Half the sandwich was fatty. Asked for lean. The French fries were soggy. The waiter brought new hot soggy fries. The latkas were meh.
Used to come here as a kid around 1:00am on St Catherine st for a hot hamburger platter.
The food has just gone down hill.
The fact they were busy just says that people don't know what good smocked meat & fries are.
The waiter was good!View more
This place tops all other smoked meat places on montreal. Everything was fresh & delicious. Tve coleslaw OMG, the best I ever had. Fries were amazing🔥View more
meh
The portion is too big for me. The fries are too oily & the salad / pickle are mediocre. The sandwich is ok but nothing special.View more
Very good smoked meat experience. Roughly comparable to Schwartz's in terms of quality, with a fraction of the crowds. Service was quick & the servers were attentive. The sandwich was spot-on, but the fries were a bit stale.View more
French onion soup wasn't impressive, but the smoked meat was great. The meat platter had a lot of fries & some bread, I would have preferred less fries & more coleslaw.View more
Worlds worst fries ever, kinda burnt & oily. Meat was alright thoView more
Perfect destination for visitors to the city to try Montreal smoked meat. Perfect diner vibes, comforting food that was very tasty & fresh. Service was friendly & down to earth. The fries are unique & scrumptious. Highly recommend their famous strawberry cheesecake, made fresh in-house. It is GIRTHY. One piece is perfect to share. I will be back!View more
I really like a smoke, but when I am in Montréal, I go to Dunn's Famous for my smoke meat fix. Great atmosphere & service. I had the super combo, smoke meat sandwich, fries, & coleslaw. Everything was excellent on my plate. I recommend Dunn's Famous.View more
I wish I could give Dunn's 4.5 stars. Everything was great.
We ordered the Reuben platter & Smoked Meat platter. Top notch flavor, fries were awesome, latkas were a nice touch as optional side.
The smoked meat was very good, moist & melting in the mouth. We rank the Reuben as better than the MSM sandwich but both excellent. Our only minor complaint would be to lightly toast the bread for the smoked meat sandwich. It was soggy & fell apart far too easily with the juiciness of the smoked meat. The rye on the Reuben fared much better.
Atmosphere is classic Montreal deli style. We loved the energy & vibe of the room. Dunn's on the lampposts is a nice touch. Classic rock playing at the right volume. Service was swift & cordial.
Just a very warm experience all around. Will visit again for sure. 4.5/5.View more
We had a great casual lunch at Dunn's. Thoroughly enjoyed our smoked meat Reuben, but ESPECIALLY the coleslaw, which was vinegar based & honestly to die for. The fries were also very tasty & held very minimal oil, which is rare for hand cut. The portion was pretty big & definitely shareable. Our server was attentive & kind. Would definitely return!View more
An iconic Montreal eatery, & deservedly so. Among the best places in the city to get a smoked meat sandwich & other deli fare, as well as a whole lot more. As a former Montrealer who goes on endlessly about how much better the smoked meat is in this city, it's always a pleasure to visit a restaurant that is guaranteed to renew my faith & help me prove my case to someone who's only ever known the stuff they serve elsewhere. Dunn's did this for me last weekend. Twice! We visited on Saturday for lunch, had a great experience, then we went back for more just before midnight. In a city full of great dining options, we felt it was worth two visits in one day. The lunchtime server was fast & attentive, & the nighttime server was slower & a bit elusive, but the difference seemed to come down to experience. They were both friendly, bilingual, & made us feel welcome. It was just as busy at noon as it was at midnight. For lunch, I had the smoked meat sandwich (medium cut). Simple, but phenomenal. Stacked. Tender. Juicy. Flavourful. It practically melts in your mouth. Eating it literally made me close my eyes, savour the moment & smile. Even three days later, my mouth waters at the thought of it. People will always have opinions on which restaurant has the best smoked meat in Montreal. Even while sitting in Dunn's, I overheard some guys having that discussion & bringing up the other big names in the local smoked meat business. My opinion is that when a place is ranked among the best smoked meat joints in the city, you can't go wrong. You're going to get a delicious sandwich. Dunn's is one of the best & they proved it to me. Again. This place is almost exactly the same as it was when I ate here back in the 80s & 90s. No longer open 24/7, but still open until 5 a.m. Aside from the hours of operation & maybe a few additions to the menu, it seems little has changed over the decades. For that, I am glad. The ambiance is cozy. Welcoming. Warm. Smells great. Sounds good. Feels like what a downtown Montreal deli/restaurant should feel like. The kind of place where you're happy to go no matter who you are, what you do, what time of day it is, or what day of the week it is. The place is timeless & for everyone. I saw people of all ages & backgrounds, & heard that charming blend of English & French that is so very Montréal. Everyone appeared content. There were good vibes, even for those wearing Canadiens jerseys & Capitals jerseys in the same booth. For the late night snack, it was an all-dressed pizza. Again, simple & just the basics, but done right! & delicious. It reminded me of why Montreal pizza is better, too, right along with its bagels & poutine. Incidentally, we had poutine, too, & it was a winner. Classic. The gravy was spot on. The curds melted perfectly, the cheese stretched & squeaked, & the tasty fries held it all together just right. If you know, you know. Smoked meat. Check. All Dressed pizza. Check. Poutine. Check. This is where to eat in Montreal when you want to keep it simple but great.View more
Rating: 3.2 The positives it is open around the clock. The service is good, & the wait staff patrols around to make sure you're not missing anything. While the smoked meat platter looks overwhelming, it is realistically comprises of filler like bread & fries. The actual portions of smoked meat are meager. The meat we were served were all leftovers like fat & gristle. Make sure you go before 8pm. The Double D Combo Delux for $27.50+tax is a ripoff. After a night out, not a bad option.View more
The smoked meat is definitely amazing & testy! Not really into the soft French fries, but you may like it. Easy, convenient & great option just around the corner.View more
The ambiance was classic for a taste of Montreal smoke meat sandwich's & poutine. The two of us shared the Super Combo Smoked meat sandwich & replaced our fries with Quebecoise poutine (+$7). It was the perfect amount of food. The coleslaw had a great zing that cut through the richness of the sandwich & poutine. Not super busy with friendly & fast service. Price was very reasonable & not overpriced. A definite must visit.View more
The burger was very tasty but the fries were divine. Best fries I've tasted in a long time.View more
Dunn's Famous poutine was delicious! Can taste their smoked meat, which was very good. The fries were a bit crispy even down to the bottom of the bowl. Curds were mostly melted so no squeaking, but I prefer melted. Chill place with attentive servers.View more
I was in Montreal for work last winter & I found myself pulling a late night & needing a nourishing dinner after 10pm. Upon seeing that Dunn's was still open, I decided to take advantage of the opportunity to try a different smoked meat joint, & I was very much satisfied! I got the smoked meat sandwich combo with fries & coleslaw & it was delicious. Savory, filling, & reasonably priced. While I'd say my favorite smoked meat sandwich in Montreal is still Schwartz's, I would gladly return to Dunn's too.View more
Visited fairly late at night on 8/22. Sat promptly then seemingly forgotten about for 10mins or so. It was pretty busy so I won't get too worked up. Gentleman came to take order, nice guy. I need to preface this next part with, I HATE pickles. Not, "oh darn there's a pickle on that, I'll just take it off", more "oh there's a pickle on that, never eating as it is infected, & I should burn the building down to be safe". I communicate that in a way to every server so they get it. My brother also piled on reminding our server I didn't want a pickle on the coleslaw. So, the coleslaw showed up with a pickle.... so not eating that. Yes I could have tried returning, but I didn't pay enough attention in French class & it's coleslaw right? Why make a big deal when I can do it later online.... Sandwich was... good? I mean it was yummy but not crazy. The poutine... The fries & cheese were fine, but go easy on the thyme or rosemary in the gravy. Edible but not memorable. Oh.. & the reason for 3 stars instead of 4? that meal plus a pop was $43.82 with tip. Not worth it... at all.View more
Great place to dine. Pepperoni pizza was excellent. Large portions on everything. The Poutine needed fine salt on the fries before the gravy is pored on. Service was a little slow, but the young guy who eventually served us was very attentive & very friendly.View more
Fantastic food had the pastrami sandwich & fries. Can't wait to go back!View more
One of the best smoked meat & poutine in Montreal I've tried. My favourite is Combo Smoked Meat Sandwich that you can substitute fries to poutine & 2 people can share. Make sure to order the middle fat smoked meat, super tasty & melts in mouthView more
It's open at 2am, the service is reliable, the smoked meat sandwiches are *chef's kiss* & its not pizza or poutine (although they'll serve you the latter if you want). It's a bit pricey for a sandwich & fries, but then what isn't these days?View more
Poutine was quite underwhelming. Fries were soggy & room temp. Smoked meat was not impressive either. My friend also got the Dunn's famous pasta which was meh but then again why would anyone go to Dunn's for pasta?View more
This place was decent. I enjoyed the interior, adorned with numerous photos depicting the history of Dunn's business-it felt like a journey through time. The service was excellent; the servers were kind & attentive. The food arrived quickly &, while tasty, it wasn't particularly outstanding. A previous review mentioned the bun being dry, which I found to be true, & there wasn't much meat in the sandwich. The sweet potato fries were inconsistent, with some flavorful & others bland. This was my first time in Montreal & at this restaurant. While I would consider returning, there are definitely better options available.View more
The smoked meat sandwich on rye bread was heavenly. It was served with coleslaw which balances the fat of the sandwich. It was the best sandwich I've ever had in my life. But I guess fries are not their forte? They were soggy, oily & takes away the joy one feels while devouring the sandwich. They should gather together & reinvent the way they do the fries.View more
Oh my gosh, what a funky place & AMAZING smoked meat. The cole slaw is very unique yet delicious. The onion soup was filled with onions! Loved that. Even the French fries were great. Service was great.View more
Absolutely a must do for Montréal smoked meat. So good! Also, they will sub put fries for extra pickle or slaw if you want fewer carbs. Thanks Dunn's!View more
We ate here twice during our trip to Montreal in April 2024 & Dunn's is consistently fantastic. REAL French fries & piled high Montreal smoked meat with mouthwatering side of fresh Cole slaw & a giant juicy pickle. Holy moly! What a delight! Our servers were excellent during both visits.View more
Deliciously smoked meats served with a side of cozy ambiance. I recommend adding fries & pickles for a perfect meal.View more
