicious & stood out the most for me. The only items that didn't quite match my personal taste were the miso soup & the spicy shrimp, but that simply came down to individual preference rather than quality. Overall, it was a very satisfying meal & excellent service.
Go their for their lunch combo. $20 for 3 meats to grill, a salad & miso soup. Really good value for the quality of meat. The angus beef rib was the best. The other two meats I got were cut badly, with some small & broken pieces (small enough to barely fit on the grill). But for the price, it wasn't a big deal.
The service was also attentive & friendly. They checked on us throughout the meal, & changed the grill for us without prompting.
Our table also ordered the ramen & that's a skip. Not very good.
Got the lunch Combo. Very good deal.
Other than the angus beef, the non-upgrade meat sucked because they were all so thinly sliced that they were falling apart on the grill.
Also liked the sweet soy marinade compared to the spicy miso.
Excellent Japanese BBQ spot! Meet choices were all delicious especially the different beef cuts. Fast & friendly service as well.
Updated review 2024: What used to be the best Japanese BBQ in Montreal is changing. As a regular at Gyu-Kaku, visiting about 30 times a year, here's my review. The quality of the meat is not what it used to be. On November 2nd, the prime kalbi was awful - it wasn't the beautiful marbled slices shown in the menu image & what we usually receive. The pork was only fat, with no meat at all. Of course, we expect some fat on pork slices, but not just fat. The filet mignon seemed to have soaked in a previously used, unwashed plate that might have held seafood. The harami beef isn't what it used to be either: we often encounter big nerves in the meat. The portions of kimchi have also become tiny. In addition, the service is no longer of the same quality. Employees no longer greet us in Japanese when we arrive or leave. The service is slower than before, & it seems to be simply because they are understaffed. The servers are kind & doing their best - it's clear the issue seems to come from management. In short, many things have changed. Each time, we go back thinking it was just bad luck, but at this point, despite our 3,000 points in the app, we'll need to opt for a BBQ spot where the meat is quality, like Korean BBQ Daldongnae, just down the street. We miss our old Gyu Kaku experience. 😩 Previous review: Best Japanese BBQ in town! Authentic! You go to Gyu Kaku in Tokyo & it's ALMOST the same except for the wagyu meat obviously.
The lunch special is so worth it! I like the toro beef & spicy pork a lot. Although there is a bit slow but staffs are all very friendly
The food here is good although the ramen bowls were sub-par. I have the spicy beef ramen & it was so flavorless & not spicy
Good beef... many options... good Value - Price balance... Good service.
Super Nice, Friendly Staff & very accommodating to allergies ..gives a different salad dressing. Allows us to get 2 beef than the chicken for kids meal. Servers are always around, don't need to flag them down & Super Tasty
Thank you Ema for the awesome lunch!! She recommended the Gah Umakara beef with rice meal, absolutely amazing 🤤. Very friendly, & honest! Takeout was sub $20 & I couldn't finish the whole meal in one sitting. Super impressed.
Came here with my friends to celebrate my birthday & I really enjoyed it! We got the 6 person course menu which made it so much easier since we didn't have to pick anything, they just brought out the food to us & it kept coming. I wasn't prepared for the amount of food they served. Every service, I thought "surely this is the last one" & it wasn't! It's not all you can eat but it will feel like it. Got to try such a great variety of pork, beef, shrimp, dumplings, vegetables, salad, torched sushi, & more! Everything was delicious & we all had enough to eat. My favourites were the Edamame & Gyu-Sushi entree, the short rib, the filet mignon, the premium sirloin, the Yaki-Shabu beef, & the s'mores for dessert! The food is flavourful & tasty, the meats are well seasoned, The sauces on the side compliment everything really well (Sweet, soy, & spicy). Both sides of the table got food so no awkward reaching across to get a taste of everything. The service was very good as well! Very considerate & attentive, one of my friends was going to be late so they waited to bring out their soup so it wouldn't be cold on the table, It would be fresh. The price is very reasonable for the 6 person course menu considering the quality of the meat & the quantity of food you will be getting! Seating was also comfortable & easily accommodated 6 with everyone being able to access the grill. I reserved by phone & we had no issues getting our table!
