Review Summary

Casa Minhota is described in reviews as a beloved traditional Portuguese restaurant in Montreal with authentic flavorful dishes served in generous portions at good value, and a cozy homey atmosphere that evokes Portugal. The service is repeatedly praised as friendly and attentive, helping to create a welcoming dining experience. The menu shines with seafood and classic dishes, from grilled octopus and shrimp entrees to arroz marisco and cod preparations, complemented by comforting croquettes, soups, and a refreshing sangria. The space is noted for beautiful decor and a lively yet comfortable vibe, with many noting consistent quality and warm recommendations for a visit. Some visits are described as off nights, with meals that feel greasy, underseasoned, overcooked, or not as fresh, and a few mentions of slower pacing or variable portions, but these are balanced by many highly positive experiences. Overall, Casa Minhota is viewed as a standout choice for traditional Portuguese cooking in Montreal, valued for authenticity, ambiance, and attentive staff.

My family & I have been going here for years. It's one of the gems of Montreal restaurants. The food is authentic, delicious, & proportionate to the cost. My favourite dishes are the grilled octopus & shrimp entrees, the sea food rice main dish, & the aroz doce (sweet rice) dessert. The service here is unlike others. From the moment you enter, to the second you leave, the waiters are always making sure you well taken care of. The atmosphere makes me feel like I'm back in Portugal; with the beautiful decor & homey feel. All in all, this place is not only a must try, but also a tradition to eat here.

If you are looking for a cosy - almost romantic like atmosphere, warm attentive service (when not overly busy), authentic Portuguese food - This is the right place.

I am going to make this really simple & to the point with regards to their food.
EVERY dish I have eaten over multiple visits has been most enjoyable. Seasoning, portions, texture, doneness - you name it. The only sad part of this place is when you are finished your meal - you actually kinda want to press a magic button to restart the experience & start to eat all over again.
& as with any good Portuguese restaurant, the classic dessert to eat is the Nata... it is simple, delicious & you can not stop at one.

Casa Minhota is amazing! Everything from their delicious food, their authentic atmosphere, the staff is always very kind & accommodating, their prices are very good, their menu has lots of choice, their plating aesthetics is nice, just everything is 10/10. Darcy is fantastic! This is one of my favourite restaurants Favourite things: Bacalhau com Natas, Bacalhau a Bras, Bacalhau a Lagareiro, Sardinhas, Polvo, Bitoque & Porto Pears or Natas do Céu dessert

All the meat was overcooked but OK. Shrimp was great & bread tasty. Lobster...meh. Service was normal if a little ingratiating. Dessert was a small pastry typico, but it had been frozen & microwaved without our knowledge, & when my brother went to bite into it, it scalded his hand. It was excessively hot only on the inside, & although some ice was brought for his injured fingers, we did NOT receive an apology or any adjustment to our bill despite the 3 of us eating. This joint has hung around all these years & is attractive to look at but, no, I don't recommend it at all...there's so much better food in this city if you look.

We were walking past around lunchtime so decided to have a Sunday lunch there.

It was really busy, always a good sign.

Food is really good & good value for money.
Really authentic Portuguese cuisine.

We had amazing mussels for starters & shared a cod & a filet mignon for main courses.

Everything was cooked really well & were very tasty.

Desserts were good too.

We had some house red wine which we also liked.

This was the first place we ate at. It was late & we were looking for something that wasn’t going to have a wait & be in the area. There are a lot of Portuguese restaurants so thought we should try one out, but this one fell short despite decent reviews. The service was fine, but not super attentive & pretty minimalist except for the server at the end who was nice enough to give an extra free dessert to go.

Food wasn’t bad, but wasn’t great either. The mussels tasted fishy & many weren’t opened. The octopus seemed more like a mixed salad with octopus instead of the octopus being the main star of the dish. The seafood plate was basically lobster (which I do appreciate & that was good) with other average seafood around it. They don’t give descriptions so you don’t know what you’re getting on the plate.

The bar area seemed more local & friendly. A decent amount of tables that were close but not too close, atmosphere was fine - not too loud, but felt lively enough. Overall I’d try elsewhere especially with the amount of great food in Montreal.

The food was so good! I ordered the house steak & it was delicious. The ambiance with the music & decorations is very pleasant & the staff was kind & attentive to our needs. Definitely order the natas do céu dessert, it's divine.

Excellent great food & reasonable prices & our waiter was pleasant. He shared how to make the Natas do céu dessert at home. Truly delightful.
Thank you for a warm & lovely night out on a cold March evening.

I cannot rate the food since we did not get a chance to eat. In the past, when I used to go more regularly (6 to 10 times a year), the food was very good, & it had been my favourite restaurant. About a dozen of my Portuguese friends mentioned to me that it has gone down in service & even food quality these past few years. Below was my experience last night when we went to celebrate our wedding anniversary, which the restaurant was aware about.

We had reserved on Thursday for Sunday 7 p.m. specifically to celebrate our first wedding anniversary (we were married on this very day, October 28, last year). Casa Minhota had always been my favourite restaurant, & in the past, I had gone there for every event & celebration, but it had been a few years. However, when my husband asked where I wanted to go, my first answer was Casa Minhota. I made the reservation on Casa Minhota's Web site using their electronic form & I described how it was our wedding anniversary & that I had often gone to Casa Minhota in the past, but had not been for a while. So this was clear in writing. I had also mentioned some food allergies & wondering if there was a dessert I could have. I received an e-mail after a couple of hours on the Thursday (3:24 p.m.), saying that they could do something for me for dessert & confirming my reservation.

We arrived at five to seven on Sunday (we came in from the West Island especially to celebrate our anniversary at this restaurant)... I went in, & my husband went to park. I was completely ignored for five minutes (I kept checking the time), & had to speak up. Yes, the restaurant was busy, but no one was there to greet people as they came in, & every time I tried to catch someone's eyes, the person seemed to notice me but would then look away. So I spoke up & said we had a reservation for 7, & was told we would have to wait 15 minutes for our table because people were still there at the table reserved for us. So we were sat at the large front table by the window. We had sat there for about ten minutes, & another woman sat down... we thought she was also waiting... the waiter came over & we thought our table was ready, but instead he told us that we had to move because the people for that specific table had started arriving?

He wanted to sit us at the bar, but I have muscular dystrophy & cannot manage the higher chairs. The waiter did mention that we would get free drinks, but neither one of us drinks alcohol. So we were sat down at a table near the second door (further back) into one of the main dining rooms, which had piles of empty plates on it (so not set up for eating). We were served water. The waiter came back twice wanting us to order (we did have the menus), but we were still waiting for our table, & there seemed to be no movement from the people sitting there who should have long been out (if the reservation process had been done properly). My husband works for a restaurant & insisted on not ordering until we were actually at our table, since we might end up stuck there eating, or we would be stuck paying for an evening that was beginning to ruin our night out to celebrate our anniversary. I felt like we were in the way... that was certainly how it felt in how we were treated... & yet we had made a reservation. There was no apologies... it was more like we had disturbed "the balance". If we had come off off the street, I would understand, but we had made an actual reservation four days before, specified it was to celebrate our anniversary, & had it confirmed by the restaurant.

What made it worse is there were empty tables... & there were reservation signs at two of the seats at the bar... so why could there not have been a reservation sign on the table for our reservation.
We realized that if we stayed there, we would not have enjoyed ourselves, & it was supposed to be a special night. We were made to feel like we were in the way. So we got up & left (nothing had been ordered at this point).
In the end, we went up the street to Atma, which was also busy, but welcomed us & gave us a nice table. The food was delicious & it was a nice discovery... it is sad, because I was really looking forward to eating at Casa Minhota after not being there for a while... I used to go 6-10 times a year... & perhaps that is no big deal... obviously the way we were treated, Casa Minhota did not need our custom, & did not seem to care that we were celebrating our anniversary. I had told my new husband about how wonderful it was & how much I had enjoyed the food in the past... how disappointing in the end it was... not having our reservation honoured (& not being organized enough to have a table for us at the agreed-upon time for the reservation) & being made to feel that we were in the way.

My husband who is a chef mentioned that because there were a couple of big groups, more than likely one of the groups took our table for two to attach to their table (& the waiter allowed it), & basically "cancelled" our reservation... because who are we really? Just two people wanting to celebrate a wedding anniversary at my former favourite restaurant. Who are we when you will make far more money from a group... so there are only two real reasons... either the restaurant received my reservation (& it was confirmed) & was just very unorganized... or they let our table go to a larger group, because two people don't mean that much versus a larger group.
