Review Summary

Café Central Portugais is widely recognized as a neighborhood gem that captures the authentic spirit of Portugal through its traditional cuisine, including standout items like cod cakes, pastéis de nata, and various pork dishes. Many patrons praise the friendly service and the immersive, old school atmosphere, which often makes visitors feel as though they have been transported abroad. While the outdoor terrace and social vibe are frequently highlighted as major assets, experiences remain somewhat polarized regarding management and value. Some guests have expressed frustration over inconsistent service policies, surprise cash-only requirements, and occasional issues with food quality or pricing, yet others consistently laud the staff for their kindness and recommend the establishment as one of the best spots in Montreal for genuine Portuguese flavors.

I live around the corner from this place & for 3 years, everyday I've walked by. Honestly, I've never been inside but the men always sitting outside, yelling at each other while enjoying a coffee always makes me feel right at home. Café Centrale, never change.

My mother, sister-in-law, & I were in the mood for coffee after having dinner at a nearby restaurant on a Tuesday. We arrived at the café around 9:30 PM. Three Portuguese patrons occupied seats at the bar while Portuguese news played on the televisions. It was well-lit, & the absence of music was a welcome contrast to our loud dinner. We ordered 3 "café com leite", 3 flans, & 1 pastel de nata at the counter—all for just $24. Domingos, who graciously attended to our order at the counter, was warm & made us feel welcome; we spoke to him in Spanish while he responded in Portuguese. He brought our flans to the table & offered to splash them with Cointreau, to which we happily agreed. Once we were done with our desserts, he kindly treated us to a glass of Porto while we talked about Venezuela (our home country) & the Portuguese diaspora who lived there. It was the perfect ending for our weeknight out. Make sure to bring cash, since it's cash only.
