About

Fairmount Bagel Bakery produces iconic Montreal-style bagels through a traditional wood-fired oven process that ensures a distinctively crisp exterior and a dense, chewy interior. Each bagel is hand-rolled and boiled in honey-infused water before being baked on wooden planks to achieve a signature golden hue. The menu centers on these hand-crafted rings, which are available in classic varieties like sesame, poppy seed, and everything. Patrons often pair these fresh creations with high-quality cream cheese, smoked salmon, or capers available for purchase. The bakery functions as an essential purveyor of local culinary heritage, maintaining long-standing techniques that define the regional bagel profile. By focusing strictly on artisanal baking methods, the establishment remains a cornerstone for those seeking authentic, high-quality products that prioritize texture and flavor above all else.

Review Summary

Fairmount Bagel Bakery is widely celebrated as an iconic Montreal institution, famous for its fresh, wood-fired bagels that feature a signature dense, chewy texture and a hint of sweetness. Visitors frequently praise the experience of eating them hot straight out of the oven, noting that the shop offers a variety of flavors and a charming, traditional atmosphere. While many reviewers consider these to be the best bagels in the city and a must-visit destination, others point to the limited payment options, specifically the policy of accepting only cash or Canadian debit, as a potential inconvenience. Experiences with service appear mixed, with some guests encountering friendly and helpful staff while others report feeling rushed or finding the environment less welcoming to tourists. Despite the lack of indoor seating and occasional long queues, most patrons find the quality and unique history of the establishment well worth the stop.

USA TOURISTS BEWARE!
Fairmount Bagel does not take credit cards & takes advantage of American tourists by accepting USD. No matter how enticing & convenient this may sound, DO NOT PAY IN USD!!! They do not exchange it properly - they treat it as CAD & give you CAD back, which is valued significantly LESS than USD. For example, if you give them $20USD you are really giving them $28CAD so they're making $8 off of you. If you give them $50USD you're giving them $70CAD but they're acting as if you only gave them $50CAD & are making an extra $20. I would understand charging a small fee to use USD, but to just ignore the exchange & higher value of USD altogether is crazy. They are stealing your money!!
We unfortunately made this mistake & paid a total of $24.50 USD for 2 bagels (that were not anything special) that should've only cost us $7.50USD. After realizing how much money they made off of us we tried to get our USD back by paying them in CAD & they said our cash was'locked up & inaccessible'.
We saw so many other tourists paying in USD not realizing they were being taken advantage of as well. Please learn from our mistake & either pay in CAD or just steer clear completely. The bagels aren't worth it anyway.

Had to see what all the fuss was about. Quick moving line & pleasant service. Bagels, meh. I prefer NYC bagels over Montreal bagels. Others may disagree.

Edit: bumped up 1 star because of owner's reply, thank you. I actually drove many km to the store. My 2 debit cards were tried by phone & the physical cards. They are from Canadian banks & I have used numerous/hundreds of times in Montreal & all over the world. I suggest discussing with your payment system provider to'avoid confusion' where there should be none.
Beware, very limited payment options. 2 different bank debit cards did not work. Cashier said was because don't accept debit mastercard (it was a bank chequing debit card that also had mastercard logo), so I tried second card - same result. No credit cards accepted either. Very frustrating experience. Cinnamon raisin bagels were okay... but way overpriced.

The everything/all dressed bagel with chive cream cheese is delicious. Coming from NYC, I'd specifically drive to this place just for that bagel.

We hit this joint & the other bagel place in the same day. These bagels are fine. It's a very in/out hurry up vibe. Bagels were okay. They had samples at the counter to try the fun flavors before buying them.

A famous spot in Montreal. Why should you choose between them & St-Viateur, try both. Their bagels are excellent, you do have to try various flavours. I love the multigrain ones. There is often a lineup, but that are fast. You will not wait too long. No place to eat there. Take out only.
