The atmosphere combines minimalist aesthetic choices with warm lighting to highlight the bustling activity of the kitchen and the bar. Patrons interact with a selection of regional vintages that complement the salinity and brightness found throughout the oceanic flavor profiles. Every plate serves as a direct representation of traditional preparation methods modernized for a contemporary culinary environment while maintaining respect for deep-rooted heritage.
Ferreira Café is widely regarded as a premier destination in Montreal for authentic Portuguese seafood, consistently praised for its fresh, high-quality ingredients and sophisticated atmosphere. Many patrons highlight signature dishes like the blackened cod, crispy octopus, and various seafood risottos, often noting that the food is beautifully prepared and full of flavor. While the service is frequently described as attentive, professional, and efficient, creating an energetic and upscale dining experience, some guests have expressed concerns regarding inconsistent portion sizes, high pricing, and occasional issues with food temperature or service pacing during busy periods. Despite mixed feedback on extra charges and the noise level in the dining room, the majority of visitors find the restaurant to be an excellent choice for special occasions or business meals, frequently recommending it for its culinary mastery and vibrant, chic setting.
This is one of two restaurants I visited more than once during my weeklong stay in Montreal. Jose Ferreira runs a gorgeous & outstanding dining experience. 👌
The Restaurant manager Caroline was kind & welcoming in-spite of I was not the customer on that day. Love the ambiance of the restaurant. Will recommend this restaurant & will make this as my business dinner spot.
Thank you Caroline!

What an incredible meal we had with my party there. While there was a slight misunderstanding with our waiter, we had the most flavorful & varied food. Each bite made me travel straight back to Portugal, which was exactly what I needed for my birthday!
I couldn't recommend more this spot - & the seafood rice. It comes in a gorgeous Le Creuset Pot & tastes just like Portugal.
A must for Portuguese seafood.
Service atmosphere & food were all amazing. Fresh fish on ice to choose from & the specials were perfection - lobster pasta with cherry tomatoes & a lightly spicy sauce & scallop ceviche with coconut cream were as good if not better than they sound.
We also tried the roasted sardines on cornbread starter & the black cod with porcini & truffle crust - which are 2 of the specialties & they were everything promised.
We wrapped with the triple dessert - tarts, cheesecake & chocolate mousse with lemon ice cream, olive oil & salt.
I cant really say enough about the service, either. Patient & shared context about every dish with a smile & desire to please.
We stumbled on this gem but the guests next to us told us they'd researched it & came because of the reviews.
The hardest part is not going 2 nights in a row before we leave, knowing there are so many other treasures in Montreal.
I had the privilege of attending a private dinner upstairs at this Montréal institution, & it was a wonderful reminder of why it has earned its legendary reputation. Every detail, from the cuisine to the service, was executed flawlessly. This is a restaurant that never misses a beat, consistently delivering an exceptional experience. A true icon that continues to set the standard for fine dining in Montréal.
We absolutely loved it, fantastic!! No surprise its Michelin guide recommended - it was so very good. We had the presunto pata negra & sardine appetizers. Then everyone of our meals were outstanding which we ultimately shared as a family of 4. Our top favorite, the Octopus lagareiro, cod, & rice with seafood. Our kids were over the moon loving it. We've been to Portugal, New England, NJ & have tried many pasties de nata. Get this dessert & get the cheesecake - you will thank us later - amazing!!
I dined solo on a Monday night. It was busy. The vibe was energetic & the service appropriate for this type of restaurant & considering the number of guests. I wasn't impressed by the sardines as I thought I would be. The bouillabaisse was excellent: fresh ingredients, well balanced broth & hot, as I like it. The portion was just right. I would eat it again. Providing fresh bread would match the quality of the dish.
A lot of options in Montreal for the price point (110 for the sardine, bouillabaisse & a glass of wine).
Other than the fact that it got too loud with music on top of a packed house, we loved our meal. We were a group of 7 & everyone loved their appetizers & meal. Consider sharing the appetizers if you are ordering main dishes. Among the dishes at our table, the bouillabaisse, seafood rice, rice with duck, king mushrooms, & octopus. All were beautiful & perfectly prepared & served. The salad with tomatoes was delicious. The tomatoes were very tasty & the mustard based dressing was perfect
