Hands down best cocktail bar experience, & we've had quite a few! Very chill vibes with just the right level of musical ambience. Maximilian & Hugo were amazing at listening & delivering. I personally love ordering custom cocktails wherever I go. But Cloakroom went above & beyond anything I expected. We felt warmly welcomed since the minute we entered. Every single person in our party was blown away by every single drink we tasted. They were not only delicious but often elicited strong emotional reactions. We're out-of-towners seeking out North America's best bars, but if I lived in Montréal I honestly think I'd be a regular here! I hope the place never changes coz I'm definitely coming back in future. The cocktails here are objectively great & I understand exactly why this place made the'best bar' lists-the no menu shtick, clean minimalist vibe of the space & cocktails, & polished service lend themselves naturally to those kind of upper crust rankings. The bartenders who discuss your preferences in order to select cocktails are efficient, almost to a fault, to the point that I felt a little boxed in. I appreciate the difficulty of the no menu concept & that you have to distill folks' tastes down into convenient boxes, but'spirit forward gin' doesn't inherently mean Negroni or martini, so I was a little surprised by the rigidity of the drink planning conversation. I can't help but compare it to another small but well known'no menu' bar in town, where my drink-planning conversation was much more organic. Yes, that bartender talked about his own personal favorites & ingredients he was experimenting with & thus placed himself into the conversation more, but it felt much more intimate & personal that way & I've got to say that I preferred that experience to Cloakroom's more sanitized one. That being said, I did end up with 2 delicious drinks at Cloakroom (plus the welcome drink-a really nice touch), but there was nothing else particularly memorable about the experience. The drinks are so balanced (again, objectively great), but there's nothing to make you say'wow'-no surprising moment in the drink, no charming garnish, & those small moments are what make a drink truly memorable in my eyes, & that's missing here. Sometimes I think this is a fault of being a part of the elite list of'the best'-is some bit of character (maybe even some playfulness) lost?View more

While my husband & I were vacationing in Montreal, we were fortunate on two occasions to get into the 25 seat speakeasy The Cloakroom. We had read about this place before leaving the states. It sure didn't disappoint on both occasions.
There is no cocktail menu. They ask you about your preferences & create a masterpiece for you.
From our two experiences we can't say enough good things about the atmosphere, cocktails & the staff. Everyone is so friendly, especially if you sit at the bar.

Cloakroom was such a great experience. Each drink is made personally from scratch after chatting with the bartender about what you like, so every cocktail feels like a fun surprise. The drinks were creative & delicious. It's a small place & can be hard to get into, but totally worth it. The bar itself looks amazing & the atmosphere is top-notch. Tucked behind a tailor shop in Montreal's Golden Square Mile, this speakeasy delivers an upscale & intimate experience. The small mirrored room cleverly feels larger than it is, anchored by an impressive backbar & a mix of bar stools & rear tables. The suit tailor-speakeasy concept places this bar in the same league as Dandy Room (Beijing) & Taylor Adam (Singapore). The overall layout even evokes Opium BKK in Bangkok. Music sits at a perfect volume for conversation.

Recommendation: Bartender's Choice
There is no menu; cocktails are crafted based on guest preferences. The bartenders excel at translating flavor requests into perfectly balanced drinks. High-quality glassware & coasters are used, though presentations are minimalistic, often without garnish. A welcome drink is offered upon arrival.
Service: 9/10
Water is served on arrival, & the team is attentive & friendly. Coat service is provided. Prices are slightly above average for Montreal, but the personalized service justifies the cost.View more

Cloakroom Bar remains a top-tier speakeasy in Montreal, offering an intimate & exclusive cocktail experience. The hidden entrance & tiny space add to its charm, making every visit feel special.
The cocktails are still expertly crafted, but the experience feels less personalized than before. Previously, bartenders engaged in a deep conversation to tailor your drink; now, they ask three quick questions & get to work. The quality is still there, but the magic of true customization feels a bit diminished.
Still worth a visit, but longtime fans might notice the difference.View more

This place has got to be one of the best bar experiences I've had. My friend & I went for a drink to catch up & we're looking for speak easy vibes. The atmosphere is perfect, giving a great & intimate ambiance. It is menu-less, so they craft each drink to your preferences. I believe each of our drinks were around $20 which was well worth the quality & detail put into each one.View more

You arrive to this location & wait in line, there are only 25 seats, & it is first come first serve. You are seated facing the bar which alludes to a "show" but it is crampt & the server / bartender decide what to make for you. Small place, probably fits 20-25 people. Drinks are ok, overpriced. The bartenders put on a good show. Don't ask for an espresso martini or lychee martini they have neither. Bar stools have no backing so after a while your back starts to feel it.View more

This place does not serve food but if it did, I'm sure it would get 5 stars. Cloakroom Bar is unique. You sort of feel exclusive being in as there are limited seats. My friend & I went around town looking for a cool bar & were happy we ended up here. The ambiance was warm & a delight. It was tricky to find the entrance which played on the mystery. I'm confused. This was a wholly mediocre experience. We waited in line for maybe 20 minutes - friday night around 7pm. Honestly no big deal. Its really easy to find, yes, it is a non-descript door in a building, but as soon as you walk in you see the awards they got on the side of the door. So not that "speakeasy" esq. They take you down a long hallway which opens up into the 25 seater bar. The way it works is you tell them things you like & they make a drink based off that. That being said - it is all riffs off of classic drinks. They maybe talked to us for 10 seconds. I remember saying, I like mezcal, spirit forward drinks & the guy responds with so you like negronis & I was like yes, & before I could say more he started talking to my wife. Yes, I like negronis, but if you're going to do a no menu bar, you need to do more interesting things than a very normal riff on a classic drink. Also, he proceeded to make me a tequila drink instead of mezcal. The one nice thing they did was a have a "welcome" cocktail in a shooter form, I assume it is a rotating cocktail, but it was nice & cinnamon-y. What I will say is that this "gimmick" of a no menu bar is a lot cooler when the drinks are interesting. All around us, people were getting just simple riffs off classic drinks.View more

I can see why this bar is ranked as one of the best in North America. From the semi-hidden door, to the little touches such as the playing cards used for coat check, it's a truly unique experience. The atmosphere is incredible & the staff are so attentive- & while the drinks are pricey, the customization & flavour makes them worth the price. We came a half hour after they opened & were seated immediately, but the small space was filled the entire time they were there, & the bartender told us how on busy nights there can be 30+ minute waits to get in. Highly recommend going early!View more

The bar is a speak easy located next to a men's clothing store. Very charming & intimate place. Their whole deal is craft cocktails & vintage spirits. I'll always remember this place since it was the first time I tried a glass of pappy. Otherwise, the other cocktails were fantastic & unique (they make the cocktail varriations to suit the customer, so your best bet is to tell them what you like & leave it up to them. Guaranteed theyll do a good job at matching tastes). The place was very small. We got there very early (we were the first customers in the place) & it was nice & quiet. But maybe half an hour later, the place was packed & loud (it was 1700 & there was a lady who very likely subscribes to the adage "its five o'clock somewhere"), making it a little uncomfortable & difficult to have an conversation. Certain things were a little pricey due to the whole vintage spirits angle, but if it wasnt for the pappy, probably wouldnt have been so bad. Overall fantastic experience. Would definitely come again.View more
