Review Summary

At Café Central Portugais, reviewers describe an authentic Portuguese dining scene with traditional hearty dishes and a warm convivial atmosphere that locals and visitors enjoy, especially on the terrace. The food is praised for authenticity, with sardines and potatoes tasting like they do in Portugal and several dishes including cod earning enthusiastic praise. Service is repeatedly noted as friendly and attentive, and the overall cafe vibe with espresso on the terrace is cherished. Some reviews flag downsides such as overcooked or overly salty fish, a lack of bread with certain dishes, and price concerns with some calling it overpriced. Cash payments are common in the notes, with ATM fees and occasional mentions of the POS not working. Overall Café Central Portugais comes across as a solid lively spot for traditional Portuguese fare and a pleasing outdoor experience, offering warm hospitality and memorable flavors.

I dig this place's atmosphere. I stop by every couple of days for a double espresso & enjoy it on the terrace. Nice view of Duluth in the summer months where there's a bench to relax & sip your coffee. I wish there were more old school cafés like this in the area.

Totally overpriced. $25 for a few pieces of overcooked fish & rice, $5 for a coffee, after tax & tip it was $40 for lunch! Then they tell you it's cash only but there is an ATM... with a $3.50 fee! Every dep in the neighbourhood is $2.00. Despite the fish being overcooked, it was tasty & the service was friendly. But there are so many better options around that I will never be coming back.

Fast, friendly service, & good coffee. Cozy & affordable. Mainly older Porteguese gentlemen are hanging out here, playing dominos, watching soccer, & chatting. It reminds me of our neighborhood tea houses in the old country (Istanbul, Turkey). I also had meals here. Sandwiches were very good, so is the grilled fish! They are operating a charcoal grill so everything becomes x2 tasty. You can talk to the waiters/barmen for fish suggestions.

The moment i stepped in this place something magical happened & I was transported immediately in Portugal. Great smells & very noisy, very casual & full of good vibes. The menu is full of incredible Portuguese dishes & the coffee is delicious. I have tried also the pasteis de nata & I think it was a sweeter & les crunchier version of the original one. One thing you should keep in mind when coming here is that this is a cash only place.

I live around the corner from this place & for 3 years, everyday I've walked by. Honestly, I've never been inside but the men always sitting outside, yelling at each other while enjoying a coffee always makes me feel right at home. Café Centrale, never change.

My mother, sister-in-law, & I were in the mood for coffee after having dinner at a nearby restaurant on a Tuesday. We arrived at the café around 9:30 PM. Three Portuguese patrons occupied seats at the bar while Portuguese news played on the televisions. It was well-lit, & the absence of music was a welcome contrast to our loud dinner. We ordered 3 "café com leite", 3 flans, & 1 pastel de nata at the counter—all for just $24. Domingos, who graciously attended to our order at the counter, was warm & made us feel welcome; we spoke to him in Spanish while he responded in Portuguese. He brought our flans to the table & offered to splash them with Cointreau, to which we happily agreed. Once we were done with our desserts, he kindly treated us to a glass of Porto while we talked about Venezuela (our home country) & the Portuguese diaspora who lived there. It was the perfect ending for our weeknight out. Make sure to bring cash, since it's cash only.
