About

Fairmount Bagel Bakery produces iconic Montreal-style bagels through a traditional wood-fired oven process that ensures a distinctively crisp exterior and a dense, chewy interior. Each bagel is hand-rolled and boiled in honey-infused water before being baked on wooden planks to achieve a signature golden hue. The menu centers on these hand-crafted rings, which are available in classic varieties like sesame, poppy seed, and everything. Patrons often pair these fresh creations with high-quality cream cheese, smoked salmon, or capers available for purchase. The bakery functions as an essential purveyor of local culinary heritage, maintaining long-standing techniques that define the regional bagel profile. By focusing strictly on artisanal baking methods, the establishment remains a cornerstone for those seeking authentic, high-quality products that prioritize texture and flavor above all else.

Fairmount Bagel Bakery is widely celebrated as an iconic Montreal destination, cherished for its authentic, wood-fired bagels that offer a signature chewy texture and a subtle, satisfying sweetness. Many visitors describe the experience as a must-try highlight, noting that enjoying a bagel warm and fresh directly from the oven is a truly magical experience. The shop is praised for its historical character and the wide variety of flavors available, ranging from classic sesame to adventurous options like blueberry or pina colada. Fairmount Bagel is an absolute must-visit! As an American visiting Montreal for the first time recently, I was told repeatedly that I had to make a stop here. To be honest, I am not really a bagel person-it has probably been about 15 years since I last had one-so I am certainly not in the best position to compare them to what we have back in the United States. However, this place was genuinely fantastic. I picked up a blueberry bagel & a garlic bagel, & I ate both just as they were without any spread. They were absolutely delicious. The shop itself features a very small indoor space packed with character & plenty of great options to choose from. There is no seating inside, so I simply enjoyed mine standing out front on the sidewalk, which was totally fine & part of the experience. The staff at the counter were wonderful & nice, & the prices were very reasonable. I will definitely be coming back the next time I am in town!

Great little shop with helpful staff. Get the bagel by the piece. Need a sandwich, simple, go across the street to their cafe.

I debate with my Ottawa kids if this is better than Kettleman's. I still think Fairmount is the top Montreal bagel place.

I was so excited to try their bagel bc they seemed very popular in Montreal but I got a rather sad bagel. It was tough to bite & was not warm at all.

I've heard about Montreal bagels for years &, finally visiting Montreal, made sure to stop off at Fairmount Bagel - one of the longstanding original bagel shops in the city. They offer a large variety of types of bagels (some, quite unusual), so you probably want to take a look at the menu before stopping by. Went by on a Wednesday morning about 10:30 & there was virtually no line. (They can get very busy). The bagels were warm, soft & outstanding. We got a couple dozen (they provide plastic bags for each set of 6). It is not a restaurant & there is no dining. They do sell a wide variety of spreads, lox, etc to take out. There is metered street parking, but make sure that you don't park on a block that is for residents only (you'll get an expensive ticket).

Fairmont Bagel: A Classic Montreal Icon Delivered Fresh & Hot
?If you want the quintessential Montreal bagel experience, Fairmont Bagel is an absolute must-visit.
?We were lucky enough to grab a sesame seed bagel straight from the wood-fired oven, & eating it while still warm was pure magic. The exterior had that signature light crisp, while the inside maintained the perfect chewy, dense bite. We paired it with a simple spread of plain cream cheese, & the combination was subtle, fresh, & deeply satisfying.
?Compared to St-Viateur, Fairmont's bagels feel slightly less sweet, allowing the nuttiness of the roasted sesame seeds & the rich flavor of the wood-fired bake to really shine through.
?There's something special about grabbing a hot bagel right off the wooden plank in a bakery that's been honing its craft since 1919. Unpretentious, iconic, & delicious-don't skip this spot when in the Mile End!
